I want to pin a comment to share my viewpoint on "dupe" palettes. I always get some comments on these videos asking me how I can support a brand that "rips off" or "copies" another artist's work, so I want to address those specifically. First of all, I can see both sides of the issue, and it's one of those gray areas that isn't illegal (there's no copyright on makeup colors) but can be seen as unethical by some. I would be more inclined to support the artist if they were a smaller, unknown artist who was struggling to be seen and then a bigger company came along and duplicated their work for a cheaper price, basically putting them out of business. I would not support a company that would do something like that. However, Natasha Denona is not a small struggling artist. When you're a very visible business and sold in large chain stores like Sephora, you have to assume that at some point, someone is going to copy what you're doing. It happens in every industry from food to drugs to clothing. Other brands see a big brand's popularity and they want to be a part of that, especially when it's an expensive product with a large markup that can be produced for less. The Retro palette came out over a year ago and at this point, almost everyone who was planning to buy it has likely done so already. It's unlikely that Natasha Denona will lose a significant amount of money because Alter Ego released this palette. For most of my life I couldn't afford high-end makeup. It's only recently that I have a bigger budget and up until a few years ago, I would never have even considered spending $69 on an eyeshadow palette...it just wasn't possible. So I would purchase the less expensive version so that I could have the same colors/vibe without going outside of my budget. I think the same is true for a lot of people who are going to buy the Alter Ego palette...they probably weren't going to buy the ND palette anyway. So that's my take on this issue, and you can feel free to disagree with me, that's fine...I just wanted to share where I'm coming from. In today's economy with so many people struggling to pay for gas, groceries, rent, and other necessities, it's not always possible to buy high-end products and I love that there are alternatives out there that can make us feel like we're getting a luxury product without going broke. 💗

I still disagree. The idea, the concept, the execution and the vision behind this palette, didn’t come from this brand. The brand’s entire existence is based on plagiarism the work of others. This is not a dupe, it’s a near exact copy. A dupe is colourpop creating a similar color story. Copying the exact shades, formulation and tones (the exact one) is not a dupe. Sorry, I truly think this is not a brand I would like to support. Even artists that want to use parts of another artist music (which is called sampling), pay the original artist or his record company for using his work. Why should this be any different?

I have significant issues with the mark up on luxury makeup products and am glad there are options that are reasonably priced. I personally don’t tend to buy dupes and haven’t been impressed with the quality of the few dupes I’ve tried. The bottom line is that dupes aren’t putting luxury brands out of business. They reap enormous profits from their carefully curated high priced products.

I SOOO appreciate your dupe videos. I am on a serious budget and I love makeup so much and this allows me to enjoy a similar experience that I could enjoy with a more expensive palette. The bottom line is that we are all here because we LOVE makeup. For those that can get the ND palette...good for them. I wish I could...but at least I can use this palette and hope for a day when I can afford luxury makeup.

Hey Jen! Such a foxy look! I wonder if the lighter pigmentation of the Alter Ego palette could be overcome by using a midtone shadow stick as a primer under the shadows. Alter Ego did an amazing job in duping the ND Retro. I actually like some of the darker colors in the Alter Ego than the ND they seem more pigmented and easier to blend.

There are a couple of shades in the ND palette that I was interested in but I wasn't prepared to pay $69 for them!!! I'm so impressed by the AE palette, they have managed to produce an excellent "version" at a more realistic price. I love the Alter Ego eyeshadows!! I am so glad to see you compare the two palettes! I have been waiting for them to dupe this one! As for blending eye shadow, I have trouble as well. My eyes are very hooded, and I am 56, so the skin of my eyes are very loose. I find it a bit easier to blend when I do tiny circles instead of windshield wiper motions. Thanks for doing this Jen!!💜

Felicia, I’m only 31 but I have hooded eyes as well - so I can’t do windshield wiper motions because I have too much loose skin there. My eyelids are also a bit crepey (they’ve been like this since I was a teenager), so if I do windshield wiper motions it doesn’t blend anything - it just tugs my skin back and forth 😂. I also do tiny circles, combined with some light taps of the brush to place the pigment down exactly where I want it.

Great video as always Jen! I picked the Alter Ego eye as high-end, because of the shiny topper. The way you line your bottom lash line with shadow is soft and blended not harsh like a pencil. One reason why it's good to run a dark color under your bottom lashes is , because dark pushes things back, so if a person has noticeable bags under their eyelashes this helps make them less noticeable.

