I have similar sleep problems due to anxiety and it feels like my brain is sabotaging me every time I go to sleep. I also have started to take melatonin recently and it has really helped! Another thing I do to calm down and to stop my brain from hating me is a word game that goes like this: You think of a five letter word, like young, then you take each letter, and come up with five words that start with that letter. Young: Y, yeast, yesterday etc. then you go and do that with each letter, once you finish you start again with another word. This eventually makes me feel tired and my brain kinda just shuts down and I'm able to sleep, I encourage everyone to try it!

Genuine advice from someone who has struggled to sleep their entire life. I finally talked to my doctor about it and let them know how much it was affecting my life, and how I was already doing the usual things like healthy diet, exercise, and a stable routine. They gave me prescription strength melatonin. First two weeks, knocked me out in about 30 mins, it was great. Many months down the line, not as effective anymore, it usually takes two to three hours to fall asleep, but that's compared to five to six hours so still a benefit. And the main thing is, according to my doctor's, seek your own doctors opinion but, melatonin does not bio accumulate nor does long term expose cause your body to develop a dependancy. But I've only been using it for about a year. Hope that helps someone. I'm going to look into cherry juice, haven't heard that one before.

I have a few recommendations: if you can't fall asleep because you aren't sleepy 1) turn off the lights at least 1 hour before you attempt to sleep 2) set a blue light filter on your phone for the night (blue light stops the production of melatonin in the brain which is a needed hormone to induce sleep) 3) don't eat 30 mins before bed 4) right before bed do something relaxing or repetitive to get your heart rate down and start the process of letting your mind drift if you can't fall asleep because of overthinking 1) do something relaxing you enjoy before going to bed (if you do something anxiety-inducing right before you try to sleep of course it's going to follow you into bed) 2) try a sleep meditation (it will help guide your brain's thinking into that peaceful sleep state instead of those intrusive thoughts) here is a link to my favorite sleep meditation channel he has a BUNCH of sleep meditations to chose from kzbin.info

Okay, here's a tip that helped me stop my mind from racing and actually fall asleep. You have to give yourself the space and time to actually think your thoughts. If you're like me, you have a billion school assignments or are constantly working on projects, or are filling all of your free time watching youtube or netflix. This makes it so you're never actually fully present with your thoughts until bedtime. Instead, you should set aside some time (I do it before bed) to process the events of the day, your feelings, and your plans for the future. For me, this is journaling, but for other people this could take the form of mindfulness meditation, noticing your thoughts and letting them occur as they do naturally and simply observing them. Incorporating this practice into a nighttime routine has been really helpful for me.

I never caught myself in the moment I fell asleep. It always just happens. It usually starts by me thinking about something, usually from the day, then some imaginative scenarios comes naturally and then I fall asleep, idk how long this process lasts, sometimes it feels like at least half an hour. Also this requires perfect physical conditions, like me not being to warm, good body position and at least some level of tiredness

I find I think too much, that's why I can't sleep. So I listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or long videos that don't require you to watch, and I just... Listen. Somehow I can cut off my critical thinking while still pay attention, and fall asleep in about 30 minutes. Only part that sucks is finding where I fell asleep so that I can pick back up where I left off. Also I've sort of trained my brain that I'll definitely pick it back up the next day, so if what I'm listening to gets exciting, it won't keep me awake
@BackseatAlpacas3 жыл бұрын
The whole “too sleepy to sleep” is accurate. It’s the worst feeling. I notice that when I come home from my 9 to 5 office job, I can fall asleep within a few minutes and then wake up after 2 or 3 hours. But when it comes to sleeping at night, it’s harder. I could write a whole novel about this. Things that have helped me in the past are journaling before bed time. I get a lot of my thoughts out of my brain there. It took a long time for that to become a habit. I had to train myself to be able to write something down and then allow myself to forget it BECAUSE I had written it down. Sometimes routines help but sometimes they make me feel bored and then my mind wanders because it doesn’t feel satisfied. So occasionally, I have to sleep somewhere different in my apartment. This might be sleeping on the couch, sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag or even flip flopping to sleep with my head on the foot of my bed. Then this might only apply to people who are menstruating, but there are times where the cause of my inability to sleep are from changes in hormones about a week before my period. It’s difficult to control these. Even birth control which is supposed to regulate your hormone levels sometimes doesn’t work. In those cases, I often rely on sleeping pills which work most of the time. The other times, I just have to accept that I’m not going to sleep and I just get out of bed and do something else.
@aword4world3 жыл бұрын
You know when somebody says to you: ‘Do not fall asleep at all costs, this is super important,’ your brain is like ‘go to sleep, you’re sleepy, go to sleep...’ Just do that. I can confirm that having a routine is the best way to sleep every night. The past few months I moved back with my parents due to quarantine. I'm sleeping in the living room and the sun lights the lights the place making me wake up at around the same hour regardless of shat time I slept. The cloudy days I wake up a little later, but never too late because my parents, who have their own routine, will come to the living room making enough noise to wake me up in the process. That may sound annoying, but it really isn't because you are used to wake up in that hour. So every day I wake up at around 9:30-10 am and sleep at 1-2 am. It's not super early, but I don't need to wake up earlier and I wake up naturally, unlike when I was living on my own and was delaying my alarm clock every 10 minutes to eventually wake up at 2 pm resulting to me not only missing my classes, but half of the day.

