Personally, I always liked "Love You To" and "Honey Pie." The reason I think that a lot of people don't like those songs is because they want the Beatles' music to remain within the definition of rock n roll and pop. Some people automatically reject songs like that because they don't sound "right." Many think that Indian music is just weird and foreign-sounding, and many resist anything that sounds old-fashioned, so Love You To is "foreign" and Honey Pie is "granny music," not for cool people. About "Little Child," I think the phrase sounds kind of condescending and the way we hear those two words being repeatedly sung staccato is kind of irritating. I do like the harmonica solo, so I still think of it as a good song. I don't consider "Revolution 9" a song, but rather an interesting sound collage.

"When I Get Home" shouldn't be anywhere near this list - let alone #14. Great early Lennon rocker, and one of their most harmonically innovative tracks from that period.

I was a little surprised that covers were integrated into the final list when they were considered separately in your original video (and within the survey). If I was picking the worst songs with covers included, my responses would have been significantly different. Personally, I don’t feel covers qualify as Beatles “songs,” but are instead Beatles recordings… so I liked that you originally kept them separate.

But come up with your own list of your 10 worst Beatles Songs, and they are going to be worse than any number of songs in the Top 100 when I looked a few days ago. @@ricardo_miguel13 Ballad of John & Yoko isn't one of the Beatles worst songs. It was silly to be at #20 via Matt's fans, but what are you going to do. My point: set aside the silly list that Matt's fans came up with. Come up with your own. I think you would agree that your Worst 10 are all worse than that Billie English song that I linked to, which is a perfectly decent song. I could come up with my Worst 10. I would think they are all worse than that Billie song. I'm not sure how deep into the Beatles songbook we'd have to go where we finally hit a filler song that we think is at that same level. Beats me... not a game I want to play. My game: to get past the myopia of the original poster that the Beatles Worst is ALL better than anything in the Top 100. That's just stupid talk. 🙂

What saves the "White Album" are the good tracks, which are among the Beatles very best. It reminds me of how the Eagles' "Hotel California" album is so popular. The album cut and a couple of other tracks are among their very best work. But half of the album is just mediocre. Yet it is one of the best-selling albums of all-time.

I"m not sure I totally agree with that. There is something about the way the 'white album' flows that makes it work as a single piece of art. Yes, on their own there are amazing tracks and some weaker tracks, but those weaker songs work when you go cover to cover.

If you drop off the ten White Album songs voted for, then you end up with roughly a 60-minute album. While that is still a little long for a single album, it is starting to approach the single album stage. One could easily lose Revolution 1, as that’s arguably inferior to the version released on the Hey Jude single. That puts you within a stone’s throw of a single disc.

Among our favorite Beatles fan games is to rate their songs. I had the Let it Be single, so the B-side You Know My Name got played once. As a package, that 45 sucks. Whereas Hello Goodbye had I Am The Walrus as the B-side? Excellent! So, as Matt states, album context often comes into it. The bottom line is fan games with Beatle songs are a delight. It's because The Beatles (White Album) is the least 'Beatles-like' (Beatleist) album (somewhat paradoxically given it's title). It's an album of individually created songs whereas the more collaborative nature of earlier and later albums is very Beatleist. Also,The White Album was the very antithesis of psychedelic, English artifice and conceptuality, it being a mixed bag collection of individually penned songs reflecting The Beatles own individuality and widening interests and their sense of growing disillusionment with their collective responsibilities to each other, their fans and the counter-culture. Of course, it's all down to personal opinion in the end. For example, I interviewed Bob Wooler in his own home over an extended period, and because he was from a pre-Beatles generation that liked tin-pan alley songs etc. he actually wrote a song WITH George Martin. He disliked I am the walrus and wasn't even a great fan of Paul's The long and winding road. He absolutely loved She loves you because he said it did what every pop song should do, announce itself suddenly , bounce along pacily and excitingly then finish quickly or as he put it 'eff off! (And Bob was usually very erudite with his choice of language and parsimonious with his cursing). Lol.

