Getting over 43 mpg after some practice in my new RAV4 hybrid! Initially, I was doing too much. I was trying to use the electric ability as much as possible. Watching the graphic engine power graphic...charging the battery/using the battery...trying to avoid the ICE. Shooting for the "Pulse and glide method." After about 4 weeks, I embraced some ideas that have earned 3mpg better. First, I learned that using the electric battery (process of charging the electric battery with the gas engine) is not without its own parasitic drain...and second, the ICE engine is very efficient in its own right. So, I started doing less jockeying of the vehicle to "stay in electric" and let it do it's own thing...It will do the work for you! It will choose the most efficient mode of operation. I do look ahead to anticipate stops and incorporate coasting time. I do speed up gradually. In forums and on youtube I've seen the proposal to: "get up to speed so you can coast and get off the ICE engine." This sounds well thought out...and I wasn't gunning it to get to speed either...just not delaying....anyway...it wasn't panning out. I just speed up gradually...slow down gradually and let the car do the rest. 43.6 mpg average now. It was enlightening to me to see the vehicle get its best numbers after taking a highway trip when it should be less efficient as hybrids go. But...the highway driving limited my ability to jockey the electric battery and I had to allow the vehicle to do its own thing. And surprise, surprise...the average mpg shot up. I thought what Jeff suggested here was too simplistic. Turns out he's absolutely right. It's just that simple.

bfsc chart for 2.4 or 2/.5 liter toyota inline 4 says 2/3 of max torque at 2k-3k rpm is most efficient, hybrid system is nice to minimize tire dust emissions , increasing tire life, and preventing traction loss from the big instant power output. some hybrids have a energy meter that show negative acceleration which is regenerative braking, more slowing down than that is using non regenerative brakes. maybe brakes automaticly use normal brakes without telling you sometimes for when battery is too cold (for battery longveity) and to prevent rusting of brakes by rubbing rust layer off before it infect the rest of the mass. but if it doesnt, you can use normal brakes once in a while for that. brake and steer steadily but minimally. make sure tire inflation is optimal, a bit stiffer is nice. thicker rubber and less metal wheel mass is less weight, pizza pans can cover front wheels for areodynamics and cardboard or plastic can fully cover rear wheels over the wheel at the panels closer to you around it, etc. think flight, julian edgar, are some youtuebr who did realtivly cheap areodynamics mods electric cars are no good, maybe hybrids are worrhthile

I’ve put 8,900 miles on my hybrid RAV4 Limited since driving it off the showroom two months ago. I took a long 7,000 mile trip and averaged around 43 mpg. I go for max efficiency and so I drive it in Eco Mode nearly all of the time and use EV mode as often as possible. So far, I have seriously enjoyed the car and have found little to be annoyed about!

@@Gopinathk17 Update: the odometer is presently showing about 12,000 elapsed miles since purchase in mid-August of this year. Everything seems to work well in Eco mode. In fact, I’ve enabled one of the available environmental controls labeled “Eco heat/cool” continuously in both summer and winter and I find that there’s plenty of heating and cooling capacity to keep the cabin very comfortable. Regarding the engine/electric hybrid power train, the car’s acceleration in Eco mode forces me back into the seat very nicely when merging into traffic. There’s no complaint from me in this regard. All in all, this compact SUV is one nice little Swiss Army Knife of a car! Hope this helps.

According to the speed, there is a blue line creeping up, your foot must bring the green line just at the end of the blue line (ideal) or just left to its end (not as far left as possible. For coasting, if you can just put the foot on the accelator a little bit, just the force needed to charge the battery, you get more coasting distance. Rav4Prime driver from Germany.

There's really nothing on KZbin that explains the Eco Score screen so I appreciate it. I have a 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid so find the video somewhat outdated and not as helpful as I had hoped because my car's layout of Eco Score screen is a bit different than the one on the video. Regardless. I enjoy your channel's content, Jeff!

Another great video Jeff. Not sure if you mentioned this but you can also put your heating/cooling in Eco mode also and also by setting the temp cooler in cold temps & set the temp higher in hot weather..... it all adds up to higher mpg. My new XSE is always in eco mode & my temp button in eco mode 98% of the time (only when it's extremely cold I'll take it off eco mode for a few minutes until the interior warms up a bit).

