They also actually deal with their trauma as well. Instead of being dark followed by dark followed by even darker there is healing, there is hope. There is humanity. We fail and struggle but we also look for solutions. We react and process and move forward. Sometimes in a way that's unhealthy but also sometimes in a way that helps. Young justice is dark in a way most of dc isnt because it remembers that darkness needs light to matter. When it's one hopeless punch after another eventually you stop caring because it's just another bad thing. But when you give time for development and healing it's not just another bad thing. It's watching something being built one tortuously painful brick at a time only for it to be brutally destroyed again.

This show was dark and brutal. But it was dark and brutal with stories and characters. It wasn’t overtly violent for violence sake. It wasn’t brooding without aim. It was poignant, well-paced and often entertaining. One of the reasons I am only whelmed thus far by the Titans series is it seems to be mimicking the dire attempts at shock the DCEU flounders in with consistency. If Titans sticks with its interesting ideas based on tried and true comic storytelling, it could be a great show like Young Justice.

It’s so funny because I was just thinking about this exact topic the other day after rewatching these episodes. I mean we’ve all seen this type of story before the whole “it was all a bad dream” plot line, heck we’ve even seen it before in DC animation (Batman: TAS Over the Edge, and Justice League For The Man Who Has Everything.), but what separates this series from the rest of them is that it shows how such an experience can leave lasting consequences, as it should. I mean witnessing such a nightmare scenario, and worse still being totally convinced that it was real! That shit is freaking traumatic, and to follow up such an intense episode with a freaking Therapy session? That is nuanced television right there. Hell Martian Manhunter hilariously even calls Batman out at the beginning of the episode when he’s all “Why aren’t the kids all better yet? It’s the next episode” “Gee it’s almost like Trauma isn’t easy to get over, I’m sure BATMAN wouldn’t know anything about that!” Lol

I've analyzed Robin (Dick Grayson) from this episode all the way to the end of season 3 and I've come to another realization. Grayson says that he doesn't want to be the Batman anymore, yet his actions as Nightwing are almost exactly like those of the Batman. Think about it, faking Artemis' death at the hands of Aqualad, Aqualad's deep cover mission inside Black Manta's gang, forming a secret team to infiltrate meta-human trafficking rings, working with Batman, Aquaman (Kaldur'ahm), Wonder Woman, Robin and Oracle to outplay the Light at their own game, misleading his fellow heroes in a misguided way of protecting them, as well as sacrificing himself in that training exercise. He exhibits Batman-like qualities without even realizing it, even the way he talks sometimes. All those actions have consequences, good and bad, like breaking the Light in half at the Summit, violating the trust of fellow heroes, crossing lines to do what's right, tearing relationships apart, and I hate to admit it, Wally's death.

My love for YG (and Sage's videos) is very similar to yours. While they weren't the first episodes I watched, these were the episodes that sold me on the show and got me to watch it. When YG first came out, I was in college and didn't have time to watch weekly shows due to my schedule. I saw snippets of episodes, but because I didn't know who any of the characters were except Robin, I didn't understand what was happening. Years later, I stumbled upon some the counseling clips from Disordered and was blown away by the writing and voice acting, especially from Jesse McCartney (whose performance of Robin I actually hadn't liked until I saw that clip; my opinion did a total 180 after that). I knew without a doubt I had to watch this show. Finally sat down to watch it, and boy. Season 2 had its great moments, but Season 1 was even more masterful and has some of my favorite DC animated moments to date. But Failsafe and Disordered will always be my favorite.

A lot of writers of 'kids' content over the years have understood something very important: Today's kids are tomorrow's adults, and they need to be prepared for what they may have to live through. It is important that they have heavy messages delivered to them by 'people' they are willing to listen to, and sometimes that comes from their favorite fictional characters. It abstracts the ideas and goes from being a boring lecture they won't remember to an iconic moment that will hopefully stick with them. Moments like these teach kids that someday it will be helpful to them to open up about what bothers them and to try to understand the problem even if there isn't a solution. Even if they can't identify with the problems the heroes are experiencing, they may understand underlying themes of jealousy, fear, regret, lack of confidence. If these super powered individuals can sit down and talk out their feelings, maybe your average person can too.

One of the coolest things that comes with bringing literal superheroes into therapy, and doing it honestly and respectfully, is that it shows you that getting help or going to therapy isn’t something that makes you weaker, or is an expression of weakness. If anything, it helps every single one of them become even greater. Even now, in the show’s newest episode (very mild spoiler), after years of leading the Justice League, Kaldur finally takes a break to take more sessions with Canary, to explore a decade’s worth of grief and lost friends, and he only feels stronger for it.

