I watched this more than 20 times already and as this topic I am learning to sharpen my ear I just started a week and I can feel the chord progressions much easier when doing this 'interval recognizing'. Yes its not still not perfect sometimes I dont get the progressions right but its very close to the right note.. so I do have a question to just clear things up in my mind because lots of things I think when I practice like this E is the 5th and it is sol.. C# is 3rd and it is mi.. something like that.. so now I am thinking... can recognizing this intervals help me in building up better guitar solos that you will not be playing by the scales up and down and have much more potential in fretboard.. anyways this channel is great. Im having hard time in learning but its nice to see you teach in creative ways.. truly legend.

Having perfect pitch is a unique gift that very few musicians possess. However relative pitch is a skill that most musicians can acquire through ear training and practice. I hope your students see the value of this particular lesson. Thank you Tomo for all you give us.

Even having perfect pitch, you need a great sense of music and this prefect pitch will decrease when you get older...so build your own sandwich is great too! I mean relative prefect pitch! Thanks so much!

I’ve been trying to remember from 50 years ago. Here is how it was. C scale is the base point. All the White keys. Memorized to the point of automation. Then when Keys changed like to D then we only had to remember 2 notes instead of 7. When we see a F or C on the stanza then Shift up half a tone. Your ears will tell you if your right. Instead of remembering 7 new notes. Just remember the little changes. erg. Key of G only F goes sharp. Key of F only B goes flat. You already have the other notes placement and pitches memorized. There is never a mix of sharps and flats in any Key. Just the random accidentals. If C Chord is mastered its then very easy to play the rest. Memorizing C Scale is the starting point of all. So yes, taking a Year or more to learn the C scale intimately is a worthy cause. Record Listen Repeat

Ear training is a lifelong commitment because music is a lifelong commitment--glad you made that connection. Ear training goes well beyond those free interval trainers on the internet. 13 years into training my ears and I am still learning how to work on something new with my ears everyday. There's some keyboard videos on my channel where I demonstrate how I use ear training when I work on jazz standards. Key take away--Tomo mentioned this in passing--but ear training is key bound, just like 95% of music--even most "atonal music"--is key bound. You may do some traveling in a tune, but you always go back home--back to the home key (even Giant Steps). Don't be afraid to sing as singing is the quickest way to internalize the sounds you hear in your head and label them in a manner that makes sense to you. Another fun tidbit, the further you get into ear training--the more you discover HOW you hear (which is different person to person). You can sing theory, you can sing basslines/root movement, you can sing solos. Chops and theory are important, but your ears bring it ALL to life :)

The last bit was a great life advice Gotta come up with a list of things to pursue, but not too much Otherwise u lose focus. For the first time I disagree, just slightly, use numbers to sing. I just started the triad and one string scale. Numbers glue music theory to the practice. Now I can move up the scale to, let’s say, the fifth, and all I need is the chord inversion with the fifth on the note I’m on…that’s the key of the song. Or, if I change that fifth to be a chord with the first on the fifth, that’s the five chord. And it’s simple to do a Sus 2. If I use Solfège I need to translate and this slows me down. Now with numbers it’s easy😅to practice inversions just singing. 1 3 5, and hold the sound in my head and start 3 5 1 ( up the octave for the guitar), the 3 and five are the same note on the guitar, the 1 an octave higher. Then sing 5 1 3, remember the sounds 5 and 1 are the same, 3 moves up an octave on the guitar. So I can sing chord inversions on the guitar without even a guitar. Just relating my own insights from practice of Tomo’s practice method. Others might not find it easy, but for me one language, numbers, is better than two, numbers and Solfège…
