I’ve been watching a lot of the videos lately. I’ll be selling my Ford Raptor privately and have been shopping dealers for a 24 Subaru Forester Sport. Best I have found inside of PA was $3,500 discount off MSRP and one in VA this morning was $4,057 off. MSRP originally was $35,903. I’ve spoken to 6 dealers so far and have yet needed to leave the house. Never hurts to shop around and talk to try and find the best deal especially when you can haggle more in person. Keep up the great content!

Dealer added accessories are not a new thing. I remember when I was young, I bought my first new car in late 80's. The dealer added three things: tinted glass, rust proof treatment and clear car edge. The three items pushed the sale car price more than two thousand dollars above MSRP. Since there is a new year model coming in the next two weeks, there was $1,500 discount. But even with the discount, I still paid $1,000 above MSRP. But I got three items that are not Honda installed. I was young. I don't know how to talk with salesman. The salesman told me every Honda car is with these items, there is no way to take them out. For example, the rust proof process has applied to them once the cars arrived to the dealership. I really don't know how to argue with them. Years later, when I bought my second new car. I just drove around town to visit different Honda dealers. Most of them still add extra items to push sale prices higher because people like Honda cars. But eventually I found on the edge of the city, there is a Honda dealer that did not install any extra and willingly sold the car to me just three hundred dollars above the invoice. So they got my money.

It's not new, but it's recently become a substitute for market adjustment. I'm car shopping in California right now and I have been unable to find the vehicle I'm looking for (at 7 dealerships so far) without the addendum items. And they all flat out tell me they add them to all cars. I asked if I could just order one and was told no (Honda)

Ended up meeting with the GM and paid the factory accessory price for the mats and got rest of the car tinted along with the dual sun roofs for no additional charge.

I asked for otd price. They gave it to me immediately. I ran KBB on it, offered them that amount, crossed out all their add-ons, declined gap and theft add-ons, and walked out with the keys in about an hour total. One thing to note if you live in California and go out of state to buy a new car you will lose out on the benefit of the California Lemon Law. That probably won't be an issue when you buy a Toyota but if you are buying from a brand that isn't as reliable then its something to consider.

Guys, I love the video and what you're teaching. In this case, there is an issue I don't see others commenting on: You did not make a final total cost comparison between the two scenarios. In the out-of-state purchase, what is the cost of transport, and what are the total state taxes and fees to get the true cost of the second scenario? Wouldn't your tax hit be higher in the second scenario as the MSRP price is higher? You need to include transportation, as you said, to get the tax adjustment since you paid AZ tax, which was awesome to include that information. But the transport fee is a part of buying that car and needs to be considered as part of the total cost of the car. That 1st scenario may actually be cheaper once all of that is included in the second option or it may not be. I agree the AZ dealer is a better experience than the CA dealer, and I would prefer to work with them.

I bought a car a couple of days ago in Canada. Before my visit to close the deal I had emailed the salesman the list of items I wanted (dispensing with all the money grabbing add-ons). When I got to the dealership, the salesman presented me with the cost sheet and I saw that that had added a $700 5-year Tire & Rim insurance. I told them I did not need that and to remove it. The salesman then told me that he could not remove because "they needed to make a profit on the sale"!!!! WOW!! When I insisted, he said he would had to talk to the manager to see if it was possible to remove it! Haha! Talk about a BS sales trick....

Same song and dance I got when I went car shopping just over a year ago at two Toyota dealers. One didn't have any new cars and tried to sell me a used hybrid for a price close to the original. The second had several dealer add ons, including Lo-Jack ($1,000) and nitrogen ($200) in the tires. I drove across the street to an honest dealer and got a Mazda at a realistic cost.

Hey CarEdge - recently went to the dealership with your collected advice over the YT videos I have watched. Wanted to to say thank you very much because their tone and body language adjusts once you start dodging questions about financing vs leasing and the buy rate vs sell rate. Question: I am still thinking over whether to buy a car (Hyundai Tuscon), but recent experiences today have been questioning whether I am being lead on. I asked about the buy rate vs sell rate and the dealer informed me that they do not mark up any percentage as there is nothing to gain. (I think this is BS, but in your experience do you know of dealers who just provide the flat rate provided by the bank)?
@Gerisheng
@Gerisheng 8 ай бұрын
When I bought my car, I did the "get a quote" thing from the manufacturer web site and when the dealers responded, I asked one question: "Are you charging dealer markup of any kind and are you adding accessories that I can't refuse." I live in Silicon Valley and all nearby dealers had markups of $1,500 to $3,500. On a $26k car! A dealer over an hour drive away was the only one to offer the right car at MSRP with no excessive fees. A year earlier these cars were discounted, but in early 2022 MSRP was the best one could expect, by and large. Needless to say, I drove 1 1/2 hours and gave them my money and a nice trade-in, and nearby dealers lost out.

