The film begins with young Hank Williams trying to earn money by pitching a snake-oil cure-all to the gullible, capping his spiel by picking up his guitar and singing. In the crowd is The Drifting Cowboys, a group of touring country-western musicians who happen to be passing through. They invite Hank Williams to join their group, and music history is made. Memphis-born George Hamilton is winningly natural as Williams in the musical biopic of the short-lived but forever influential "Hillbilly Shakespeare." It's a deeply felt story, made with the assistance of his widow Audrey and featuring timeless songs (Long Gone Lonesome Blues, I Can't Help It and Hey, Good Lookin' among them) lip-synched by Hamilton but sung by another C&W great: Hank Williams, Jr. The end scene (when the audience is notified that Williams has passed away while on the way there) is a powerful one, as one audience member stands up umprompted and begins to sing "I Saw the Light". Others stand up quickly and join him, as the spotlight shines on the stage where Hank should be. This was similar to what actually happened after Williams died, as Hawkshaw Hawkins and several musicians began singing "I Saw The Light" , and the crowd joined in, thinking at first that the announcement was an act, but when Hawkins and co. began singing, the crowd realized it was no act
Lyrics:
Your cheatin' heart
Will make you weep
You'll cry and cry
And try to sleep
But sleep won't come
The whole night through
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you...
When tears come down
Like falling rain
You'll toss around
And call my name
You'll walk the floor
The way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you...
Your cheatin' heart
Will pine some day
And crave the love
You threw away
The time will come
When you'll be blue
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you...
When tears come down
Like falling rain
You'll toss around
And call my name
You'll walk the floor
The way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you...

On this day in 1964 {November 4th} the Hank Williams bio-movie "Your Cheatin' Heart" had its world premiere in Montgomery, Alabama... Hank Jr. dubbed in his father's singing voice in the movie, his was fifteen years at the time... Exactly eleven years later on Nov. 4th, 1975 Hank Sr.'s first wife*, Audrey, passed away at the young age of 52... * The Williams' divorced was finalized on July 10th, 1952; six months before Hank Sr's passing on Jan. 1st, 1953...

Glenn Johnson Saw the film when it was released and although a lot of it was technically wrong,i did like some the tracks by Hank Jnr on the album release. That way i wasn`t comparing Hank Snrs versions as portrayed in the film. They were playing saxophones on some of the tunes!!!!What.Just couldn`t believe why they did that!So inaccurate! All this aside, still love Hank Snrs music. Will never die!

If one studied the issues behind this movie, one would know that Mr. Williams Sr. had married Billy Jean just a few months before his death. The movie "Your Cheatin' Heart shows Audrey Mae as a devoted wife. That is NOT true. The movie shows that Audrey Mae was a devoted wife. Also, the movie shows that Audrey Mae was there on the day it was announced at the theatre that Hank Sr. had died. That is not true. The movie said that Audrey Mae had the band, The Drifting Cowboys. That is NOT true. Hank Sr. formed this group. So if you want to see a show that shows a more true story, then watch "I Saw the Light". I am sure that it shows some made up sections, it did show that Audrey Mae was not the perfect life that was protrayed in "Your Cheatin' wife". Even Wikipedia gives more of the basic truths behind the issues of Mr. Williams Sr. GET THE TRUTH BEFORE YOU WATCH "Your Cheatin' Wife". If you watch the credits, it shows that Audrey Mae was one of the people that was consulted for this movie. Of course Audrey Mae would give info that would make her look good. Also, one needs to really understand the reason why Hank Sr. was in so much pain. I did NOT know until I watched "I Saw the Light" and read history on Mr. Williams Sr. that he had spina bifida. This caused Mr. Williams Sr. lifelong pain. Yes, he drank too much and used 'nutcases' to give him medicine that was not meant for humans. It does make one realize more fully the reason why he had lifelong drinking and drug habits. Also, the movie shows "Your Cheatin' Heart" that Hank Sr. fell off of a horse & hurt his back. Wikipedia states that he was out hunting when he fell. That led to him being admited to a hospital & having surgery on his back. I hope this brief statement will help people to see that the movie "Your Cheatin' Heart' is not based on true facts. (only the facts that Audrey Mae wanted people to know). It is best to get the full truth. Also, I learned from reading materials, that Hank Sr. had made legal documents about the unborn child with Bobbi before their baby was born. With those documents (which were hidden from for some time from his daughter), his daughter was able to obtain half of her Dad's estate. Study the facts; they sure make a difference in seeing the real facts...just not what Audrey Mae wanted shown on a 'fake movie'.

Sarah Pyle Any life story put to film, especially more than a decade after the subject is deceased is granted creative license...this is to ensure that the photoplay will be interesting and palatable to the public. This was a common practice in the 60s...it is often credited to individuals as "story adaptation" and screenplay. One with little or no embellishments was virtually unheard of in the era that this film emerged from.

@@randyfrancis2808, plus you had the fact that Audrey was pretty well in control of Hank's "legacy" at that point. You'll also notice that his two biggest hits, Lovesick Blues and Wedding Bells, are strangely absent. The reason behind this is they wanted to use songs controlled by Acuff-Rose, and those two weren't. The Tom Hiddleston movie came a lot closer to getting it right, though there are still issues on it. Your Cheatin' Heart was described as a movie better heard than seen, and it was mainly a vehicle to get Bocephus in the public eye.

I saw the movie when I was sixteen, almost seventeen. My girl friend, who was (and always will be) the love of my life was with me as we saw the movie in Augusta, Georgia the Skyview drive-in theater. The thoughts of that night have stayed with me ever since then. We also had with us, her mother, two younger sisters and a younger brother. It was a special evening, of which I will never forget. I didn't know anything about the movie details, I just knew that I was deeply in love with my girl friend. It was during Christmas vacation that we saw this move, while I was in Augusta for the Christmas holidays. My home was in New Orleans, where I had to return. The distance was too great for us, and we never got married. She died two years ago, which really hurt me when I found out about her death. To this day, I look back at the time that we saw, "Your Cheatin' Heart," and other things that were so special to us; I don't expect that will change, and don't want it to (change).
