As a digital nomad, my books live in my suitcase, and I'm increasingly tempted to post a photo of it as a shelf proxy to see what roast I can squeeze out.
@DarkHarlequin Жыл бұрын
I know month old post but question to you: I'm not a digital nomad but I like traveling and I dislike having stuff just lying around my house that doesn't get used so most of my books are... on my phone & reading tablet. I see the appeal of a book collection but when I travel for 2-3 months... books are just not practical. Especially when I dip into whole series with many small volumes. So how are you digital nomading (aka permanently on the move with no home base) and still use phyical books?

I gotta defend those classic, library-esque bookcases. It gives the bookcases more character before any books or knickknacks are added. And those parts at the top that partially block out books are where you can put your guilty pleasure reads!

Don't feel bad about your shelf. I feel like this trend of pretty looking shelves goes a little too far sometimes. Books aren't just pretty objects to be looked at, they're fundamentally stories to be experienced. That's literally their entire point. Of course it's nice to have pretty things to look at, but I would never put down the charme of well used and loved books. I had to learn that myself, too. Used to be one of those people who always bought books new amd they 100% have to match or else. But the more secondhand I buy, the more I appreciate their little flaws. They're like little messages from previous readers, sometimes literally when you find notes or dedications in them. All in all, don't be ashamed of your shelf. Embrace the love your books got instead.

Not sure if this has been said before, but if you're keeping the lower shelves of your bookcases empty PLEASE only do so if your bookcases are attached to the wall. Many top heavy bookcases have and will fall over simply because the bottom is not filled with heavy books/is not supported enough. Unless the shelves are heavy themselves or they're attached to the wall, I'd make sure you fill the bottom shelves up first thing.
@visionsofjanuary798 Жыл бұрын
This. We have a lot of bigger heavier books, and they live on the bottom two shelves of our bookshelves for this exact reason.

Maybe bit of both in the future? Some hahas with genuine advice for people who put effort? But it should be something you love to do also, it's no fun to watch someone getting bored over same thing over and over again, especially if both options are something to look forward to.

Commets on shelving organization by a not do tall person: Top shelves are for tiny books, or books you will not re-read but still want to keep (like children books you don't want actual children to reach or technical books). Essentially top shelf books don't exist because we cannot reach it nor see it. Middle high: collections and repeated authors Middle shelf books are for beautiful collections and treasure books. Middle bottom: Books that are not in a collection or we don't have more of the same author Bottom: children books or really heavy and big books Behind the books: not so pretty books we still want to keep Note: Cookbooks do not go on the bookshelf. They have a tiny shelf for them in the kitchen so the other books don't get dirty and smelly. Note 2: organization criteria genre, hight, author/collection (do not separate book collections or authors, if not the same hight they stay near the shelf wall and you can split vertically in two shelves, and if every criteria checks, then and only then color)
