The “waiting 24 hours before buying the thing you want” is actually an incredible helpful tip. When I go “emotional shopping” I leave my items in the basket for a day before purchasing because most of time I realise the next day I don’t really need or want to those things. I just wanted to shop to feel better. I’ve saved so much money doing that. God knows where I would be if I bought all of those things.
@shan65535 жыл бұрын
I found the “jar method” to help me as I used shopping as an emotional release for YEARS. Basically, you get jars and write what the expense is on that jar (ie- gas money). Then you take out your entire pay check in cash (sans money to cover bank fees) and divide and budget that amount of money into the various jars for that pay period. No money in the jar means no spending in that area. This method really made me cut back on my spending.

Torre Johnson 100% yes. Just using clear jars helps you visually see what’s left in your jars. Just an added level of ease for people who really struggle with money.

Tehya Mendez if possible, switch from automated withdrawal for bills to you physically having to go pay the bill either in person/online. This will also allow you to be more mindful of your overall spending.

I do this but by having multiple accounts with specific names. My bank is also working on creating "buckets" so you can divide your money into specific categories or goals.

I have the opposite problem but now I'm pretty good at spending money and still VERY good at saving (debt free over here aside from Australia's student loans - a tenth of those in the US if not less). The BEST bit of advice I can give anyone is this: EVERYTHING physical that you buy is something else to take care of. It's like getting a pet. You have to wash those clothes and store them, you have to find space for those mugs and keep them clean. Every little item needs attention and invites making choices. :)

One thing I do is keep a Pinterest board of treats / things I love which I have received as gifts or that I’ve bought for myself as a treat. When I get emotional and want to spend, I take a look at the board and it cuts through the self-talk that I “never get anything” and that “no one cares”

I will save my cash on really depressing periods in my life, not really feeling motivated to buy anything Then once i feel stable enough emotionally(or so I thought) I just blow it all on things that don’t even make sense and go back home feeling bad about myself and the cycle continues cause now I’m broke and sad I’m broke and feel poorer than everyone around me and ughhhhhhHh

My emotional spending doesn't tend to be stuff for me, but around this time of year wanting to make everyone have a good gift I end up getting a bunch of small gifts for everyone when I find something I think a person would like or could use... my biggest problem is buying the things for other people that I know they want or could really use, but probably wouldn't do for themselves because they do for others more than themselves. I love the feeling when you have given someone a gift that really means something to them

I have almost the opposite extreme of emotional spending/impulse buying. I can spend an hour in one or two aisles just deciding what I want, comparing, calculating the pros and cons, etc. With online shopping, my indecisiveness is worse because the money is not tangibly being handed over. I have a budget (typically about $25 because free shipping), I put things into my cart, and leave them in my cart. For days. Often, I do a lot of changing up the items in my cart before I hit the order button... or not!

I have ADHD and my finances are in shambles. Oddly enough, I’m not much of an impulsive shopper, just buying something as soon as I see it, but instead I become overly obsessed with something I want or tell myself I need for some business idea that I was cooking up. So I’ll obsess over something, sometimes weeks on end before buying it. Either way, it’s usually not within my budget. The other thing I do is eat out a lot. Not at sit down restaurants, but mostly fast food. It just chips away at my bank account till I’m broke and waiting for payday.

Two amazing KZbinrs on one great topic! :) Waiting a day or even a week is the best way to see if you really want to buy something. I keep a running list on the notes section of things I want to buy and I often find myself deleting items off the list. I always research before I buy, so sometimes if I am not motivated enough to do the research, then I probably shouldn't make the purchase. I also categorize my spending and see what my monthly averages are for spending in each category. It is probably the best habit I staretd in 2019 because I wanted to start seeing where my money was going.

19:40 - Experiences are terrible investments; you can't sell them if your kid gets sick or your house burns down. Millennials have a tendency to blow most of their money on food, concerts, and travel instead of stuff. That's very short-term, youthful thinking. Once they're older, they'll wish they had some _things_ as a safety net and some _stuff_ to pass on to their kids.