Matt, I'll never understand how "Oh Darling" & "The Ballad Of John and Yoko" show up on the worst songs list, both among my favorites. However, I have a few theories. "Oh Darling." Fans have heard that John thought he could do a better job on singing it, and it would have been great, it's too bad he and Paul didn't trade off verses and sing it together, the song is great, if they had done it together, beloved classic. The Ballad Of John and Yoko is one of the all-time great rockers and the only reason to me it doesn't get it's due is because George and Ringo aren't on it. Also, people still hate Yoko, and...the mention of Christ in the lyrics is still a trigger for some with beliefs that find it offensive. Finally you have "Little Child." always loved it, fun catchy early Beatles, what's not to like? Well I'm just guessing but it seems like the problem has to do with the lyrics, specifically the "Child" part, once again triggers those who interpret it as inappropriate. Take out the Child part and change it to "You're The One" and keep the rest of the lyrics the same, beloved classic. And for good measure, take the cowbell out of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" and it's a Lennon classic on par with "Twist and Shout," which is how I feel about it, even with the cowbell. Also, maybe tone down the repetitive guitar lick, it begins to grate after awhile.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the top 30 "worst" list skews heavily toward the late period. I think it was a function of a lack of quality control as the Beatles were trying to get out of their record deal, a function of their growing independence away from George Martin, and let's be honest moving away from from the softer drugs to harder ones. It was also during this period where album cuts are clearly solo pieces which deviate what quintessential "Beatleness." Somewhere in the Hunter Davies" 1968 authorized biography, he made an observation that even then Beatle fandom was split among Lennon and McCartney partisans. List like this allow for Lennon's late avant gardism and McCartney's fruity granny music to be punished but fans of the other composer. Lastly, the top 40 and bottom 30 songs are relatively easy to identify, but the middle 140 songs are of such uniform high quality and yet sound so varied.

Part of the problem with the White Album is that The Beatles released a double album in order to fulfil their contractual obligation of a certain number of albums that needed to be released in order for them to meet their obligations to Parlophone and EMI. The other thing that is noteworthy about the White Album is how dark it is. Granted, Magical Mystery Tour is a weird mixed bag of songs, but it ends on the song All You Need Is Love, which was recorded in the spirit of the Summer of Love in 1967. And of course Sgt. Pepper is very much in keeping with the psychedelic / love message of 1967. But the White Album, as a departure, is really dark. Songs like Happiness Is a Warm Gun or Piggies would have no place on Revolver, Sgt Pepper, or Magical Mystery Tour. But I think that the White Album somewhat reflects the anger of 1968, at least in the US. With political assassinations, the escalation of the Vietnam war, and the birth of the word, “pig” in reference to the government and law enforcement, for many young people, the idealism of 1967 had been transformed into an anger against those in positions of political power. And perhaps the White Album reflects the shift away from utopian ideals to an active resentment of government and proponents of international conflict as a means of stemming the expansion of “international Communism”. So while The Beatles were British, the White Album nevertheless seems to reference a growing anger that was present, among young people, and the transformation of their idealism into anger.

And Yesterday, Something, Paperback Writer, Rain, She's A Woman, Come Together, Back In The USSR, I Am The Walrus, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Nowhere Man, Long Tall Sally, Money, Twist And Shout, I'm Down, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away? Yes, so if you look at my data, the songs that garnered 1-3 votes are quite negligible. All those that you list had very small vote counts. I can understand why people dislike Hey Jude but I've argued (in my video on the Top 10 Best Beatles Songs) that it is their sheer balls to have a song go that long and be that repetitive, while inviting the world to sing with them is what makes that one of the greatest songs of the decade. Others find it tedious, simplistic and monotonous. I can understand that viewpoint as well.

You're probably talking about me. I voted for several of their biggest hits as bad songs. Yesterday is a bad song to me. It's actually a catchy number one hit sounding song, but at the same time I can't stand it. I also think that Sargent Pepper is their worst album, except for one or two songs on it. And I think George Martin was right about the White album, it should've been a single album.

@@davidlanier7006 Hi David. Thank you for those insights. I have heard the opinions over the years that Yesterday is too sentimental and cloying and that Sergeant Pepper has not aged as well as some of the Beatles' other albums. I can even understand those view points to a certain extent. But Yesterday is a bad song? The composition, the performance, the arrangement, all of the above? In terms of quality does it actually rank lower than tunes such as You Like Me Too Much, Little Child, or What You're Doing? And do you consider Pepper to be worse than Beatles For Sale or any other Beatles album? I honestly don't think you're being contrary (to widely and long-held consensus) just for the sake of contrariety. The more time I spend on these discussion threads the more I realize that musical tastes truly are subjective and varied. I remember reading that John didn't like some of the commercial, bubblegum songs Paul came up with either. A little outdated and I had to weave through the countless BBC and Anthology songs to pick out ones in their studio discography. I ranked them as how I enjoy the songs as a whole. I'm not at all surprised by 'Little Child' - it's very repetitive and the lyrics really haven't aged well. If you thought a middle-aged man singing "She was just 17 / You know what I mean" in the film 'Yesterday' was cringeworthy to the contemporary ear, well, that's nothing compared to imploring a "little child" to "take a chance with me" - even if The Beatles were young adults at the time. This, I think, shows that there's more to what makes a song generally disliked than any criteria you can come up with - there's always something subjective about what we like or dislike. I've even met people who really like 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', for instance! But I was surprised that 'Run For Your Life' wasn't listed, as I find the tune irritating while the lyrics would have been obnoxious even back when it was released - and also, as with 'Good Night', it was a ridiculous choice to round off a perfectly good album. The other White Album tracks that featured high up in the survey, whereas, are tucked away inside the double-LP, and so my feeling is that you can take them or leave them - you don't have to actively dislike them (apart from 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da', of course ;) ). There are, therefore, other criteria that might have been considered: Has the track aged well? Do the lyrics make you squirm? and, Did it unduly mar the album it appeared on? I'd also add that The Beatles' later albums are more listened to these days than their earlier ones - hence the number of White Album and Abbey Road tracks on the list, even though these are two of their most highly regarded works. The 'White Album' also features a vast variety of songs, and so, not all of these are not going to be to everyone's taste - but this variety is, to me at least, what makes it such an amazing album (even though one of the tracks is 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da'). I am a bit baffled by how disliked 'Hold Me Tight' was - maybe the original recording of the track was a bit lacklustre, but it's far from being the worst song on its album, as we can see from the terrific version of it in the film 'Across the Universe'.

