There is definitely horse leather! Mu grandmother had a horse leather motorcycle jacket with the fringe and everything, and holy shit it was heavy. They tried to give it to me when i was young, but i was freaked out because i was obsessed with horses at the time and was adamant that i would not wear it. Now im 36 and have regrets, lol. But thanks! Now i must get leather paints to add to my obscene stock of art materials...😅

Hi KK! Glad it's just two K's. You can make things out of pig leather - that's why a football Iis also called the pigskin. Gloves can also be made of deer or goat leather. My sister once had a wallet made of eel skin. (Ugh!)

KK, my dear friend whose name I always use. As much as I love to hear your stories regarding leather and ammonia and sisters, I really value when you speak about your art and process. I had often wondered about you sketching in a design before painting right over it, but this video was enlightening in that regard. I'd love to hear more!

I also paint leather sometimes, and I have recently discovered that ink stains leather so well! I have not tried a very wide range of colors, but I have used gold black and a gunmetal color and all three have worked so amazingly!They don’t wash off, and they don’t rub as far as I can tell (I have tested it on a small scale) my latest project is a pair of cowboy boots, I will let you know how they fare. Or maybe I could make it into a video 🤔. Idk… the boots are not my shoe size so I don’t know how I would test them, but🤷🏼♀️ I could probably find someone to wear them for a day, maybe… we shall see😅.

Chicken leather isn't a thing because birds have extremely thin skin. It's way too delicate and just not worth the effort, unless you're mainly trying to preserve the pretty feathers.

@Kyotopearl3 ай бұрын
Cow leather is the most common cause besides there’s a HUGE abundance of it cause we eat it so it’s cheaper for the manufacturer (even though they don’t pass off the savings to us 🫤) and the thickness is ideal for what we usually use it for

Hey KK, my name is Katerina but I go by Kat because whenever I introduce my self to anyone they immediately say “nice to meet you Katrina”. Any way I love when your shorts pop up while I’m doom scrolling. I had found myself wondering what paints you use so I went the extra mile and came to your videos. Thanks for explaining your painting methods! I really enjoy your style and how you’ve chosen to express it. I have some theories as to why cow hide is more widely used than pig and I believe sheep/lamb is even more popular still. One being that cow hide is more weather resistant, stronger and they are also a much larger animal, more widely raised throughout the world. Sheep and lamb are popular because again, they are widely raised and the oldest domesticated live stock. Sheep/lamb is soft, yet very resilient as well as water resistant with proper care. Pig leather has many uses and benefits but my theory as to why it’s not more widely used is actually religious. Judaism, Islam, and some Christian denominations are against the consumption of pork and therefore and use of the animals hide would also be prohibited. Ironically though, many early Copy’s of the Bible were bound in pig leather, so… do with that what you will 😅🤷🏽♀️

Okay, 1. Thank you, so much for this video. Those gloves are awesome, plus this is the most complete and easiest to understand how-to paint leather video I've seen.🙏🏻 2. I'm new to your channel. You said your sister couldn't pronounce your name. So may i ask what KK stands for? 3. I live in a town famous for chicken production. Every thursday growing up was known as "dogfood day" because that's what the chicken byproducts were used for. I lived a few blocks from the processing plant, and every thursday, it smelled like french fries. I knew it came from the processing plant, but was afraid to know why. You explaining the tanning process answers a 20yr old question. Thank you for this video, on so many levels.😆🙏🏻🙌🏻💜

@positronixartandlife45455 ай бұрын
I have a couple of Traveler's Notebooks and a (homemade) carry bag for them and I've been debating about getting some leather paint and customising them or, failing that, using the remaining leather I have and making something I can paint. Good to see some ideas and inspiration here, KK :D As to why pigs aren't used for leather, I dunno. Too close to human skin, too difficult to work with? Small animals aren't used because ideally you want large, immaculate pieces to work from (also hence why bulls are used instead of cows bc pregnancy can leave things like stretchmarks on the skin) rather than lots of small pieces that would need to be stitched together and look not great on a finished piece

I think pig lether is ether too thin and delicate or it’s just too tasty as craklings to become lether. That being sead I have herd of it happening for binding books because it gets checked to make sure it’s not people.
