You know something? Despite how awful Chapel's suicide was, I think it would have been kinda funny if his plan *didn't* work. The Devil doesn't want to bring him back. Chapel:I want to live again! Devil: Well you should have thought about that before shooting yourself. Chapel: But.. But, you brought Spawn back! Devil: Yeah, because it's a form of torture for him, he even told you yourself dumbass, you *want* to be brought back. Chapel: Oh... I did not think this through. Devil: By the way, everyone here gets a personal Hell for all eternity, here's yours. *Door opens to reveal a flowery meadow full of dancing, singing animals, sucking Chapel in. Chapel: NOOO!

Y'know, this is incredibly morbid of me, but as an artist when I look at the page of Chapel's suicide I wind up going "This is so horribly drawn". The gun he uses is supposed to be a laser pistol but somehow it doesn't affect the side of his head he actually shot, it removes the skin on the opposite side and it acts like a standard bullet more than anything. I haven't the need or desire to draw a realistic suicide especially like that, but just looking at it I couldn't help but ask so many questions about the logistics of it. I don't think it's as bad as Linkara described it, but it's so horribly drawn and the subject of it all is just so terrible. It'd say it's a final nail in the coffin but at this point they've been using railway spikes and a delivery truck from Home Depot just arrived.

So Chapel is a generic, completely unremarkable one-note character whose only defining trait is being obsessed with killing and a ridiculous outfit. Then because of some vaguely tragic backstory that tastelessly throws in serious subjects just for the sake of shock and convenience, he goes insane and murders a bunch of people for the sole purpose of attracting the attention of a much better known, much better written, and much more interesting established character, all so that he can end up turning himself into an unkillable spoopy demon creature via the exact same method that the first guy used in his origin story, except this time without a trace of significance or weight to it because all he cares about is becoming cool like the other guy is. Chapel is literally just one of those fan-created Creepypasta OCs who fall in love with Jeff the Killer or Slenderman. I mean, the comparison is beat-for-beat exactly the same template. All it would need is for his name to become Chapel the Killer, the agency injecting him with 'experimental mental drugs,' and all the hobos being given names of the girls who made fun of Rob at school. Damn is this stuff creatively bankrupt...

I think Chapel worked in the Spawn cartoon, mainly cause 1. Better writers. And 2. Rather then making Chapel an uncaring antihero, they turned him into a psychopathic mercenary, who actually had ptsd and felt guilty for Killing Al Simmons whom he though of a brother,

The scary thing, is that there is a half-decent idea for a story arc in the Chapel mess, you just to pace it right and build it up and allow him to show emotions. Start with him as a meathead macho-tough guy, and show him being a womanized. Establish a character for him. Once he is established, have him get a cold or something, maybe get shot, and when he goes to the doctor, he gets his diagnosis. Then show him react to it and with how his behaviour has put so many more people in danger and have him grow and change as a result. It could also significant effect his relationship with the rest of the team, giving a competent writer a chance to explore their characters as well. At this point, evil boss dude can force him to do something horrible (maybe betray the team) and reveal the stuff about it being a "controlled virus" used to manipulate Chapel and use that a catalyst for a heel turn. Instead of focusing on how best to use his remaining time of earth, he can become obsessed with revenge and fall back into previous, now unambiguously bad behaviours. The final confrontation with Spawn would make some kind of sense after this, as the character would have been built up to a point were dying to gain enough power for revenge would match character motivations, and previous issues and character development would have dealt with actual serious and important issues that still surround HIV & AIDS. Of course, that would have never happened, as Liefeld isn't a competent writer and would much spend his time drawing muscles and guns.

So... A comic can depict a person committing suicide in gross, gorey and specific detail... But saying "ass" or "fuck" is completely out of the question...? Maybe we need to rethink what should and shouldn't be censored, of course that would mean this whole comic would have to be blurred out but in all honesty that would be an improvement

I've had so many debates with people about comics and censorship over the years I feel like I could write a book on the subject. I still find some of the choices for what to censor and what not to censor to be absolutely bizarre, like you say the decision in this book to censor "ass" and "fuck" but show a graphic depiction of suicide I mean....it'd be laughable if it wasn't so offensive. what's even more crazy is that despite the fact that this book was released all the way back in 94, these backwards ideas about censorship still exist today, even with the major publishers. its less protecting more innocent minds, and more treating the readers like absolute morons. I don't get it.

