What kit do you need? A basic bolt on with your existing cam or a complete kit with cam and supporting parts?
@Smokedilla4 жыл бұрын
First off, great video. GixxerGoo, you always break it down for the masses. Bravo! I'm conflicted when it comes to mods like this. I think people need to think about cost, pound-for-pound value, and timing. Big bore kits are expensive, and in my view, you need to go for the kit with the most value. In my view, this has always been Fuel Moto. When you factor in timing (i.e. putting in a kit in the infancy of a motor) then S&S is the way to go given the camchest upgrades. Here's the challenge: where does it end? If you do one of these kits, you are certainly going to have replace your clutch and compensator. Many of these kits will also need head porting and perhaps even a bigger throttle body. My point is that no one should be looking at these kits as a final solution. The hidden costs of buying are significant. I've chatted with my wrench about these kits from time to time, and his answer is always the same: cams and a free-flowing exhaust are the most cost-effective way to go. "Spice" things up later down the road (after some big miles on the bike) with an aftermarket big bore kit. When I asked my wrench what drives the sales of these kits if camchest upgrades are all you need. He said money/greed and ego. Food for thought...
@GixxerFoo4 жыл бұрын
Oh he's very correct about the big bore kits, the cams will net you in the high 90's for horsepower. Very cost effective option. Big bore kits are great but you really do need ported heads to take full advantage of the setup. There are some decently priced clutch options and compensator eliminators are a great solution. But honestly it just keeps going, it's best to be all in if you're going to do it. I really appreciate you watching, the support means a lot to us on the channel.

@@qmac10 no, I didn’t touch it. The engine lasted with the S&S kit for 42(ish)k miles. It was time for a big over hauling, so I did the right thing, I squeezed a 131cu in that bike. If course with any upgrade as it's already been mentioned adding more power is going to put more stress on whatever you don't upgrade for that reason I feel it's best to have everything checked out before and if you have to spend a little extra money it's best to take care of it while getting your bike upgraded and not when you going down the road somewhere.

I get the attraction to drop on kits but I still say discussing modifications to your own cylinders, heads, and your riding style with a well-known company with a great reputation is the best way to go. They will make sure you get what you need versus what you think you need. So many riders make costly mistakes with mismatched builds and spend the same dollar twice or worse three times before they achieve their goal.

Hammer Performance has some really cost effective options for boring your existing cylinders out. You lose your overbore later on since they take them to the max, but twin cam cylinders can be bought relatively cheap. Great video and thank you ! - I've got a 2014 SG with a fairly stock 103. I got rid of the stock headers and went with Fullsac & S&S intake then tuned it with a power commander because it was still under an extended warranty . . . then, while still under warranty I screwed up and spent the money on SE585 cams, SE lifters and adjustable pushrods and as a result I lost a ton of low to mid range power and TQ. So I'm looking to increase my compression and that's how I found my way here... I know I need to check my runout, I don't know about my cam plate or oil cooler and I think I'll be getting rid of the power commander and going with a powervision flash. There seems to be a conflict between tuning shops of keeping the 02 sensors - Here's the options I've heard: Powercommander - Eliminate 02 sensors Powervision Flash - Swap out narrow-band 02 sensors for wide-band only for the dyno/mapping and then once the readings are done, turn off 02 sensors in the map and put back the narrow-band sensors since they're not part of the equation anymore and running the 02 sensors risks running too lean and burning it up. Powervision Flash - Using the wide-band sensors so the ECM can do it's thing and improve fuel economy. I realize this subject of tuning is a different rabbit hole . . .
@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
Just leave your 02 sensors and get it flashed and tuned with the Power Vision with a map that matches your current setup. You could just get a ThunderMax with wide band 02 sensors and be done with it.

Love the comparison and explainations. However there are some very overlooked improvements needed to run this much HP. Nobody ever thinks about the compensator, primary chain, and the primary chain tensioner. Go ahead and add all that power and still leave weak points untouched... Problem is once you upgrade you are always chasing the next thing. Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend these upgrades, but there are other things to consider as well.

It's a good idea to have it done if you can. Timken conversion and have the crank worked over and trued up. Not totally necessary though, you will for sure want to check your run out on the pinion just to see what shape it's in. But if you're just cruising and making a a quick hit on the power you'll be alright. I wouldn't be going to the strip and hammering on it with the stock crank.

If you did the s+s kit. Which would be best for performance heads? Buy s+s heads or have yours ported? Seems 110 jugs and pistons should all be close performance wise. Just wondering were zippers are getting the bigger numbers.
@GixxerFoo4 жыл бұрын
You can always have your heads ported on your own, but when it comes to buying a kit I personally prefer to have the company match it to their kit. Zippers gets a lot of power from their cams, cams make a huge difference in the power delivery.

Looking at a new bike take off CVO 110 kit with jugs, pistons, rings, 255 cams, lifters, pushrods, 110 clutch spring and the larger throttle body. No heads. Will these slot straight into a stock 96" Softail without case boring? Obviously a good tune and a bit of porting on the stock 96 heads to flow a bit better. This will take it from Stage 1 to Stage 3 1/2.

The 96 will accept the 110 cylinders without case boring. Someone put a 117 big bore kit on the CVO?
@parkeslife43233 жыл бұрын
GixxerFoo yes. 117 fitted at dealership before taking delivery.
@1965l883 жыл бұрын
@@parkeslife4323 The CVO 110" cylinders off that bike will NOT work on a 96". the spigots on the CVO 110" cylinders are the same thickness as the 117" spigots are and both are thicker than the 96"/103" spigots. The reason the aftermarket 110" kits work on the 96"/103" cases is because the liners are made of tougher material and are machined thinner at the spigots to match the cases.
@parkeslife43233 жыл бұрын
@@1965l88 thanks friend. I thought the same. And after carefully listening to how the factory 110 is made (by machining out the casings of the 96/103 to accept the increased spigot size) came to the same conclusion. So I didn't purchase the CVO 110 parts to for to my 96. Pity it wouldn't work as it was only about $1,000 for as new parts.
@ccollins99814 жыл бұрын
You might want gear-driven cams but if your twin cam is like most your crankshaft end play is more than the required 3 thousandths. Harley has capitulated on this and said that 12 thoussndths is ok... But in the end the entire cam plate would get trashed along with the gears. My 96 came alive so much after just a camshaft oil pump and cam plate that I lost interest in a big bore kit.
@GixxerFoo4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point, converting to a gear drive is likely only going to happen on a crank up rebuild. But some do get lucky and find their crank within spec, doesn't happen often though.

Is this a factory 103 or a conversion? If it's a factory Harley 103 it should have automatic compression releases in the heads. If you're going back with the stock heads and they have the compression releases it won't be an issue. But definitely with high compression pistons you'll want some compression releases.

A Sportster motor is going to make more horsepower than torque, they are higher revving engines and they don't have the larger displacement of the big twin to make the torque.

it's simple. A piston engine is basically an air pump. So if you get it to pump more air, it will produce more power.

YEs. Those will be sufficient. You may even want to go bigger on the cams since this kit is high compression. Whereas you dont NEED to upgrade the TB and injectors, it's never a bad idea not to. Make sure you have a good tuner or have someone who can tune it well after you're all done.
@gregrogers39983 жыл бұрын

@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
The SE259E is Harley's biggest street cam, so he would of had to change the valve springs in the bike at a minimum. That cam will work with the stock compression but the lower compression on the 110 stock really holds it back.

FuelMoto is an excellent kit, it's important to keep your compression in the ratio your cam is designed for so you're not having to buy a new cam. A Wood Cam and a big bore kit with lower compression will make some excellent power in the low and mid.
