THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
21-SEP-2024. A JetBlue Airways Airbus A220-300 (BCS3), registration N3125J, performing flight JBU561 / B6561 from New York LaGuardia Airport, NY (USA) to Palm Beach International Airport, FL (USA) was climbing out LaGuardia when the pilot requested immediate return and reported strange smell in the aircraft and noise. A couple of minutes later they declared and emergency. Being in approach to LaGuardia the flight crew decided to divert to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, NY (USA) and requested emergency equipment to meet them on the ground. After landing on runway 4 left at JFK the pilots reported high temperature in the aircraft (about 100 degrees) and requested the inspection of the aircraft.

THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreet...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

not a pilot but this frustrates me as well whenever i watch these videos -- i think part of the issue is that there's no standard way to measure fuel across all countries/airlines/aircraft types, so they might ask for weight in pounds but the pilot only has the volume in litres, or whatever. at the very least i feel like atc should specify a unit when they ask for fuel, and pilots should do the same when they answer. doesn't necessarily have to be same unit, conversions are simple enough, as long as everyone knows how they're measuring (ie not just saying '4 + 00' like this pilot did). i saw a video once where the pilot was using kg and atc was using pounds (or something along those lines) and another pilot on the frequency had to do the conversion for them because it was causing so much confusion, which just seems like a very clunky and awkward way to do things in an emergency where things should be simple and streamlined.

every single time, right? the pilots are worried about how much time they have left, the emergency crews on the ground are worried about how big the fireball is going to be.

Allow me to clarify, as a former airline pilot. ATC wants fuel in time because they want to make certain from their perspective that they are not time constrained in getting you down. Emergency services wants to know the weight (mass for you in the rest of the world) to have an idea of how much retardant they should have on hand if a fire erupts after landing.

Why don’t we maximize the benefits our electronic friends can offer and include both hours/pounds of fuel and souls onboard as part of the ADS-B data transmission? The data could be sent directly to the controller and fire station, thereby removing the communications burden from both the controller and the flight crews.

What is the aversion to using the correct terminology of 'pan' or 'mayday', like the rest of the world? Doing so immediately clarifies the urgency of the situation.
@seanfromann8214
@seanfromann8214 Күн бұрын
According to the aeronautical information manual, pan pan signals an urgent condition and mayday signals an aircraft in distress. Mayday also commands radio silence on the frequency. Pan pan may be appropriate however saying the word emergency allows the pilots more leeway to handle the situation. According to 14 cfr 91.123 a pilot may deviate from atc instructions only as necessary to respond to an emergency.
@EstorilEm
@EstorilEm Күн бұрын
Probably because modern ATC was essentially developed in the US, and the VAST majority (like over 1/3 of worldwide flights) occur within the US alone. There are varying degrees of emergency which don’t always require this terminology. If you’ve already been discussing an issue and going through checklists THEN eventually decide you need to return priority, simply saying “declaring an emergency” is fine to me. If you haven’t been talking to ATC and an engine falls off, AND the frequency also has a ton of random traffic on it, then yes, you absolutely break in with a “pan” or “mayday” call. I think it’s mostly about context.

"Mayday" is used to get immediate attention when you are not already in communication. This aircraft was still in communication with departure, so there was no need to get their attention. All that was necessary was to declare their intention to return, and, ultimately, an emergency.

@@EstorilEm The trouble with airplane and passenger stats is that the pandemic messed everything up. In 2019 the last full year pre-pandemic, US airline passengers was 20% of the world total according to worldpopulationreview. Which isn't the vast majority, it's just the largest minority. And it all depends on what is counted as passengers, or flights per country. Ireland is 3rd. on the list with 18% of US passengers in 2019 - which makes zero sense unless the basis of the stats is explained and most sources just don't do that!

I agree nice if ADS-B would report international standard souls on board and fuel. Maybe coordinate with transponder settings for PAN and MAYDAY that when set would broadcast an entire packet of helpful information including hazardous cargo info, etc. Standardizing "minimum fuel" and "emergency fuel" and "out of fuel" would be helpful. Standardizing "WTF state of preparation for final approach are you right now" would help. Let me not miss this opportunity to also request more cameras on board, both internal and external, so pilots can assess whether the gear is down, engines still attached, engine trailing smoke, fluid pouring off wing, tail section still attached, etc. And maybe wingtip taxi clearance cameras as well. Smart cars have better external cameras than commercial aircraft, with fewer lives at risk ( or kilograms on board?). Pilots should not have to stop what doing and walk back to economy class to look out the window at the wing. Flight attendants should not have to wonder whether pilots know what is going on in the cabin and outside the plane or if they should break protocol and ping the cabin.

Weird smell could've easily been a fume event related to the bleed air system a.k.a. aerotoxic syndrome. The telltale sign is the smell of dirty socks. Turbine oil requires organophosphates (a.k.a. pesticides) and once you start venting that into the cabin, bad things happen including potentially confusion and reduced cognition.

Hi, there is clearly a big problem on phonic isolation between controllers at La Guardia. What I still don't understand is, almost everybody knows that a "strange smell" is _very_ often a "dirty socks smell" which is coming from a synthetic lubricant containing tricresyl phosphate that is a _very powerful neurotoxic_ that put a number of pilots and crew members directly in long (and definitive) hillness by killing their neurones by millions, to the point where several of them are depending on a life aid - so why are there still long checklists to make in such a case instead of landing as fast as possible on the closest runway as time is what could miss for the health of all ?
@saxmanb777

Controller- Are you ready to come in now- Pilot- No, Controller- okay let me know when ready, 10 seconds later, controller, are you ready to come in now. Why keep asking and bothering the pilots, when they are trying to run checklists, etc. Just vector them around, until they call back, for crying out loud. Disrupting their flow, only makes things worse, to where they may miss something, over an unnecessary question. Also, it always irks me, when they do not pass along the information to the next controllers, concerning souls and fuel. They need to do that, not ask the pilots every time, they talk to another controller. One more thing to bother the pilots with, instead of getting the plane on the ground safely.