Although the White Album is a MASTERPIECE, it is their only legitimate double album. So, it is NOT surprising in a way that the highest percentage of the least 'liked' songs come from that record, just looking at it purely mathematically. We should think more about what a song is trying to accomplish and appreciate it (or not) on that basis. Novelty interstitials like "Dig It," "Maggie Mae," and maybe "Wild Honey Pie" exist to contribute to an album's vibe and POV. And "Revolution 9" isn't trying to be "Hey Jude." Neither is "All Together Now" or "Bungalow Bill"; my young son loves both of those! I mean, wouldn't use the same criteria to evaluate a McDonald's quarter pounder as a thick gastropub burger -- and sometimes I *want* McDonald's. I never, however, have a hankering for White Castle. The actual first Beatles album was recorded in a day, and on equipment that would embarrass someone recording at home. I'd guess that part of the Beatles growth in songwriting reflected the new possibilities of 4- and 8-track recording. And albums overtaking singles as the preferred way of hearing a group. As Beatles sales continued to grow, the band seemed to lose a sense of quality control to the point that on the White Album, the Beatles were a collection of solo artists rather than a group recording together. Some listeners are fine with this, but I purchased the White Album, put 'that' in my pipe, and smoked it with friends while listening to all four sides, and no one liked everything. And everyone disliked Revolution 9. While I can respect Lennon for trying to lead the public down a new pathit is not a 'Beatles' song and should have been placed on Two Virgins.

However, I would say that, striped from its context on The White Album, Lennon at least has the ability to evoke a haunting melody and creepy phantasmagoria. Additionally, I would rather listen to it than many other contemporaneous "avant-garde" compositions from the "vanguard," including Varese, Stockhausen, and Cage. @@popgoesthe60s52 "Past Masters" itself tends to get overlooked as part of their catalog, not part of the original 13 but without it no Beatles collection is complete.

I didn't vote for German versions because I didn't consider them to be separate songs,

I can't believe there are people in the world who don't like the chuggin' 'Hold Me Tight' with that KILLER middle 8?!??

I like that one to. It rocks but McCartney sings out of tune in several places and people knock it for that. That would fall under "Poor vocal delivery" in my criteria! I still like it!

@@DocReasonable I agree the song itself is good. The only part that's pretty iffy is Paul's warbly off-key singing, which might be the main reason for the downvoting in the survey. Paul must have been nervous AF. How George Martin let that vocal through is a mystery to me.

@@CraigCholar They probably needed another original song - I believe it was originally aborted during the sessions for their first UK LP.

I love With The Beatles a lot. Hold Me Tight and Little Child are some favorites of mine, but I know both are at or near the bottom of a lot of other people's list. No judgement. It's great that the Beatles music can be appreciated in so many different ways that someone's least favorite could be another's favorite.

The thing is... I could choose a dozen songs out of this list and it would have made a good album with a couple of hits in it 😂

I misjudged this. Your own picks were pretty much exactly what I would pick . I felt they were pretty definitive and that most people would pick the same ones. I'm truly surprised that so many songs were getting votes. I mean, this is the Beatles - they only have so many "worst" songs. Guess I should have voted. Glad so many people did.

I definitely prefer the Beatles when they were a beat group. That was the whole point of them, it's even in their name.

I have no use for Sie Liebt Dich and Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand, and the whole of Side 2 of Yellow Submarine was a rip-off. I don't mind George's explorations into Eastern forms, nor can I hate the covers of their influences, I view those album cuts as heartfelt tributes. Some of their "disliked" early songs were directly taken from their live sets in Hamburg and Liverpool, including some of the songs that Ringo covered with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, and I cannot discount the songs of their "apprenticeship".
