OK Your shift is 40% done .. so there is 60% still to go 3 hours is 60% .. which means that 1 hour is 20% and a full shift (100%) is therefore 5 hours

I don't know if you would qualify my method as "algebra" but I think it is. 60/100 times "x" = 3 I divide 3 by 60/100 and I get the answer: 5 hours.

This is how I did it - If 60% was 6 hours, then the whole shift would be 10 hours, but as 60% of the shift is half that amount, the whole shift must be 5 hours. Much simpler, but might not work so easily if the percentages weren't such round numbers.

3 hours is 60% of the shift. Let x = hours of the shift. (0.6)x = 3. 3/0.6 = 5. Five hour shift. Doesn't take a lot of brain power, but it's good to keep your head in the game.

If I worked 40% of my shift and have 3 hours left to work, I'd divide 3 by 60% ( the reciprocal of 40%), In my head (30 ÷ 6 = 5)

work shift is 40% done = 60% undone 3 hours left in shift [=seg.2] = 3hr/seg.2 [seg=>segment] 60%/seg.2 is to 3 hours/seg.2 or (60%/seg.2)÷(3hours/seg.2) =(60%/3hours)×(seg.2/seg.2) =20%/hour rate of work so = (40%/seg.1) ÷ (20%/hr) = (40%/20%) (hr/seg.1) = 2(hrs/seg.1) totaled: (2 hrs/seg.1)+(3 hrs/seg.2) = 5hrs/(seg.1+seg.2) = 5hrs/total shift

Thats what you call maths make difficult!! I solved this problem in less than 30 second [ did it MENTALLY ] while the tutor did the same maths in 16:49 mins. All you should do is use Cross multiplication Since 60% = 3 hours 100 % = X Solve for x 60*x = 100 *3 [cross multiply] then solve for x 60x =300 60×/60 =300/60 = 5 Answer = 5 hours

Greetings. The entire work shift is 5 hours. Algebraically, we shall assume that the entire work shift is X hours. Now, moving forward, if we subtract 40% of the work already completed we are told that 3 hours remain. The expression to show the sum total of hours taken to complete the job is X-40X%=3, and 100X-40X=300, 60X=300. Finally, X=300/60=5 hours.
@aryusure1943

@devon Indeed! But the way I see it is that 3 hours is 60% of the shift. So 60/100 times "x" = 3. So you divide 3 by 60/100 and you get "X" = 5. I don't like to have too many moving parts if I don't need it. ;)

If it has 40% done , then 60% is left, so if 60% is three hours that means each hour is 20%, so 40% is 2 hours and sixty percent is 3 hours so the shift is 5 hours.
