They are doing much better than most of the people worldwide. Livestock, warm home, chickens, healthy children. I am in America, and this is how we all lived a few generations back, and how lots still live now. That fried bread is a special treat for us. Johnny Cakes, I grew up on them. Never had my own room, but lots of kids do now. Those kids are much healthier than most Americans, and they certainly looked happy.

In Minnesota, 2 or 3 blankets are needed in winter - even when it's above 0 Fahrenheit. In -40 weather, you wouldn't be able to stay outside (with any skin exposed) for more than a few minutes.

Having large families ensures that some may survive to care for their elderly parents. And, being poor, they probably don't have pets. They have working animals.

I'm enjoying seeing her kneading that dough with her hands. I used to watch my mom make breakfast biscuits early in the morning when I was around 3 years old in the 1960s. In fact, she taught me how to count to 24 because her baking sheets held 24 balls of dough for 24 biscuits. There was always a little bit over, so she put in another pan, bringing the total of biscuits to 27 or 28. I couldn't quite count that far up . I love and miss you, mom IMM . I think they live just fine. Growing up black and rural this is very close to my experience. Most of you have no idea of the basics, from growing your own food to making it from scratch, from raising animals for food, milk, and other products, to producing your own energy and heat sources. Nah that dog looks just fine, if he was uncomfortable he wouldn't be plopped down right in the snow. Dogs are intelligent enough to recognize when they're cold or uncomfortable. He would look for somewhere else to lay if he didn't like that spot.

I have a Great Pyrenees and they are bred for extreme cold conditions and left alone up in the mountains for weeks to guard their little herds of goats or sheep. He would be in heaven here. I’m sure these Siberian dogs are the same way.