Thanks Kati , money , the grand love - hate relationship most of us have. We are never really sure how much we need and never feel we have enough. Thanks to Chelsea for working with you on this. Emotions + Cash in the hand = nothing for a rainy day !! I am not the best with money , but I did find that having a separate place for the "break glass in case of emergency " fund is vital , just so sad that too must dwindle over time and necessity negates the madness of reckless spending money , one must live. This is a subject that is truly a 'Circle' , a beginning is an impossible thing , just as ending will never happen. Might have to reanimate Carl J. for help on this one !! "My grandpa just saved and saved and saved." "And then he died." "HE DID!" Dark humor yes, but that had me rolling but it makes me wonder what his intentions behind that were? Was he singularly focused on making sure his wife (if she was still around) was taken care of? Did he want to leave something to his kids? People and their relationship to money is fascinating. When you have control of your money, what you do with it speaks to what you value.

I'm quite good at finances, but I have an eating disorder. I've found that my relationship with money is how I want my relationship with food to be. I have a budget: I need to pay my bills (i.e. eat enough + enough veg/protein etc) to keep all the utilities (organs) functioning. I need gas in the car and set some aside for maintenance. But I also need to give myself permission to splurge here and there (i.e. I *can* eat a cookie, just not all the cookies all the time). I plan ahead and I make sure there's enough in all different categories so I don't fall prey to impulse buys. For unplanned purchases, I have a waiting period. For binges, I'm trying to say to myself "you CAN have a bag of crisps, but let's just do something else first.' When I say that to myself, it does becomes less interesting, and after that waiting period, the urges fade more often than not. I think it's to do with autonomy; I get intensely riled up when I get the feeling I should do something... and the urge to do the exact opposite becomes insane (heyo, kid of strict parents here!). But when it becomes my voluntary choice between two equal options, the naughtiness of the bad choice is just less appealing. The same with saving money: if I tell myself I can't spend 50 bucks on shoes because I should save, I start fighting that. If I think, 'okay, I could buy these shoes for 50 bucks, let's check back tomorrow so I can look over my budget tonight and sleep on it'... I usually forget the shoes as soon as I'm home again! My budget used to be too tight and I failed each month. When I gave myself a reasonable amount of guilt-free spending money, my budget really took off and my savings went through the roof. I know (as I should know for eating): I can have anything I want. Not everything I want.

J S I know this probably not what u want to hear but if ur therapist thinks u should be in patient, there’s probably a reason. You can always compromise & see if there’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) an intensive outpatient professional (IOP) in the area. I’m currently in an PHP and it’s been an AMAZING experience so far! It’s like getting on a recovery fast track. You get out what u put in but I’ve made so much progress in just a few days & they were able to drastically change my meds to get me stabilized. I know going to a higher level of care sounds terrible but it can be a great experience if u let it. Good luck!

Kati, I’m the exact opposite. I feel like I save too much money. I’m 27 now, but I’ve always been very worried about spending. Seeing my mom struggle with money has made me weary of spending too much, but I am not my mom. My dad was the opposite, or at least, always acted like he was well off. He passed away this February and it turns out he was in a lot of debt. My therapist mentioned to me, perhaps he didn’t want others to worry / or sort of a pride thing. That made me really go hmm.. wow you could be right! Anyhow, I’ve gotten better, but it’s so interesting how there’s always the opposite side of the spectrum.

