I really like the Dutch door idea. I'm redoing our coop and run soon and I'm excited to steal that one! Thanks for making this video. Lots of good ideas!

Couple questions: Minnesota based. How did the winter hold up with no insulation ? What was your trick to keeping the water from freezing in the winter? Do you plan on insulating it ?
@CypressSparrowHomestead
@CypressSparrowHomestead 3 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! We don’t have insulation, mostly because chickens can withstand pretty low temperatures, it’s just when the wind picks up it could be dangerous. We always have thick bedding for them because they can trap their body heat with their feathers. We have an electric defroster for water, though it doesn’t always keep it 100% thawed depending on the temp. We have gone to winters without insulating and haven’t lost a bird yet due to cold so I don’t think we will insulate. Great questions!

It was a pretty surreal experience having never been that close to one before. Thanks so far so good with the coop. We are thinking about insulating for the winter but not sure yet!

They are the easiest animal to take care of, and you don’t need a huge coop. Definitely recommend!

How big is your chicken coop? And great ideas thank you for sharing, we are building ours and definitely will be adding some of y’all’s features :)

Chicken coop is 12x8 ft. And the run is approximately 24x6 feet. Thanks! The best thing we did was add the storage space at the front of the coop. Before food and equipment were scattered throughout the property. Nice to have everything in one single spot. Goodluck building your coop!

How do you keep flies out of the food, we have a huge fly problem in the summer??
@CypressSparrowHomestead
@CypressSparrowHomestead Жыл бұрын
Thankfully we haven’t had a problem with flies around the coop yet. With that said, the coop was built in the fall so it hasn’t seen a spring or summer yet so it’s possible that we will have the same problem! Hopefully not 🤞

What an incredible set up!! Do you by any chance close up the feed at night to deter rodents?
@CypressSparrowHomestead

Thank you so much! And we haven’t had any rodent issues luckily, Our cats like to hang around the coop so I think that helps!

How big is the foyer?

That's an expensive coop. I spent $2,500 on a shed that I converted. That had to be 3x that cost. Mine is 6x8, all wood. I'd have to say, yours just has the foyer, that mine doesn't have. You did a great job building it!

Thank you! It wasn't horrible price wise, we were around $2k, half of that was roofing material alone. We were lucky to get almost all the wood second hand or discounted. Without that it definitely would have been much more!

I am currently building my chicken coop/shed. The finished dimensions will be 8'x12' with a sloping roof from 10' down to 8' and a 8x12' chicken run. Final cost will be about $1,200 before I add insulation and solar power.
