Firstly, he was talking about his father, not grandfather. Talk about assumptions. Secondly, could someone verify the proof of funds required to migrate legally because I'm sure it wasn't "one suitcase and £100" for a long time now, even though it was definitely during better times and better governments. It's the inspirational story aspect of it that makes the skin crawl within the context in which he tells it.

why would he? judging by his age i'd assume his dad came here around the time Poland joined the EU and could travel here freely. I guess the inspiration is that he could come here and work hard and be successful. This is a very different situation to those trying to break into the country illegally. I completely disagree with the disgusting barge and Rwanda policy, but I also disagree with people trying to conflate legal and illegal immigration - they are polar opposites; one is encouraged and the other is a crime.

A pity that such passionate and above all stable (you have no idea how much young politics is clogged with unstable individuals who by right should have no business being there), young people go through this phase in their lives. I had my such phase for 4 years in the Labour Party, and came out fully dissolusioned. Politics at this age is a whole lot of soul-searching, self-research, theory, lonely reflective walks and diary keeping. My one recommendation, be you Tory or Labour, is to extract the essential bare bones basic fragments of your ideology, and always return to the foundational texts of political and historical science - Read Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Thucydides, Polybius, Cicero, Xenophon, etc. Read, and connect the dots of your bare beliefs, with examples in ancient literature. It's the greatest pleasure and most productive use of energy. But to do this, one must divorce themselves, to a great degree, from following current events, as knowing too much of what is happening now, is deeply dangerous to an already exhausted mind. The ideal Politician - is fundamentally a Philosopher and a Historian in bone, soul and flesh. The fuckery comes later, but you will at least have an education, albeit a self-styled one, that places you on the very élite of civil society suited for the responsible management of people's lives.