Love the team up here! 2 of my fave YTers together! Love your advice about looking at the numbers. In the moment. Check the checking account before I walk to the check out line and view the price tag! I would avoid price tags at all cost and then feel a little shocked once it’s all wrung up. Thinking - if I spend this much here now, it’s ok, but it means next week, we need to cut our grocery bill by half, or that right now I can this or television service or extracurriculars for our kids... which is a bigger priority? Like asking myself, “Does this extra stuff mean more to us than groceries next week?” Also, it’s like a time budget - it will go by. At 5:30 in the morning, when I want to watch videos in my warm bed instead of waking the kids up to get ready for school on time, I have to remind myself of all our tardies this year (way too many) how embarrassing it is for my daughter, an all A student in her own right - to keep showing up late because mommy made an excuse for bad behavior. Dho! That hurts. The pain motivates me to get up and spend the time preparing for the school dropoff in a less rushed, more relaxed way, less anxious, and I get to enjoy the reward of getting them to school with extra time for them to play with their friends o the playground before class. They love that and deserve it. And it makes me feel more in control and sets me up for getting more done with my day because kids around the house are distracting from other goals. And videos. Lol.

Hi Katie! I’m not sure if this is a question that’s been previously answered, but do you ever have clients struggle to speak or are only able to whisper/mumble when difficult topics arise? If so, do you know why that happens and how might you suggest resolving this issue? I do not have a very loud voice to begin with, but whenever I’m working through trauma memories in session, I can never get my voice to be loud enough to hear it on the recording device used for imaginal homework. It feels similar to having a bad cold/losing your voice where simply trying to speak louder doesn’t prove very effective. If you have the time, any insight you have would be helpful! Thank you for all that you do; it most certainly does not go unappreciated!!

Trauma can be extremely difficult to think about, much less talk about. So it is totally understandable having a hard time getting the words out about what has happened in the past. Personally for my trauma i put off talking about it for a while because talking about it made it feel more real versus not talking about it made it easier in a way for me because it was easier to pretend it didn't happen. I commend you for going to counseling and talking about it regardless of the volume of your voice because it can be like climbing a mountain.

Which is just a habit of Running from feelings of inadequacy, problems etc & Good old anxiety, depression, the pains of just living !!!.lol. Also , Perhaps volunteer, helping out somebody with moving ,cleaning shopping, ( This helps your shopping addiction , but you're buying stuff that they need) . make time to help a friend, or your family, Or Any person that you enjoy. What they teach you And how you feel after , you can't put a price on!. You will have No guilt! Like the guilt, you feel after your retail therapy.... Time is money! So if you feel like buying a friend a gift, perhaps give them the gift of your time! Visiting with them or helping them in some little way, .. You will have an incredible feeling that's uplifting.. That you can't put into words and put a price on... Listening to your video, does track on the things I often do , Although now that I'm older..in the past. I still have a slips!! I'm in addiction therapy probably for the rest of my life because there is no cure for my brain yet. It's very interesting how much all of my defects stem in PTSD behavior and addict behavior and my first step was scheduling and making sure I didn't replace my addiction with work because that also effects my reward center in my brain. Also of course spending on frivolous things that I never touch again but at some point in my life I wanted it so I buy it. It's really kind of scary when I started educating and practicing tools I've gathered along the way. To me I feel like I'm gaining ground on my behaviors through education and meditation. Thank you again for sharing with us things that really matter to me. 🏳️🌈❤🏳️🌈

I find I’m less of an emotional spender in the sense that of feeling bad and buying something to make it better, but instead I enjoy buying new things and often do it when I’m in a good mood. I was happy about finding out I was getting holiday pay for Christmas so I just bought some skin care stuff (to be fair, it was on sale, and all but one thing was stuff I regularly use and am close to running out of, but if it hadn’t been for the Christmas pay I probably would have waited longer and paid full price 😂) I actually enjoy budgeting as well! I went through a long period of feeling really stuck, just lost between being a “real” adult and still being a kid, and it was like the first time I sat down and evaluated what I regularly spend it gave me something to do that a “real” adult would do, and I figured out I had more room to get extra stuff and still be able to save than I thought!

