Oh! Yes. About capes. There are ways of preventing one from injuring you or hindering you in a fight. One way is having superstrength so you can simply tear it if you really need to. Another way is training with your cape so you know how to move around without it getting caught on things. You can also make it easily detachable in case it ever does while having several spares on hand. They're useful too. Batman, for example, uses his to hide his hands so his enemies don't know if he's going to punch or throw something, drape his whole body with it to appear more imposing (to go with his terror motif), glide and slow his fall, confuse his opponents, and bundle up in it on cold New York nights. You'd expect Edna Mode, super costume designer extraordinaire, to think of that, but seeing as she puts high heels on adolescent superheroines, maybe her reputation is exaggerated. Personally, I think the real reason is that capes were too difficult for Pixar to animate at the time. After all, it did take them till 2003 to figure out blinking.

Well according to the incredibles timeline, it was the sixties and fifties.also they followed watchmen cynic logic. Honestly i hope the sequel has a hero or villain that has a weaponized cool cape to make edna look like an idiot.
@LupineShadowOmega6 жыл бұрын
A fun thing is that in the Forgotten Realms books, that was something that Drizzt Do'Urden also takes advantage of and often other rangers as well. A cloak or cape tends to break up a silhouette and make camo in the woods or shadows easier, makes it harder for ranged projectiles to know where center mass is, and can be used to trap spears and even swords depending on how thick the cloth is.

I dig that idea! several villains in DC give of a similiar vibe (hello condiment king). It would make a kind of funny sense that some of them would try to be low-key supervillains, kinda like how people in "the hood" feel the need to have a flamboyant MC persona to link them to Hip hop culture.

Actually Linkara, Dick Grayson going back to Robin apparently came close to happening. Since he was almost exclusively in the Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans by 1983, I think the Batman books were suffering because they didn’t have the Batman and Robin dynamic. The Batman editors apparently (this is just me remembering from another video) were going to de-age Dick to an age YOUNGER than he was when Batman originally recruited him, so he’d go back to just being Batman’s sidekick. And the only reason he didn’t was because Wolfman and Perez compromised with making him Nightwing, freeing the Robin mantle up for Jason Todd.

The whole idea behind Thunderstrike was to have a powerful superhero who really was just an ordinary working Joe at heart. Later on they even starting putting the tagline "The Everyman Avenger" on the covers, which probably didn't inspire as much excitement as they hoped. Of course you probably wouldn't really call a Manhattan architect an "everyman' either. Not exactly blue collar work, that. He's kind of like Spider-Man without the mental issues and permanent childhood in that Eric's personal life was as important to the story as punching bad guys.. In any case, the series definitely improved over time and the 1st issue is probably the worst one. It probably wouldn't have lasted nearly as long as it did if Marvel's EiC Ton DeFalco wasn't the one writing it, but hey. At least the series got a proper ending thanks to that.

Looking back on it, I think Thor is a Nightwing situation, technically. Thor started off as Donald Blake, and while plenty of stories would retcon his origin, he was still Donald Blake, physician for nearly 20 years (1966-1982 or so). The only times he was ever really just 'Thor' was from 1982 to the 90s, and sometime in the 2000s onward.

I have to say, the idea of a hero with architectural knowledge/an architect who has experience in hero circles opens up some possibilities. Like helping rebuild after the latest alien invasion by designing and then realizing new buildings, or you could have him be the one who designs some of the residences of superhero teams, have him know how best to save or bring down a building...

I’m not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, carjackings were, quite, “higher on average during the first five years of the 1993-2002 period”. The presence of Thunderstrike and Bloodaxe was probably the factor that led to Carjack and his goons getting off. With those two present, it could be argued by a lawyer that the police didn't have the ability to say whether the evidence found on the scene was genuine, or whether either of the two costumed guys might have planted it. That's one of the problems with vigilantes: they contaminate crime scenes. If the lawyers were good at their jobs, they would have pounced on this uncertainty immediately, in order to get their clients released.

I'll be honest, as I listen to this...I can't help but grin at these kinds of things the comic brings up, but doesn't follow through with. The superhero insurance stuff, the suit discussion and the fact that a superhero clothes shop exists on the streets, villains with crazy getups trying to be smart and anonymous only for it to blow up in their faces...all mixed with the fact that Thunderstrike is kinda like Ben Reily, and I really like Ben Reily as a concept. This just makes me think of some Marvel universe side-scrolling beat-em-up where you go left to right beating up street thugs and try to take out people in your hometown, but you can also retreat to superhero clothes shops to get new gear that dramatically changes how you fight. And every time you fight one boss, he has a different mask that gives him different powers and skills. That'd be AWESOME. Shame this comic only touched on these ideas. Creators, get on this!

The insurance question is VERY stupid question at the time. In 91-95, Damage Control was still active in the Marvel Universe and all Avengers and reservists- which Thunderstrike was- were covered. Thor (during Eric's tenure) dealt with them multiple times. Odin must have written "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy and have a short memory so short it makes Dori the Fish seem like an Archivist, shall possess the power of Thor" on Eric's hammer.
@HiperPivociarz6 жыл бұрын
I like how humble Eric is. It kinda makes me sad, considering now Thor Odinson claims he's not worthy of his name as well... Which is admittedly kinda stupid, it's not like he got the name after lifting the hammer, it was given to him by his parents I assume. Replace the name "Thor" with "Steve" Jane Foster: All-New All-Different Steve "I'm not worthy of being called 'Steve'" said Steve the Unworthy to Jane Foster Steve

Fun fact: double-bladed axes are never used in combat-the other blade makes it so heavy it's hard to recover, and you never need that other blade-it's not like a sword, where you can thrust with the point. Some axes, dating back to the Persian sagaris, actually had spikes sticking out the back of the blade, but that's there to give you an option to use the other end if you want to stab someone with that spike (say, if they're wearing armor).

