Another fantastic video essay! As a fan of Scottish football, I've noticed how our clubs poor engagement online has affected their relationships with the public. A large reason for Celtic and Rangers' commercial dominance is how much they invest in social media and trending tech companies.
@TheLongPlayUK3 ай бұрын
This is interesting. Leeds United for example are excellent at social media it's a shame they're in the Championship at the moment. Are there any other clubs outside of the Big 2 who do things well in Scotland?

What does "inventing in trending tech companies" mean? They used their cash to buy stocks instead of transfer fees?

@@TheLongPlayUK I would say that Hearts (Heart of Midlothian) are making a lot of progress, although their run of form on the pitch is terrible. They’re the largest fan owned club in Britain, have made several upgrades in the stadium, such as scoreboards and plasma TV’s in the stands and regularly sell out home games. I’d argue they have the largest social media presence outside of the old firm
@Shendersonsports30033 ай бұрын
@@ninjalectualx no, it’s more like they’re constantly looking for opportunities that will stick and expand their operations. Celtic for example now have a Japanese set of social media accounts, because they’ve bought a few Japanese internationals. The payoff is that they’ve now got an eastern market of fans and more money coming in from overseas.

That's not "investing in tech," that's just doing marketing. When you said tech you just meant modern marketing?

This reminds of Liverpool, who at the end of the 1980s was biggest team in England. The Premier League was created and sky coverage of English games was shown globally around the world leading to massive global fan base interested in English teams. Man Utd understood this global change and engaged this global fan base with international tours and opening shows globally, turning them into the richest and biggest club in the world. Liverpool in the 1990s rejected this new globalise world and despite being the most popular English club due to their international success and domination of English football, the then Liverpool Chairman Rick Parry said we don’t need to worry about international fans and the fans that matter are the fans in Liverpool. So Liverpool didn’t go on preseason tours on different continents and set up shops internationally. This created a massive financial gap between Liverpool and Man Utd leading to Man Utd dominating the Premier League. It took decades for for Liverpool to close that gap and monetise their popularity with FSG.

This is a fascinating insight and a prime example of a company/team being slow to innovate. It only takes a couple of years of being behind to notice the difference

"the fans that matter are the fans in Liverpool" I hate this attitude. There isn't a fanbase in the world as snobby and arrogant as the English. They don't deserve clubs like Liverpool.

@@TheLongPlayUK As a Liverpool fan as much as I hate lack of investment in the team and ambition of FSG they were the people who brought that more global mentality to club off the field and managed to monetise their global popularity more closing the gap between them and Man Utd. Maybe you should do a video on why so many Americans are buying English teams. My theory is they believe English clubs are horribly undervalued given their global reach that far outstrips NBA and NFL teams, but are only a fraction of cost to buy. I think the Americans are working towards a Netflix of the Premier League and cut out the global broadcast and take all the revenue where anyone in the world can subscribe and get full access to any Premier League game, that could see Premier League revenue increase 20 times minimum. Also American celebrities are buying into English teams because they viewed as the new high interest accounts with big returns that are a tax loop hole. The Hollywood Wrexham owners purchased the club for only 2 million and the club is now valued at 30 million.

Another great video. Whether a separate video or part of future videos, it would be great if you could take numbers adjusted for inflation into account. The $8B in 2014 would be $10.63B today. So liberty has definitely a lot of added value, but the number is slightly less impressive once inflation is accounted for.

Hey Jordan, loving your content so far. Have been engaging with your back catalogue. Some amazing insights. Just one thing, good to see the production quality go up but you're really close to your mic and the plosives from your voice are quite distracting. Might be a good idea to use a pop shield or just go old fashioned and use a shotgun/directional mic from above (off-screen) or a lav mic for clean, good quality audio. These Shure podcast mics are great but can be awful for those plosives.

Companies are realising the popularity of Barcelona and Real Madrid are way over-estimated and a lot of it is smoke and mirrors to trick companies into giving bigger sponsorships. Yes both clubs have most social media followers of any two clubs in the world, but a court case against their former President exposed Spanish clubs where companies to inflate their social media followers. This explained why their huge social media following didn’t match their global viewership, where when Real and Barcelona are not playing each other only average 40 million global viewers, much less than half the Premier League teams. This is why the La Liga global TV contract is much smaller than the Premier League, because TV companies around the world see the actual viewership numbers and know Real Madrid and Barcelona don’t deliver the subscriptions and viewers they like to project they do. The actual numbers show Liverpool and Man Utd are the biggest teams in the world. Their game is most watched club game in world football, they average the highest global viewership per game between 250 to 200 million and Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal sell more shirts than Real Madrid and Barcelona. This is why the Premier League TV contract is the biggest in every continent because English teams actually have a real global fan base that pay subscriptions and not social media bots.

In 2023 Barca made 179 million euros in shirt sales. Real madrid made 155 million, Liverpool 132 million. But yeah man united and liverpool are bigger clubs, at least in your dreams
@Delboy03 ай бұрын
@@zakalaca In units sold both Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal are above Real Madrid in 2021, 2022, 2023, which is why Adidas agreed to pay Liverpool next year more Real Madrid to be their kit manufacturer. And I know your figures are completely made up because neither Nike or Adidas published actual shirt sales profits, so you exposed yourself as a liar. Also in every major sport the biggest teams get the biggest TV contract. In baseball the New York Yankees have the biggest TV deal, in the NFL the Dallas Cowboys get the biggest TV deal and in the NBA the Lakers Lakers get the biggest TV deal. All these teams are the biggest teams in their sport so get the biggest TV contract. If Real Madrid and Barcelona really are the most popular teams in football, why does the Premier League have a TV contract almost three times bigger than La Liga? It is because TV companies around the would are not baffled by BS, self-promotion and marketing. They look at cold hard numbers and if you look at viewership globally for big 6 Premier League teams compared to Real Madrid and Barca, it is not even close, Real Madrid average an 6th of the audience Liverpool average globally. Premier League TV contract illustrates how much bigger English teams are globally. Even Florentino Perez Real Madrid president admitted English teams are bigger than Real Madrid and Barcelona globally in an interview with the The Times and he said his way to combat this was to buy famous players, especially from the Premier League who had that global exposure and self the myth of Real Madrid sporting success and sheeple like you accepted this marketing self-promotion as fact. ESPN South America 2 years ago published the top 10 most watched games on their network in South America. ESPN South America has the rights for Premier League and La Liga. This is an almost entirely Spanish speaking region in the world with cultural and historical links to Spain, as this is a Latin region. 8 of the top 10 games watched in 2022 were from the Premier League and El Classico was not even in the top 4 most watched games as the only 2 games not from England. This is why ESPN South America paid the Premier League more money than La Liga because the cold hard numbers show even in South America, more people watch English teams. This is the only continent Real Madrid and Barcelona should have more viewers than.