Honestly my parents taught me swears when I was little so I never really got why comics bother censoring them, or anything that's not marketed towards kids. Even though Linkara didn't go into it well, I agree with him her about the "sexy" way the female characters are drawn. I don't have a problem with gratuitous fanservice, in fact, I buy alot of comics just for that reason, but the way Silence is shown here - completely absurd poses and anatomically impossible spine is just terrible. The fact that she is barely wearing anything, for no other reason than for fan service, is also a turn off. This isn't sexy, it is just gross. I'd say it is an insult to her character, but these Youngblood characters are so generic, she is hardly a character at all. I like fanservie best when I can appreciate the sexiness of the character whilst simultaneously appreciating them as, well, characters. I hope Linkara sees this.

I agree as well I think a good female character is black cat she has really cool and unappreciated design. When artist draw we see a bit of chest area it’s not really focus or shown munch (depending on the artist and writers). And I like her because of her cool design and chance to tell a good story like her origin. I like her not just because of fan service and when I see artists draw her just because of that I kind of get annoyed. Because that’s all they care about is how she looks not that she’s a good character.

While I personally don't feel that drawing graphic, gory suicide in a book is a bad idea in and of itself... this is Youngblood. I highly doubt they could do anything with it remotely tasteful or even interesting in any context. The actual context of the scene does just make it worse.

If the suicide scene is used like Linkara said, "to convey emotion and the horribleness of the act" (paraphrased that a bit) then I can understand why someone would do it, and I could accept that. I would respect them much more if they had some kind of warning in the first page or so, but that's just me, being someone who's spent a lot of time around suicidal people. This really was just a tasteless waste of paper, and I agree, the context does just make it even worse.

Suicide is a bit like rape in stories for me, if you can make it anything else, don't use suicide. But there is a far better and more classy/artful way to show it, implication shots. 3 panels 1 chapels shadow on a wall, 2 the shadow mid act, 3 the shadow no longer there. I'm going to put this out there: This wasn't suicide. Suicide means something far more than this. He wasn't permanently ending his life. Consequences are... kind of the point of what's so bad about Suicide. It's like if Deadpool shot himself. He gets back up. Done. It's still SUPER fucking tasteless and messed up. It shouldn't be in the story. But if there's a way to undo it, and it's something you're intending to do... It's self harm. Still terrible. Still terribly handled. But not suicide. Just because it'd be lethal NORMALLY, doesn't mean it is this time. It's not suicide when Superman blocks a bullet with his body, it's not suicide when Wolverine does it, and it's not suicide here. And maybe if they'd said that, in the comic, in more detail, it wouldn't have been so bad. But people treated it like it was a suicide. The writer probably intended it to be treated as one. And that makes it so much worse.

I feel that, with a proper writer, Spawn's role would've been played up. He'd comment on the value of life, the risks of bargaining with death and the devil, the pain of becoming a demon, the rules and restrictions of being borne from hell, how he'll never be the same and perhaps only yearn for the simplicity that was before. And that, heck, the chance exists his plan triple backfires and that suicide isn't ever an answer. I dunno, Spawn feels like the kinda guy most suited to have an extended argument against it. Too bad nobody with half a braincell was involved. Would've at least given a completely tasteless scene some softening context. Or better yet, he doesn't do it right there, realizing Spawn might try to fuck him over in some way on the deal if Spawn was aware of his plans. It'd make for a good off-panel scene, and with the right setup could help reflect how hopeless some people feel when their best efforts cannot stop someone from taking their own life.

I don't care if they kissed and made up or told everyone they kissed and made up for vocational expedience. Liefeld has a pattern of abusiveness and dickishness. So what if one person says it's all alright. Because he hasn't stopped before and certainly not after. There's something mentally wrong with him.