I have the dupe of the natasha denona glam palette and I absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE the shades. The pigmentation is fabulous. And the price tag is far more favourable for my pocket. Jen, putting eyeliner and/or mascara on the bottom lashline can also accentuate any dark circles a person might have due to the shadow formed by the lashes or liner! I, like you, read that a bit ago and have gone by it ever sincerely!

I'm actually decluttering my Alter Ego palettes because even though I have them, I would prefer them in the ND formula. I just don't think Alter Ego's formula is my preference, even for the price. My Alter Ego Shadow Kiss shimmer shades have already dried out, and for it to only have lasted a year?! I get it though, it is an affordable alternative, but in the long run I still believe ND formula is the better buy. Or hold out for CColors dupe instead, I thought their Glamorous palette was amazing, thank you for that recommendation Jen. I haven't been able to use any other palette since I got that one. Lol. But then again it's just reaffirming my desire to purchase the ND Glam during the Sephora VIB Sale, it's the ND shimmers/foils that get me, they're just so much better. And I know we're talking about different palettes, the shimmers in the Retro don't seem on par to what I've experienced with ND, with what I saw from your swatches. Guessing the Retro shimmers are just more toned down than the other Midi palettes. Loved the comparison, even though I'm not interested in either because it's not a color story I like. 😅 I'm a Basic-Nuetral gal. Love the break down though and it was a great video. It really made me think.

@@sailor_mew4413 I don’t think that works today. When there are so many brands and formulas out there, yet so many different people with different needs and experiences with makeup. Similarly, I have oily skin, so longevity is a bigger issue for me, than say for someone whose skin is dry. Furthermore, there is no perfect formula that everyone would love 100%, so I don’t expect that to happen with luxury brands. I’m not even going to go into make up preferences such as all matte look, wash of color eyeshadow, neutral lovers and color lovers and so on. I also am an eyeshadow lover and I own many luxury brands, mid range brands, affordable brands and indie brands of eyeshadows. But from all the ones I tried I truly love ND quality. I physically miss using her palettes when I use palettes from other brands. I think her mattes are one of the best that the makeup world has to offer. But that’s my experience with eyeshadows. And I also find that trying out a brand is the only good Indicator of whether you like or dislike their formula, not KZbin videos.

Jen, It’s nice to learn someone else has uneven eyes due to one being more hooded than the other! I’ve spent a lot of time watching your face since I found your channel, and I never would have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out. And this is with me literally watching you apply eyeshadow to your eyelids for 20min intervals, several times a week (ie looking much more intensely at your eyes than anyone would in normal, day to day human interaction). People always tell me that my unevenness is not noticeable and I swore they were all lying to make me feel better. The fact that I spend so much time staring at your eyes and never noticed, makes me think that mayyyyyybe they were telling the truth 😅. I’m still trying to figure out the best shapes/ratios to apply eyeshadow in, and techniques to do so, that look the most flattering on my eye shape, because my eyes are also super deep set and I have major issues with my eyeshadow disappearing when I open my eyes 😂. I’ve tried doing the technique they tell hooded eyes people - to apply with my eyes open, but because they’re deep set that’s all space under my browbone and also not visible lol. Sorry for the ramble, hope you’re having a great week! 💚

I just received the Harmony palette. I couldn’t get most shadows to pick up even digging into them. I wonder if influencers got a different version than the general public.(?). I have the double eye-lid because I’m asian (similar to your eyes, I have a fold)! It’s much bearded to get the color to look even and blended in my crease. People are so picky-not everyone has the same eyes. We’re doing the best we can! I think your makeup looks beautiful.

Thank you for making this video!! I was looking forward to this one 😁 Before knowing which palette was on which side, I liked the Alter Ego side better, which makes me so excited to get this palette! And I’m glad to hear that the cream shadows apply much lighter than they show in the pan, because I was thinking this palette had a lot of dark shades.

@@JenPhelps I don't wear makeup very much probably once or twice a week. So I thought it would be better to purchase shadow kiss instead of glam palette also I watched your video on shadow kiss and you said it blends easier than Natasha denona. I'm really fair and I prefer a less pigmented formula where it is blendable.

Your hair looks very pretty today :) The shipping+taxes to the UK makes Alter Ego much less of a bargain so I'm unlikely to purchase anything, but I love watching your reviews anyway.
