Many of us assume that the risk of falling is an inevitable part of growing older. Carole Blueweiss, a doctor of physical therapy, explains why aging and frailty are not synonymous. She challenges us all to work on our balance now, so the last years of our lives don't have to be the worst - they may even be the best. Dr. Carole Blueweiss is redefining aging by challenging some of its traditional views. With over 25 years of experience in Physical Therapy and as a certified geriatric specialist, she believes there are simple lifestyle choices that anyone can make, which have a strong impact on aging. Carole embraces holistic methods that focus on mind-body interconnection and the importance of awareness to one’s movement to combat the common misconception that aging leads to frailty. Through storytelling on her podcast, Wisdom Shared, Carole explores themes with her guests about having ‘ability’ versus ‘dis-ability.’ While aging may predispose us to lose some abilities, we have more control over this progression than we realize. Carole envisions a world where age does not limit resilience and where the last decade of life can be the most fun. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Stopped a daily aspirin regiment to get eye lid surgery and had a mini stroke that wiped out my balance and generated bouts of debilitating anxiety attacks. Then had a Cerebralar Infarction that amplified my balance issues. Some days are better than others. I’m renovating a large overgrown tropical yard. Cutting down trees and digging out roots by hand. Take my energetic dog on long walks. Work shirtless, walk barefoot. Can’t stand on one foot well but getting better. Still a long way to go but it’s working. I’ll be 100 in 23 years so plenty of time to get fit and healthy by then. Don’t give up.

Vital advice! I am 65. I walk, run, cycle, ice skate, body weight calisthenics, and weight train. But…about 4 times a week I do barefoot alternating 1 leg balances for 10 minutes. I started off with 15 seconds each side with a rest. Now I am up to 1 minute per side. Balance! Live long.

@@jmsl_910 In this talk it says if you need to sit , by all means, sit. its just that many people sit when it's not necessary. So no judgement for those who need to sit. That is a smart decision. The talk was, only meant to be a call to know yourself, and do what is right for you. And if you can, challenge yourself any way that is possible for you. that is safe- not judgement, just encouragement.

Almost 71 and still put on my socks standing. I walk my dogs daily, take classes in yoga and strength training weekly, clean my house and garden weekly. I’m stronger than I was 30 years ago, but do notice some decline in balance. I have fallen numerous times since retiring over 10 years ago, but it’s because I wasn’t paying attention to something in my surroundings that I then tripped over (like a dog or a stump). I’ve since become much more alert to my surroundings and have avoided falling for a few years now.

@@jaydub308 I would like to suggest a name brand, Aventon. That’s what I lucked into. I highly recommend buying from a dealer. You get to see them in person, they assemble it for you. You get 2 free adjustments. New bikes need them. They offer a wide variety of models for street commutes and recreation or rugged ones for off road. They have both cadence and torque models. They fitted me perfectly into a model perfect for my intentions. They are pretty heavy so transporting to a shop in a sedan would be a challenge. My mid size SUV is perfect. A bike rack suitable for transport is expensive. Well designed bikes will normally give you 30 to 40 miles of range which realistically is overkill for any e-bike. Don’t fall into thinking you need more than that unless you know you will be doing long rides. You will probably average around 15 miles per hour on streets. My suburb has a lot of bike lanes which really helps with safety. I plan my routes using them. That might make for a longer, yet safer ride

Here's a good exercise for balance: Get an exercise pad (sometimes called a yoga pad). You want one about 2" thick. Stand on that with one foot, unaided if possible, for a full minute each day. You'll have to work up to that. Use a wall to help if needed, but work towards not needing that. Work towards standing on one leg with no helps for a full minute or longer. Do that every day, or even a couple of times a day. Do it in good walking shoes, AND do it barefoot. Now start doing it with your eyes closed. 👌 If you can walk barefoot on a beach (soft sand), do that, too!

I strengthen my balance in two ways. One, walk and run on trails. It forces you to travel on uneven ground, strengthening your ankles and sense of balance. Two, while brushing my teeth I either stand on the front of my feet only(tippy toes), which improves fore and aft balance, and strengthens my toes. Or, I stand only on one foot, which improves sideways balance. Since I use an electric tooth brush it gives me a timer of two minutes each exercise. I do this twice a day while brushing which makes it an automatic habit.

I am 68 and started using a rebounder. Started slowly and soon my calf muscles were strong again. Didn’t try an actual jump until I built up the leg muscles. I stay near objects that will help in case I wobble. I get off and on the trampoline slowly, because that has seemed like the most possible risk of hurting myself. This routine has helped me more than walking or biking ever did. Also helps with circulation and of course, balance.

At first I had to crawl to the wall to help myself get up after floor work and I could hold a plank all of four seconds at best. Years later I am still a happy Kick Boxer and I stand right up from the floor. Holding a plank is easy. I’ve always been the oldest in the room but I get along well with everyone and they are not the least disturbed by my age. Gyms are friendly encouraging places. Just do it.

As a 64yo man. I try to push my physicality everyday. I lift weights, I work on balance, standing on a bosu ball, one leg at a time. I started rock climbing at age 59. I have a big fear of heights. But with exposure, I am decreasing that fear. I hike up steep mountain trails 3-5 times a week. I refuse to get old as I age. Many of my physical ailments have been reversed because I refuse to get old.

