THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
13-SEP-2024. A JetBlue Airways Airbus A320 (A320), registration N554JB, performing flight JBU948 / B6948 from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport, NV (USA) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, NY (USA) was on final approach to runway 13 left at Kennedy Airport when the air traffic controller instructed the flight crew to go around due to a pavement failure on the runway. When the airplane went around the pilot said: “We’re min fuel”. The airplane positioned for another approach and landed safely on runway 22 left.

HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

For those wondering, declaring “Min Fuel” does not give you priority. It’s just telling ATC that you can’t accept any lengthy delays. ATC is required to tell you if there will be a delay getting back in. If there’s a delay it’s up to the pilots to declare Emergency Fuel or not. Emergency Fuel gives you priority

Vegas is a hot and high airport this time of year. To carry all the payload and avoid a fuel stop, Jetblue probably couldnt carry much above the FAR 45 minute reserve. If JFK didnt require an alternate, it probably would have been planned to land between 5 to 7K pounds of fuel. Likely closer to 5K if heat at LAS was limiting payload. If LAS was hot and high and no alternate was carried, they probably were at or near the 45 minute reserve when they need to go around.

Not sure what time they departed, but we're doing 60s/70s in the morning to 90s/100s during peak heat around this time of year.

Did JBU 948 never tell Approach they were Min Fuel? Car 93 apparently was at 13L at D.

Those runways were all repaved within the last ten years, three of them with concrete, one with asphalt. They are falling apart already?

Weird that 948 didn’t advise the arrival controller that they were min fuel either when coming on frequency or when controller asked if they needed setup time, no?

"Min Fuel" is not an emergency at all. He would say "Mayday Fuel" if it was serious and that would still mean that they have their reserve fuel. They are nowhere near running out of fuel.

And? Nobody said it was an emergency. Nobody said they were near to running out of fuel. Not on the video or in the description. All it said was that they declared min fuel, which is exactly what they did. You sound like you’re trying to correct the content creator about something that only you thought was said.

@@staceygrahame2504 I was mainly responding to other commenters acting like it was some big deal. That being said, given that it wasn't anything unusual beyond some runway contamination did it really need a video release? Seems like it's similar to news networks always pointing out events that involve a Boeing even if it's an engine or airline issue because they are trying to clickbait. I never claimed the maker said it was an emergency, beyond the implicit insinuation due to the video title. Why are you so defensive?

He was letting the car who was holding short of the runway know that JetBlue was on a six mile final to the runway and he can proceed onto runway 13L from taxiway Delta to do the runway inspection. Just giving the car a heads up as to how far the traffic is to expedite the inspection

Wonder if they got a reroute coming out of LAS or if they were given a hold earlier along the arrival that caused them to eat their contingency fuel. One go around should not end in a min fuel declaration. It seems that whoever planned this flight was being a bit stingy with the fuel.

Min fuel usually means the plane has enough fuel for at least 30 mins daytime and 45 mins at night so they are able to still do a couple approaches but with no extra delays or holds. It isn't an emergency but the are minimum as defined by FAR.

​@@jamalh7882Not quite. It means they have just enough to land with 30 minutes to spare if there are no more delays, not that they have 30 minutes of fuel now. If you have 30 minutes of fuel now, that's an emergency.

@@skycop4093 You should not however need to declare min fuel after 1 missed approach. JetBlue has a history of planning little or no contingency fuel. It’s frustrating because when weather hits the NE they are always declaring min fuel. I showed up heading to JFK and we put on 1 hour of contingency fuel due to the poor forecast. 4 Jet Blue flights showed from the Caribbean and all declared min fuel as soon as the were given holding instructions. ATC worked them in ahead of us and when JFK weather went down again we were forced to divert to Philly. Being forced to divert because you did proper fuel planning is not the way the system is supposed to work.

One go around causing min fuel doesn't sound like good planning to me. Not that there was a danger of crashing in this instance. However, many weather hold and/or traffic related incidents would have been serious for this flight.

"Bingo fuel" is a military term that doesn't really apply. This was "minimum fuel", which means if there are any further delays they'll be landing with less than the required reserve of 30 minutes of fuel. That means it isn't an emergency now, but will be if there are any further delays.

Bingo in military parlance means emergency fuel at which point you fly a max range profile.

@@scottw5315 I don't think bingo fuel is an emergency. It is the point where you have to abandon the mission, but you do that before it becomes an emergency.

@@thomasdalton1508 Nope, I don't know about USAF but in the Navy/Marine Corps tactical jet community, joker, is the term for knock off the mission fuel state. Bingo is an emergency fuel state.