I know comics have a distant relationship with permanent death but my God. It seems like a bit of a stretch to assume not only that any death can be bounced back from, but that whatever happens after is "negotiable" enough that you can make a plan for it. And keep in mind, this is a guy he killed, telling him he died and went to hell then came back. What if it's a lie precisely for him to do this, and after he does it Spawn is "Hehehe. That's for killing me, sucker." And again, even if Spawn IS being truthful(and is not just confused) this plan hinges on making a deal with the devil, which are notorious exactly for "The House Always Wins". Who's to say he'll be able to do...whatever it is he is planning? Spawn's plan was to come back and be with his wife, and he just clearly explained it didn't end well. What if all he gets is a janitor job at Satan's country club for 3000 years before he's sent to Earth. WOULD THAT WORK OUT WITH WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND, CHAPEL??!?
@BATCHARRO6 жыл бұрын
Heck, Spawn didn't even come back until years after he died. Here his spirit is literally rising as a demon from his body before he makes any deals. To compare the idea, Scorpion, of Mortal Kombat fame, died and came back to avenge is family and clan's death. In that story(or stories) there are at least tenuous explanations and rules for it. It's the classic Ghost who has unfinished business. He diedincold blood. It involves him being kind of a magic Ninja already. Not everyone who dies in Mortal Kombat becomes a spectre, even If they meet some of the criteria. But fron what little I know of Spawn, not everyone who dies in that verse comes back as a Spawn, because that's not the point. Not even everyone who is evil becomes a Spawn. It's a pretty long shot is what I'm saying.

A little past the time to mention this but. The entire impetus for this story comes from Spawn #13, where Al Simmons, the titular Hellspawn, got his revenge on Chapel for killing him. By very literally melting his fucking face off, exactly as painfully as it sounds, and using his magic to keep Chapel, AKA Bruce, alive. Spawn disfigured him in a way that made his war-paint/makeup into an actual skull with removed skin and left it as painful as it could be. Saying his reputation as a ladies' man would go away because.. well. His face is half exposed skull. Anyways here's Rob, drawing it stylistically and like makeup. Instead of, as I said, the actual impetus being Chapel's face getting melted the F off by Spawn. Chapel could not know of Spawn's powers and how he made the deal and anything if his face wasn't literally removed off him. But nope. That's effort. So, his face is fine because it's easier to draw. This is essentially like saying the other Bruce decided to fight crime even if his parents are fine, or the other other Bruce deciding to become a fugitive from the military even if he never got hit by a gamma bomb.

The channel Overly Sarcastic Productions talked about, “Jerk-Sues” in their Anti-Hero episode of Trope Talk. It’s a type of Mary/Gary Sue; an overly cruel and murderous character that the story will treat as a hero regardless of how much they act like a villain, due to the writers belief that their character is so awesome and cool that they can do no wrong. Not sure why this episode made me think of that…

What happened in this book, the sequence with Chapel... I would call that Rob's Moral Event Horizon. The point where Rob crossed the line. That sequence is unforgivable. Treating such heavy and serious subjects so horribly is beyond awful. It proves that this book has no place in ANY comic collection, and that this book deserves only the worst punishment for a comic: to be abandoned. To be treated as nothing more then a footnote in comics, and that the only thing it is remembered for is it's disgusting nature. Moving from that, I will say one thing about Youngblood in general: the character and idea of Psilence could work in a different book and with a different writer. Yes, her body proportions and outfit are bizarre, but with a better writer and story, she could be a cool character.