It all depends on why we are or are not eating. If we are doing it a way to cope with other things.. or numb out from other things then it's an ED. If we are just too stressed or anxious and don't remember to, then it's not an ED. Does that make sense? It's all about how much of our brain space is spent thinking about food. If it's most of our thoughts.. then it's an ED. xoxo I hope that helps!

Do you have any tips or resources for people who have trouble "allowing" themselves to spend? Your comment connecting disordered eating to spending habits (people who restrict food tend to restrict spending; people who binge food tend to binge spending) was a real light bulb moment for me, because I exhibit both of the former two tendencies and I never connected them before to an unhealthy desire to control, restrict ... almost punish? myself. Many thanks.

Unrelated to vid. But has anyone had their social anxiety mistaken for arrogance? I’m getting this a lot

I'm living in a small city in Indonesia with an irregular income and I find this very helpful and validating. Thank the lord I have no debt and I live at home, I work freelance and I immediately save 30% of what I make and live off the rest. It's not easy making a regular income off of working the way I do, it's not easy getting nice things but I do give myself permission to have treats every now and then. I haven't had a project in about six months and it's stressful seeing my numbers dwindling, I hope I don't have to use my savings account, I'm keeping that for future investments but who knows..

So I found out my husband is messing around with his secretary. For years I never spent money on myself. Not even to meet my basic needs. I just went out spent $500 on myself. Screw him. Plan on doing it again. Soon.

Pickles432 Noname please reach out to a mental health professional to help you sort out everything ur going through! Splurging on urself may feel amazing right now but it’s only a temporary high. Get in w/ a therapist & then decide if u want to stay in the marriage or not. Good luck!

Great topic! If you talk about money again please mention budgeting with a partner, it feels harder for some reason.

Hi Kati i don’t know if you read the comments but i wanted to ask something. I have a problem with eye contact and i have to do my best to not get head tremors when i have to be looking someone in the eyes. It really keeps me away from talking to people. My mother said she also has a problem with eye contact but she doesn’t get these tic. Is it adrenaline? Can i do something to not have it?

As a psychology student I am very comfortable talking about "taboo" topics and i forget that its not normal sometimes and i get those "😮" faces from family members like oh my god i can't believe you just casually talked about sex health. I gave my younger cousin the talk because her parents refused to an was answering her questions because no one else would and she is 16 she needs to know lol

Sincerely feel no matter who or where you are at financially, giving a little off the top to something that is not selfish, or self sustaining, but that is supportive of others will cause your finances to fall in line, ... The tithing concept, I don't think it has to be a church just something you have faith in that is helpful to others and that you can feel confident giving to. I swear it does something psychological that makes you better with your money.

When I'm overly stressed I find I buy more snack food and treats, eat out more, I give up being so strict on my money because it's work to keep track of it when im so stressed I can't think straight or care for myself.

Definitely the more stressed I am about money, the more likely I am to binge spend and the more stressed I am about time limits, the more likely I am to be late. Dho! What’s up with that?

I grew up being bribed to love my mother so I have a f----- up relationship with money. I like to see the numbers rise on my bank statement superficially but once it's connected to $$$ it feels so uncomfortable like bugs are crawling all over my skin and I have this instant visceral urge to get rid of all of it, how do I get over that!

My issue is the complete opposite, I hardly ever buy myself anything. I don't know what I want or what I like. I'm used to never getting what I want when I was younger, then started only getting my own money in my 20's. I don't think I've established my sense of self. Does anyone else have any issues with self discovery?

I'm the exact opposite. I have no money but I also spend no money. I dont want anything out of anything, as long as I have food in my belly and an internet connection, I am at peace in my Zen. How does one like me become encouraged to profit?

#KatiFAQ How to deal with feeling lonely and being unable to make friends? I am 23, work full time and the place where I am supposed to socialize is work but that just does 't feel right for me, I don't feel like I click with anyone there. Also the area where I live is what I can describe as 'rough' , I don't really go out on weekends so it's difficult socializing. Please help!
