Back in the dark ages of the 1990s, cell service was charged by the minute and the rates were high. You could buy high minute plans, but if you went over your limit the carrier charged you an arm and a leg. Lots of people used pagers as a way to get notified if people needed to talk to them, and made short phone calls to see what was up. That's why Morgan Freeman had both in this movie, it was super common back in the day

That and depending on where you were you could elect to use a landline for cheaper/free.

Also in those dark days the signal for a cell phone wasn't great out side of the city where as with a pager you were more likely to get enough to receive the small amount of data needed vs enough for a conversation on a phone.

Along Came a Spider is another excellent Alex Cross adaptation - the last with Morgan Freeman - that deserves another look. And Cary Elwes is such a fun actor to watch work. He plays heroes and villains equally well. Two made-for-TV movies you need to check out, both are very is to find, that star Elwes are is history-inspired comedy, The Pentagon Wars, and the history-inspired crime drama, The Riverman. The first was done by HBO and the second was done by A&E. In the Riverman, Elwes plays serial killer Ted Bundy. I strongly encourage you guys to check them out. The Pentagon Wars is hilarious, and Elwes shines as a good natured, honest, boy scout-type character, and he chills you to the bone in The Riverman. Research Triangle means two things. 1. It's the official name of a designated industrial park in NC where research and development is done by North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina, and Duke University. It also refers to 2. the region where those three cities are found. I lived for about 7 years in that area.
