Used to catch some good sized ones- we always called them Mudfish.

We catch those accidentally when bass fishing in Arkansas. I've caught a nine pounder and a fourteen pounder. I only fish artificials for bass and those bowfin will destroy a lure or spinner bait. They just turn it into broken plastic and twisted wire.