Corolla 2022 HE owner here, cruising score: is quite easy to get it high as long as yo maintain a bell curve from start to stop nor a roller coaster type of driving which will happen with moderate traffic or in hilly terrain. Acceleration: I've notice that the higher score is obtained when you accelerate close to the pwr zone although it may seem counterintuitive because the ICE kicks in sooner but that way I've obtain the 5 bars, the fun part is that you really get that torque from the motor and a almost exciting acceleration the doubtful part is that mpg meter has gone lower while applying this technique but dunno if it's caused by it or maybe other factor like the tire psi which I haven't check in 3 months. Braking: this is the hardest for me beacuse I always begin braking long before get fully stopped however if you don't calculate this well I end up pressing more the pedal in the last meters and this is penalized by the score meter on the other hand sometimes I begin pressing a bit more the pedal at the beginning of the deceleration but just too much pressing the pedal and again this is penalized, so my best result is pressing a little bit and getting the longest distance possible before coming to a full stop without pressing the pedal too much. Then you have the B gear which helps when driving above 30miles per hour or on steep decends but unsure of its efficiency to produce electricity so far

Thanks for sharing this with us Jeff. It's nice to know now just how this works. I never knew just how this worked and now I have a little better understanding of it. If you would not have shared this video I probably would never have known just how this works. I love when you do videos like this and show us little things with different vehicles that we might not have known. I try to drive more careful but not always easy to do depending on what kind of traffic I am in. I know I tend to be a little bit to much of a lead foot person and need to back off more. I know if I baby my vehicle a little more my MPG would go up a little more and that would help.

Hybrids are not only meant for efficiency, some hybrids are designed for performance, this is why we are getting more and more hybrid configuration even in top end super/hyper cars, the reason is because hybrids can benefit from the instant torque of an electric motor which is a major benefit from the perspective of performance vehicle

The eco score is my standard screen. Don't like the MPG because I'll fixate on it. With the eco score, I just keep an eye that the "green" bar less than the "blue" bar most of the time and everything works out. Don't use ECO and 45-46 in town during the Summer, but only about 30-32 in the Winter in Iowa. Not complaining though, 30 in the Winter is pretty good.
@Gopinathk17

Why only 30 in the winter? Due to too much heating in use?
@dj3114
@dj3114 Жыл бұрын
@@Gopinathk17 Yes, living in Iowa in the Winter, the second the car senses that it's cold, even pulling out of a garage, the engine starts for the heat. It has to get around 0 to drop to 30 MPG. If out awhile, it begins to use the battery at times, even in the cold.

Eco score is nice for beginners, I never look at it. I’m watching EV indicator. As you can see, it was 72 mph and EV light was on, mean gas engine was off. Not sure how powerful EV system in rav4, but Prius can go on highway in EV on downhills even on flat for a little. That is making your highway mpg higher. But always look at your rear view mirror, don’t create traffic. Not all people concern about mpg.

Pretend you have an egg under your foot at all times and you’ll get the highest score. That said it is NOT worth the effort to try and get just a few more MPGs versus just driving normal. Do the math and you’ll see your annual savings is chump change. Example 45 mpg vs 40 mpg. 5 mpg difference over say 12k miles is 35 more gallons of gas. For my in GA that’s about $125 or $10 a month. My sanity is worth the extra $10 per month not trying to drive hyper efficiently all the time as well as having to leave earlier because driving slower takes you longer to get places.

Eco mode only works under certain things. You can't go hard on the gas, you can't use it when it's too cold or too hot, you can't use it when it's too low, you can't use it when you're already going higher than 60 Kmph. It's look like a downside but it isn't at all. It automatically turns on if you go slow after starting the car or you let your foot off the gas on the road. Toyota always has the last 2-3 gallons as reserved just in case you get stuck. Its not part of the gas range meter. I know because i drove 60 miles extra on empty like 0 miles of range left and when i filled it up i went from the usual 11.5 gallons to 14gallons

Eco score makes no sense. I just averaged 52.1 mpg on my last drive and the eco score was 44. I find this happens regularly. I get high mpg and my eco score is lower than when I get worse mpg.

Thanks to insidiously well designed gamification, the Prius V I just picked up that lists as 45mpg, yet I've gotten as much as 52 in only a few weeks. Important: For Prius V the goal isn't "Under Red", it's "As close to red as possible", because staying well under red has given me substantially worse MPG that getting a good speed, then cruising.

Toyota rav4 2022 is rated to give 570miles per fill up no matter how I drive I cannot seem to get over 450 miles per fill up. Anybody else have same issue? Any suggestions Jeff or is it Toyota is just full of horse pucky?

I know it has a 14 and a half gallon tank. I know most people are not going to drive all the way till empty. When you fill up your gas tank you probably have 2-3 gallons left in it if you get to under a quarter tank of gas. But I average 40mpg x 14.5= 580

Just picked up our 2022 RAV4 hybrid xse. I’m feeling the same way as you jack. I’ll get an eco score of 80 or above but I can’t get better mpg than 33. I only have 180 miles on it. Not sure if this will slowly get better as time goes by. I really hope so because that’s not even close to what it’s rated for. I live in Houston where it’s mostly flat and the driving is mixed highway. Has anyone else experienced this?

Don't drive around in ECO Mode. Drive in Normal Mode. ECO Mode is only for slow moving traffic situations. Best methods of getting higher MPG is to check tyre pressures regularly/use the Climate Controls sparingly/keep windows closed/drive smoothly.
