I’ve had my alocasia frydek in leca going on three years now and She’s provided me with at least twelve large and thriving children that some of which I keep and some of which I’ve given away but all of them have lived in leca all of their lives except for three, every single time I try to put an alocasia in moss or in soil they frikken die on me a slow, long and painful death over time while only maintaining 1-2 leaves at any given moment. I have a few other alocasias in leca for less than the three years I’ve had with my frydek and I’ve noticed with jewel alocasias they’re much more sensitive to their roots being fully submerged. I’ve done the Kratke method and it’s worked for a while but I’ve found with the jewels that if your not really on top of those roots and keeping them above the nutrient solution as much as you possibly can they will eventually rot. I’ve gotten lucky with such large root systems (I overfeed my plants before the point of nutrient burn but I bill them up by gradually bumping up until doubling the recommended dose) so as long as I catch it in time I can just depot the plant, remove the rotten roots and replant the plant into clean leca with a smidge of hydrogen peroxide in the solution and they bounce right back I have a silver dragon that just grew a new leaf after having recently done this process and it’s just as big and beautiful as the leaves it always grew. Another tip for the lazy gardeners out there: if your worried about having a plants roots sitting in the solution than you can add a ratio of 1/10 hydrogen peroxide to the solution you keep your plants in (do some research on the ingredients in your solution and how they interact with the molecules that make up hydrogen peroxide to ensure your plants get their much needed nutrients) but this has always worked wonders for me and really does make a difference I don’t even mix it in with my solution I just eyeball a wee little squirt when I’m done replacing or topping up my solution (keeping in mind if I’m only topping off that there’s likely peroxide in the solution already so adding less in that situation) but it really does but you time off your a busy plant parent. The best way to ensure you don’t experience root rot is keeping those roots above the solution level and allowing the leca to do its job and wick up the solution to the roots instead of allowing them to grow into it. Now I know this is a full time job because anyone with successful leca plants knows those roots do be growin at a pace similar to the speed of light but it really is worth it to check in once a week if your plants are in clear pots even easier of a task but it’s worth the extra work because alocasias in semi hydro are some of the most beautiful specimens compared to they’re soil dwelling brethren. Granted everyone is different and some have amazing success with alocasias in soil I am not one of those people and I think attempting them in leca is 1000% worth it because once you get it down your rewarded abundantly with giant, gorgeous leaves and a plant that isn’t ever part of the one leaf club haha

Dear Jenna, I have no idea how I am going to respond to your comment. It is the most comprehensive one I have ever seen and I am eternally grateful. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to share your experiences. I will certainly be trying out what you suggest and maybe I can get on top of my Jewels. Thank you 😊.

Thank you for answering my question! That was very helpful. I've had some plants do as you showed, but some have had all the roots rot, so I'll be doing the long method going forward so I can monitor the roots more closely. Thanks again :)

Thank you again for another informative video, I’d like to say that I have had that same issue with knats in my semi-hydro. I’ve seen knats in my leca, I’ve changed the leca, disinfected the roots of the plane with hydrogen peroxide but the knats are still there.