All of this lead to an event called EXTREME SACRIFICE, that I've just read recently. For all you wondering (and a bunch of spoilers): . . . . . . . . - Chapel goes to Hell to become a Spawn, but a demon says he cannot do that because he is destined to become an even more powerful beign, to lead the Four Horsemen and sit upon the Throne of Hell forever. - Meanwhile, a guy called Crypt comes over and pledge alliance to the now Demon Lord Chapel. - Bloodstrike fights the greatest hero ever, Prophet, and discovers his true identity (Cabbot Stone). - In New Men comics, the New Men's speedester Dash gets pregnant (from her team mate Reign) and gives birth to a boy in a matter of weeks. In a matter of hours, the boy becomes an adult. This is the Newborn, the man who is prophetizied will defeat Chapel. - Colonel Bravo (Shaft's dad) and his team, the Order of the Knight (which includes Link, Glory, Warwolf and Youngblood members Troll and Knight Sabre), start The Gathering, a reunion of superheroes. - Trying to stop The Gathering, Crypt hunts down and butches a lot of superheroes, aparently killing Supreme and murdering including all Brigade's members but Seahawk (Battlestone was suposed to be dead... again). - The Order of the Knight, the New Men, Bloodstrike, Seahawk and both Youngblood teams all meet at Youngblood's HQ to make a final stand against Crypt. They all get massacred. - Prophet comes to save the day - Crypt kills Kirby - Prophet battles Crypt and discovers that Crypt is an evil version of himself. Prophet decapitates Crypt - After Crypt's defeat, Chapel comes in. - Youngblood's manager, Graves, reveals that he is LUCIFER HIMSELF and battles Chapel. - Lucifer and the Newborn join forces to defeat Chapel. - End.

Funny thing is that I just read the new Youngblood series called "Youngblood: Reborn" and I have to be honest... I actually kind of like it, even if I do feel like I would have to read the previous albums to follow what little story that occurred before. Basically it takes place some time after the original team got disbanded due a lot of events that happened in Alan Moore's mini series Youngblood: Judgment Day where they dealt with one of their own being tried for murder. Needless to say, the new run dealt with how superheroes can be called by civilians using basically a Uber app called "Help!" where they introduced , the cyborg superhero Diehard is now the president of The United States (yes seriously), Badrock is suffering from a illness due to his rocklike state and so on. The story kicks in when a young sizechanging superhero called Man-Up disappears with all info on the app and elsewhere is as if he never existed. So his friends who are also supers decides to investigate it. So the way I see it, this is the better version of it and you should give it a shot :)

Everything about Chapel's suicide is absolutely disgusting and makes me question, as usual, how Rob still gets work, but I think one thing you didn't mention is, y'know, kinda the message of his suicide. it's kind of like a Hannah Baker type of message, where it's basically saying If you kill yourself, you get to live out your revenge fantasy!". That isn't what happens, pretty obviously. You can ask if Spawn portrayed this as well, but it didn't really, considering that Spawn didn't shoot himself in the head or anything. Not only that, but Chapel has been mostly portrayed as a good guy for the run of the comic, making it seem like a better thing to do than if, say, a villain did it. Now, Chapel's plan *doesn't* actually work, but I don't think that gets portrayed in the comic where he commits suicide.

Everyone who's had a good comic published please await your turn. Femkara! She is no man - STAB! Rocking purdy hat. Femkara! She's got a magic gun where she purchased that? Femkara! Toys, robots, Greek boy bands and boats. Femkara! This comic Rocks! Femkara sits down nontheless and takes time to sift through it. Well written, drawn, exquisite taste - that's why she wants to do it. And right about time we exclaim! They made Watchmen even with Pirate maim. And she'll have you know that it's quite a show On par with the manners of the 90's Dame. Illuminating crossovers, one-shots and tie-ins Femkara clears up all reality defiance Below the Fourth Wall showing path to us all "Of course! Don't you know anything about science?" There would be awful books on this show but Quesada sold'em to Mephisto So now there's plenty left to do, like share barrels of fun with every single one of you. Femkara! She is no man - STAB! What's that on her arm? Femkara! Now seems to have a continuity alarm. Femkara! Rock 'n' roll, Insano, some feller in a tux? Femkara! This comic Rocks! Femkara! " AU anyone?

Letrune Inedil I still haven't seen that review, only heard about it. Besides his theme song doesn't mention it.

THANK YOU! I can' t tell you how happy I am to find an entertainer who deals with potential reactions to delicate issues with sensitivity. Hoping this becomes a trend and trigger warning jokes die out in 2018.

Do you think at some point this year we get the return of the "Combine Harvester" freakout?

That last shot of Psilence looks pretty good, actually. Granted, Linkara showed just the head shot (don't know if it's that way in the comic itself) so no spine bending or exaggerated proportions, and despite the typical Youngblood disease, her eyes look decent. Let's take what we can get, I guess? Also, still waiting for the next issue of Image United.