I believe the outside propaganda and Media keeping us entrapped, as well as much incorrect and deceiving information throughout educational fields, practically 24/7, have made the majority of people believe we should feel old, definitely, after 60 years of age. Therefore it's empowering to see that more and more of us won't give up, and are, on the contrary, a positive example to the younger ones... ... that the average death rate in our 70' s isn't to be taken into account at all. We might have aches and pains, looks change too, yet the Spirit within is stronger, and we can become much healthier with better understanding of life in general, at any age... ... and consequent application of what works and what doesn't in Spiritual practices, eating habits, thought and action ways. Someone in Science, at one point, indicated that a person dies when they give up, not because of their age and disease. You won't die when and if you want to live in normal circumstances. Changes in lifestyle, including nutrition and exercise, with positive thinking, for example are keys... ... together with self love, compassion and universal love. At 72 doing yoga, meditation, a lot of research and plenty of walking...when in Europe between 6-20 km downhill in beautiful countryside... I feel more at peace with nature and its gifts then in the company of too many serious individuals who forget that each day needs its own tlc, as we are programmed for negativity and obeying the system, instead of listening to our inner voice and own bodies. In my case, as a woman now lifting her 65 km on bars..which I couldn't do since my early teens... ...as well as being a nerd with a passion for knowledge .. ...and creating, prolifically, a lot of diversified artistic creations.. I moreover found that the above ways all contribute to wanting to live, no matter what... ...and I am also continuously hoping that people over 60, nowadays, can become a stronger and stronger example to others, ...so that we can continue living well into our 100's and beyond and as many researchers, doctors, neurologists and other scientists..the like of Dr Sinclair...are now showing us... provided we want to, of course!!!😅 Let's keep up our great passion for life, by engaging in love and respect for the self and disseminating pro-life ways of being and well thought out intentions, that is...by example and as stated... ... and also, of course, via the sharing of knowledge and of our life experiences thus far. Namaste! Thank you for the content in all respects, transitioning to a new and better world has its own gestation issues, as we are globally seeing, yet it's all worth it with the knowledge that our spirit in body, and not the other way round, always has the opportunity to choose the Light over the dark. It takes practice like all else and it's intriguing!!!

`So, I've always had bad ears and therefore as I got older I had some balance issues during allergy season. About 15 years ago my dentist and I gave up on one of my upper rear molars. Two crowns had been enough. Six or seven years ago I had trouble with my balance and because of other orthopedic mobility problems if I do start to fall I can't always stop it. While playing with my cousins, do you remember when - can you still touch the end of your nose with your tongue?, I realized I couldn't touch my nose. I realized that my mild overbite had changed to a complete overbite. I also clench my teeth during the day (driving, computer, other people). I started moving my lower jaw around until it could rest back where it used to land. I also started telling myself not to clench my teeth. Balance problems are mostly gone. If there is a big allergen going around I do need to take my nasal inhaler to get rid of minor ear issues. I completely disagree about the socks. Put your socks on sitting down but keep up the ability to balance.

You're so right! Painful knees were my wake-up call. All those years of health and vitality I expect to live can only happen if I double down for it right now. I can’t coast there. We all know that but my actions were prioritizing other things. My health would have its day again… someday. Now the gym, the pool, and the stationary bike have become close personal friends of mine. Because consequences are real… either way. We choose the future today.

There was a commercial on the radio several years ago that said something on the order of "for every pound overweight you are is like 4 pounds on your knees". 10lbs overweight means 40 lbs on your knees and so on. Before my mom passed away I lost 35 lbs. Now that she is gone I've gain 32 lbs back. So here I am trying to lose it all over again. I used to have a stationary bike years ago. I enjoyed it but it wore out, it was a used one to start out with. For now I walk, especially in place in the early mornings watching travel videos of small towns in Italy or walking in Hawaii. It's hard not to eat what tastes good and not to snack. I need to do better.

Yes I battle balance but it became an issue after a right side stroke. I can put on my pants standing but my right leg will not raise. For 5 years I’ve been building up my right leg but it doesn’t seem to get the signal. I did have two falls the first year but the last four have uneventful. However, every day I get dressed is an exercise and getting into the shower the same.

Sounds like you are making progress. Putting on socks was merely an example to inspire people to consider movement and safety. Everyone is different. Having someone to train with to work on balance may be helpful but safety is first.

I am 50+ and always put my socks on standing, without even thinking about it. I remember, once my mother watching this asked me how am I able to put my socks on standing without any support. I just said that I always do it this way, wandering why is she asking. I thought it is about the back and spine that is weak and hurts. Thank you for that film because now I understand it can be the poor balance issue.

Very good video, and simplistic effective advice. I agree that most of the exercises that we are encouraged to do do not address balance. Except, I think, yoga which I do once per week. Many of the poses, such as warrior, tree etc are good exercises for balance.

The whole point is that people have to take responsibility and know their limits. I give people credit that if they need to lean or sit, they will do that and it says so in the talk. Part of the challenge with balance training, adn talking about it, is that everyone on this planet is different with different needs and while putting on socks needs to be in a safe situation, whether that is sitting standing with a chair next to us, we need to challenge ourselves if we are to improve- so it s a fine balance to practice balance. We must know our limitations and use common sense, If help is needed, then PTs are a phone call away. No one is saying to risk falling in order put on socks.

Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise. Ebikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. Be healthier and happier. Ride a bicycle regularly.