Oh god! I like that show, but the narrator is so cheezy. It's like something out of 50's superhero serials

Dalton Williams Well when the voice of Yoda in that show decides he’s had enough of the awkward dialect, I too would expect him to let loose a little in the openings.

Dalton Williams You're actually kinda close there. It's supposed to be reminiscent of war news reels shown before movies in the 40s.

Speaking as someone who was around when this came out, and was working in comics, I think the real problem with the early 90s was, in order to support as many new companies and new comics, the big two had to drop standards that were already somewhat questionable in regards to the quality of their artist, especially after 4 really good artists and Rob Liefeld left to start image.
@Raximus30006 жыл бұрын
Linkara doesn't read "boku no hero academia" there they explain what capes are for. They serve so that "they can take tormented little girls in their pain and suffering and cloack them in its comfort."(Mirio Togata) p.s. No western comic would dare to say that, even though it is cool and awesome!

Lol gotta give the creators credit on creating a stereotypical 90's ultrabuff manly character and then making it a woman. Kudos.

The big problem I have for making certain characters simply a mantle for other people to take over is some of them aren't just a mantle. Thor is the big one. Thor isn't a superhero secret identity for people to just take over, he's a character. Unlike Superman who's really Clark Kent, Thor is his actual name. Ignoring when he changed into Donald Blake which was revealed as simply a change of memory by Odin, Thor is his own person. No secret identity. So simply making another person "Thor" like they did with Thunderstrike or present day with Jane Foster is really head scratching for me. Especially today when Thor isn't dead or missing, he just can't use the hammer anymore. But Thor isn't the hammer, Thor is Thor.
@GeneralKenobi756 жыл бұрын
Well one, Mar-vell isn't as big a character as Thor. Two, Captain Marvel actually sounds like a superhero identity. Thor isn't.
@L17016 жыл бұрын
The problem with this complaint is that both Eric Masterson and Beta Ray Bill have gone by "Thor", and that's fine, but it's suddenly a problem if Jane Foster does?
@GeneralKenobi756 жыл бұрын
No, I have the problem with both them and Jane Foster. There is only one Thor. That's his name, not some title. His title is the God of Thunder, of which there are many. Thor is a personality, a character.
@GeneralKenobi756 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but Storm already has her own life and character. Why do we need her to take over for anyone? At least Jane actually has a connection to Thor.

I'm kind of surprised Dick Grayson never became Robin too. I heard the reason Barbara Gordon became Batgirl again in the nu52 was because she's the most iconic. I think this is also why she replaced Stephanie Brown in the Smallville comics (That and Dan Didio refused to let writers used Stephanie until Batman Eternal). But Dick is the most iconic Robin but he didn't revert back when the nu52 happened.

what gets me is that linkara has been reviewing comics for 12+ years and yet still hasnt gotten the same mainstream attention like comics explained and comicstorian. no diserespect to those guys at all, but linkara actually has a comicbook storyline in his videos and does a phenomenal job of not just explaining whats going on but giving his own personal opinion of the comic. I guess thats the difference between reviewing the comic and just reading the trade to us.

One of my favorite stories from Astro City involves a writer at a small comic book company and some of the issues they deal with in a world where superheroes exist. Including having the superheroes show up at their office to complain, a supervillian attacking the editor because they made it look like he was a racist and at the end of the comic cosmic powers destroying the building she worked at.
@ianr.navahuber21956 жыл бұрын
i really need to read astro city. i know is written by one of the comic book olympians and best writers kurt busiek (from the kin of grant morrison, scott synder, geoff johns, alan moore, stan lee, jack kirby, gail simone and whoever is currently written black panther, i heard he is really good)

Ta-Nehisi Coates. And his run is very enjoyable.
@gizmofrompizmo21776 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend them. They sometimes took a bit of a different take on superheroes than you ussually see. One story dealt with ageing superheroes. Another called The Dark Ages dealt with superheroes becoming a lot darker in the 70's. One of my favourites was a collection of short stories of regular people dealing with superheroes which was really good.
@ianr.navahuber21956 жыл бұрын
thats another story that convinced me too read astro city. it even won an eisner, and is contnung in the issue 50. Also. the covers are always done by ALEX MOTHERFUCKING MASTER ROSS (I really like alex ross' artwork, even though his batman looks sometimes weird. and only bats)

"a supervillain attacking the editor because they made him look like a racist" And just like that I have this wonderful mental image of Doctor Doom lounging on his throne reading a comic book before lurching forward in shock and saying "What's this?!". Dynamically, he launches to his feet and, holding his comic book aloft, proclaims "I am DOOM! I EQUALLY HATE EVERYONE WHO ARE NOT NAMED REED RICHARDS! I SHALL TEACH THESE PUNY WRITERS TO FEAR THE WRATH OF *DOOM!"*

Personally I like Thunderstrike. I do agree with a lot of what Linkara said. The first Issue wasn't a masterpiece but I think the series did improve and I liked the fact that Eric was always struggling to balance his personal life with the responsibility of being a hero. And Thunderstrike died and has for the most part remained dead. Though I did like Thunderstrike as he appeared in the MC2 series, A-Next.