Even years after watching this, these episodes have always stuck with me. The first time I watched season 1, it completely shocked me and I remember crying and asking my dad what was going on and if it was real. Needless to say, it was my favorite and not just because of the angst. Character development and having humanistic characters is a must in my book and up until these episodes, you didn't really see these characters as kids, you just saw them from how civilians in their society would have seen them -- untouchable, determined, perfect. At the end of the day, they're kids figuring out who they are and exactly what they want to be. They make mistakes and they learn from it, but those mistakes hadn't seemed so damaging to them until these episodes. My opinion on that is maybe they started to believe that their team was untouchable, that none of them could die and that none of the superheros would vanish. After they forgot it was a test when Artemis "died", the situation seemed real and because of that, even after the fact, they thought it was real. They thought that their friends had died in front of them and they couldn't do anything about it. I totally agree with you with the body language, it's super cool to me. I remember watching Superboy (who is my least favorite in season 1) and just scoffing at him kind of blowing up even though I do the same thing myself. But then when he came back and talked, it was like my eyes opened and I realized what kind of character he is. He's a confused kid who felt like he had to live up to someone that was perfect. And when he explained how he felt bad that he was happy when the JL died, I understood him. I understood because when you're comparing yourself to someone else, whether it was just you or someone compared you, when that person messes up it's like you guys are the same, especially if you put that person on a pedestal yourself. He's still not my favorite since season 2 was eh and kinda made me hate most of the characters, but I do understand and relate a lot to him. Sorry for the whole rant thing, some things may not make sense or be correct, but this is just how I'm looking at it. If you read this far, you're awesome.

Something that sold me in this episode was how open Robin was during his talk, he's been taught by Batman who has hundreds of secrets and probably teaches his sidekicks who to keep secrets, yet in his scene, he was probably the most open and willing to talk. "I don't wanna be THE Batman anymore" is probably one of the best lines in the show

This was the episode that really made Connor more interesting then just superman's angsty clone in my eyes. I love how the episode not only made him question what he wants but why he wants it.

i really enjoyed this show. It was a perfect transition for me, from childish superhero shows to something more mature and dark. I watched it way back when it released and rewatched it so many times. They recently rebooted the show and it is way darker, and although it doesn't give me the same thrill as the original. it is still pretty good and worth a check out

Young Justice is undoubtedly one of the best shows out there, especially due to its exploration of mature themes and the effort put into crafting each character. TOO BAD IT WAS CANCELLED BECAUSE IT DIDN'T SELL ENOUGH TOYS!!! Honestly how stupid is that!
@traughtrobraeyjtt33033 жыл бұрын
I agree that it was a stupid reason to cancel the show however after fighting for years we have gotten a season 3 and they're working on making season 4.

I really like shows like this cause you don't really things like these in a more modern cartoon show, shows like Ben 10, Teen Titans, Avatar, and Young Justice, These shows really put more realism in the story. It's something I wish to see more in more modern shows.

In Batman the Animated Series Dick comes to blows with Batman to become Nightwing, here it is a more personal line. I have always thought that that was a great way to keep Dick in the Bat Family will making him not Batman. He can't be Batman, no one can, but he can't continue to be Robin either. This moment is a great example of "refreshing" or putting a new spin on a known story. It doesn't try to out do previous incarnations of the character, but makes it its own while still respecting the character. Young Justice was an is a treasured take on the DC universe.

Facts. Robin sitting there showing humility, honesty, maturity, wisdom, and great emotional health and intelligence - following the rest of team and their feelings and character expressions - is the best moment in the show. Or at least top 2.

Disordered is one of my favourites man. All their sessions were great but Aqualad's and Robin's hit hard. Even Superboy's was great. Superboy being cold, going to let off steam on an adventure only to come back to express himself is very onbrand. Him saying he was happy with the whole ordeal as he finally felt what it meant to be Superman was a shock at first but added up. After all, he was made to replace Superman and has been jonesing what it meant to be Superman since he was released from his pod (which was his sole purpose). Wade Eiling's words to him "I don't know who you are, son. And right now, I don't care. You wear the S, and you got the job done" meant a lot to him even if he didn't show it. What even makes Robin's session so poignant is how in "Agendas," Batman revealed that he took Dick under his wing to bring his parent's killers to justice so that he wouldn't end up like Bruce showing that Bruce's intentions did work. Aqualad's spot-on analysis of The Team shows why he was the leader in the first place and how he understands his teammates and is best suited to lead. Wally's being in denial was so on brand. And M'gann's reaction to Dinah saying she's white was also a foreshadowing of her being a white martian. Artemis and Wally's session also foreshadowed their epic ship. Peak writing man.

Amazing video. You analyzed the psychology of each character so well!
@PeterPiper2474 жыл бұрын
I still think that it would've been a nice touch if during Robin's session when he says "you cant tell batman", batman is watching through a camera. It does sound pretty messed up that batman would break his trust, but it would show Bruce's reaction to when he finds out what he did to Robin. Kind of like when he watched dick working out, before playing basketball with him.

More great moments from YJ: 1) s2 - aqualad's deep undercover mission and the stakes, nightwing's transformation to batman which was contradictory. 2) Wally's arguement with dick, showing that dick can get under anyone's skin and wally being scared for artemis 3)Wally's sacrifice (and all the spitfire scenes throughout yj) 4) Breaking the light in half 5) wally saving perdita which revealed that saving 1 life was more important than his own 6) s3- batman and his black ops team pulling the strings to counter the light in both media and in reality 7) dick's convo with roy on the truck 8) pretty much everything, can't wait for s4!
