One thing you have to consider when critiquing the books is that Riordan wrote The Lightning Theif as a bedtime story, to help teach Greek mythology to his son who had dyslexia and ADHD. He was never considering becomjng a novelist until his friend read the story and recommended publication. So you have to excuse a lot of the silliness that you find in the books. And besides, I find a lot of it funny and entertaining.

What's funny is that if they wanted to make a new Harry Potter then how could they fail to notice the ages Harry Potter fans were? They were kids and were drawn by the MC being a kid and growing up alongside him. Aging them up like they did just automatically removed drawing in the same kind of audience from the get go. Just that fact alone is what gives the Disney+ show a much higher chance of success.
@DarkOverlord96
@DarkOverlord96 Жыл бұрын
It is pretty funny in hindsight how you had all these adaptations of book series aimed at a younger audience made in order to cash-in with the success of Harry Potter and most of them clearly wanted to make a whole series out of it but mixed to poor criticial and financial success put the kibosh on that... and then you have The Spiderwick Chronicles which instead opted to adapt the whole 5-book series into one movie just to make sure they could make one movie and nothing more just in case it wasn't a success.

I didn't read Percy Jackson or watch the movies, but the set-up has potential and I'd love it if fans could get worthwhile adaptations. And I'm assuming a lot of questionable low-quality elements are due to the uncertainty of this franchise taking off as a movie series, and would improve with each sequel. Maybe the new series will be an improvement and include the missing set pieces. I hope it is, because fans deserve it. But I don't think Hollywood is in proper shape to do that for anything. Not until they prioritize the writing, acting, and direction over fishing for ESG points, and that's more of an issue that's studio-by-studio because some are so much worse than others.

Read the first series in school from like 12-16 and then the Heroes of Olympus at 18 and during my bachelor the Trials of Apollo, Magnus Chase and Kane Chronicles. There is so much love to those 3 mythologies and an author who actually fleshes Out a decent Nummer of side characters to really built an immersive universe. These movies truly managed to not get anything right about what made These books fun and coherent. It is actually impressive to fail this universally xD

After reading the first book, I just cannot get over the fact that they decided to merge Annabeth and Clarisse of all characters in the first movie. She basically just acts like Clarisse and takes her role for the first 1/3 of the movie, then shifts to Annabeth for the last 2/3 but way less likeable. It only gets worse in Sea of Monsters when they actually introduce Clarisse who is, again, nothing like her book counterpart.

Honestly, I don’t mind the pop culture references. Sure, they date the books, and someone who first reads them 10 years later may not get them, but teenagers do use them when they talk, quite a bit even (memes certainly helped with that, and let’s be honest, in ten years, who’s gonna get memes about Will Smith’s slapping performance at the Oscars or Nickelback jokes?). It helps to make them feel a bit more like their age, even if it may not be reflective of a teenager of today.

I was excited thinking its going to be faithful, then they revealed the casting which is clearly not faithful. For instance look at Clarisse's actor she's 5'5 when Clarisse is supposed to be a big, muscular girl who is scary. Like surely there were other actors who were over 5'5. Or Annabeth who is clearly a blonde, descended from Swedish kings and her having blonde hair was an insecurity later on. She also helped subvert the dumb blonde trope. I know they can't get perfect actors such as Daniel Radcliffe not having green eyes but they at least tried to make him book accurate with contact lenses but he was allergic. None of these actors are even trying to remotely look like the books, they could have dyed Percy's actors hair or at least put a realistic wig on.

This was the first movie I genuinely hated as a kid. I watched The Lightning Thief and was thoroughly disappointed, but I was willing to give the series a second chance. "Maybe they would fix it," I thought. I walked out of that theater with my mom and my bros, Mom asked if I liked the movie, and 11-year-old me said "No. That was terrible."

First time watching tge 1st movie felt like i was foolled and someone switched "the tape" in the cinema and i was watching some cheap fan video, not an actuall movie from a poster that hanged over the theater's entrance. It felt like it was a joke or something, like it was a fever dream of me sitting in a cinema. I thought that no way a real Percy movie can be THAT.

I think a visual adaptation of Percy Jackson would work better if they got people like, say, Michael Dante DiMartino and/or Bryan Konietzko. In other words, it should have been animated. It would have let the kids be kids, Clarice be strong, and the action be believable.

They are definitely terrible only good things in these movies were Alexandria deddario and Logan Lerman and unfortunately even they couldn’t save these movies from being so terrible

They shouldn't have been cast in the first place. I love how everyone loses their minds about raceswapping or gender swapping characters but these characters are 12 years old in the books and they cast wrong from the start with teenagers and young adults

I started with the movie and decided to read the books after and was horrified by all the changes. I refused to watch sea of monsters and will never watch Percy Jackson movie again.

I'm disappointed they didnt include Dionysus in the movies too. He was a funny character, anyone who's read the books will tell you that. The god of wine who is forbidden from drinking wine because he got way too drunk, and is now only allowed to drink Diet Coke, which he is very unhappy about? Absolutely hilarious premise for a character

Listen to ‘The tree on the hill’ from The Lightning Thief, The Percy Jackson Musical - you’ll learn more about Thalia and Grover than you will in the movie Actually, listen to the album - if you like Peter Johnson, you’ll get a kick out of it (and a bootleg of the off broadway performance on KZbin)

there’s a large amount of people that like & defend these movies, it’s insanity. the percy jackson movies are quite literally the worst adaptations of all time, for reference it would be like if in the first harry potter movie snape was actually the villain & in the 2nd movie they killed voldemort, & even just from a movie standpoint they’re terrible. bad writing all around

The second one, I don't mind people trashing because I was as confused as you. But the first one is good. Its funny that in order for a product based on a book it has to be 1-1 just on screen. When I'll just point you to Invincible, that is actively changing what happened in the comics.
@lukeamoakoh5333
@lukeamoakoh5333 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you that an on-screen adaptation doesn't have to be 1:1 to be a good product. But while TV Invincible does have differences from the source material, the changes are meant to improve upon the story and the show is still very faithful to the comic. The Lightning Thief movie leaves out so much and there are so many changes that the plot is effectively made worse. It just comes across as Fox not actually respecting the source material when they actively didn't listen to the suggestions that Rick Riordan made for the script to be better.