I keep thinking about random stuff like "what if I drowned during a kayak trip in the future." "What sexuality am I..?" "Why do I like these characters so much-" "why after getting out of a fandom I'm dragged in a month later." "Why is it that people ship things, and why are most of them gay?" "Why do I actually like that-" "what if the ships were canon" THESE KEEP ME UP AT NIGHT

A lot of people try to avoid thinking about things before going to bed. If you are one of those people, don't think about avoiding thoughts, but choose something you will think about. I get a single wordless song in my head and let it play on loop until I fall asleep. Also, laying down for hours with your eyes closed will not replace sleep but it's better than nothing. if that's the best you can do then just do that.

Something that I found helpful is just having my brain follow a line of random thoughts like it starts with some thing like an apple that I ate then I think about the grocery store I got it from then I think about the farmer I got it from etc. or I just think about darkness not letting my mind stray only the eyelid void and concentrating on that puts my brain into think mode which leads to sleep mode

Don't worry my man, one time I also had that time where my body was extremely tired that I couldn't sleep. I was a zombie, 6am to 10pm, yet I couldn't sleep, and I said to myself, "What is going on? Has God abandoned me?"

Past 10:30 p.m. my brain either decides that sleep is for the weak and I will be staying awake all night, or that I'm about to hibernate for the next 5 years, and I just go with it.

Just don't lie there and try to sleep without any progress. Get up and do something that will tire your mind (watch youtube or something) then after a resonable time go to bed. PS: While doing that something that will tire your mind try not to move so your body doesn't wake up and your mind gets a sensation of sleeping
@missinchoate2 жыл бұрын
1) i would drink chamomile tea to get cozy for sleep. Also i noticed if i have a workout during the day that i tire more at night 2) i listened to a podcast recently where they actually said according to age ranges, sleep time is varied. Younger people required like 9-10 hours sleep when the elderly only needs like 6-7

For the great ideas while trying to fall asleep, keep a small notebook on your bedside table or somewhere you can reach it, write it down, then you can fall asleep without worrying about forgetting it. The best thing I've ever learned about sleep, is that lying there with your eyes closed trying to sleep, can be just as beneficial as actual sleep. It helps me chill out about not being able to actually fall asleep.

Pro tip, don't use melatonin for long periods of time everyday, your body will think it is producing to much of it and will keep you awake. Using it occasionally or for no longer than a week or 2 is best otherwise body will fight it. Its my life long struggle what your talking about I have to use prescriptions but even that doesnt help 😵

I've always struggled with sleep, but funnily enough once I'm asleep its basically impossible to wake me up without shaking me awake. Multiple times I have slept through thunderstorms, my dog barking at said thunderstorms and my parents yelling at my dog to shut up. Twice I've even slept through my mum screaming in rage from a frustrating dream (yes its happened more than once)

The parts of falling asleep 1-(getting ready)???- every time you think you- I need to get ready for tomorrow because tomorrow it will be a big day 2-(trying to fall asleep in a good poze)???-man I think sleeping on this side will give you nightmares you-true (spending half an hour to find a good poze) 3-(you don't feel like sleeping) you start staring at random places like the roof walls or the empty void in your eyes After somewhere 15mintues you will fell asleep 4- Dreem?-you fall into a nother dimension you start exploring after exploring a lot you decide to open a random door 5- (everything todaly not crazy happens)now if the brain still didn't start to annoy you that's bad because now enything bad or good can happen at eney Sekond make sure you are allown or there is someone make sure they are on your side 6- (problems start) If you are still in your dreem then now something bad has to happen try to make sure you are allown or with someone that's on your side try to somehow escape your dreem Tips- if you can't escape don't worry soon you will get telported back to realty anyway you will not stay in your for to long.If you still can't escape but you trying to find the exit for a very long time then you can get out by using the bad ending what's a bad ending you will say it's actually very easy just oof your self