Beware: You can’t buy a new car out of state if you’re a CA resident. Out of state cars don’t have California emissions. The car has to be at least a year old to bring it in to CA. If you buy a brand new car and bring it back to CA and it doesn’t have a CA emissions sticker, the DMV will block your registration efforts. You’ll be driving it back to AZ to sell it back to the dealer.

Then threatened to fire me if I told her, I tried telling her to leave, she stayed the next week I quit and went into education. So based on what I saw, they are going through a bigger hassle to buy from another state. Arizona OTD is $31,700 this is not including the extra fees you’d have to pay transfer to California. Apart from the OTD you’d have to pay $300-$500 to get it moved to California. Then you need to add the extra California taxes $1300, add $58 for the smog and emissions. So buying in Arizona at the lowest would cost you$33,558 compared to $33,120 in Arizona. So in short Gotcha Motors will always Getcha in the end.

I've gotta also say: I've been to about 5 dealers since Friday while shopping for a car with my wife, and NONE of the dealers have been the sleazy default that you portray. Of course, I wouldn't consider buying from them if they did, & it's really easy to check on other dealers within our own state of NJ via the web. I really think that if you treat a dealer like an enemy, that's what you're going to get. If they don't respect you, just walk out. There's no need for drama.

I bought a new Beetle in 2000. It took $28,000 to get of the lot. Sold it a year and a half later for $19,000. Was the first and last car I bought from a new car dealer.

Thank God and all the glory goes to Him. Want to Thanks to you guys, my wife and I just walked out of a Volkswagen dealer with a brand new leased Avocado green Peak edition Atlas for 0 money down, 36months, 12,000 miles for $660. I’m sure we could have gotten it for less but we brought it down from $52,000 msrp to $40,000. By the way we walked out the dealer because the numbers were not right and as soon as we did the called us back in and gave us what we wanted. Ladies and Gents don’t give in, if the price is not right it’s ok to walk out. Trust me they’ll call back

Myself and my family have never paid sales tax at time of delivery. Only paid sales tax at time of registration in the state the car was registered. State dependent perhaps? Purchased in all my new cars in AR since 2005, but have registered in TX, MO, and AR.

So if you didn’t watch these videos initially and was at a dealer and they were happy to give an OTD but you had mentioned a 10% down payment what hidden agenda or whatever would be going in if the number is under MSRP but they were also reducing the price of the manufacture options? It looks like a great deal but the OTD doesn’t show my down payment but the discounts are there. How much under MSRP is a good deal?

Great deal all right, a Corolla! 25-26K car ends up north of 31-33K plus, still overpriced and not worth it

Agree. It is not a good deal just because they ripped you off a bit less. The profit in Arizona was still way more than need be.

How is it not worth it? I’m confused. The 26k you’re citing is the base model. The options on the car are all added by Toyota. Other than that, destination and doc fees are standard. There’s nothing there that the dealer is hiding. If you want to avoid those fees, you gotta buy used

Are we still not negotiating price off of MSRP anymore? Forced add-ons still seems like a bad deal, because none of those add-ons are considered down the road if you were ever to trade in the car.

3:22 funny you should say Tijuana, my truck was stolen, insurance company paid up in 7 days, 4 days later the local TV was filming a marijuana bust in the compound of the Tijuana police department and called and asked me if I’m missing a truck. I said my insurance companies is. My truck was being used my the TJ PD! Still had my plates install. A friend of mines car was stolen from the Costco parking lot and was geo located just south of Tijuana. There was no legal recourse to get it back, insurance paid but my friend kept sending alarms to the car, as long as the battery was connected he annoyed the thieves. I caught a Mexican trying to steel my jeep (same Costco parking lot) I chased him away, an unknown guy on a motorcycle went after him. The thief had accomplices that eventually picked up the thief and threatened the guy on the motorcycle so he backed off. This is just one benefit living on a Mexican border town!

Ive got the breakdown for pricing and it has the addons ( gps, tint, clear door edge guards), if I remove that from the deal would they take the tint off? Just want to make sure before going forward, i have my own gps plus I can do my own tints. Btw its a 2023 tundra sr5 crewmax with trd package

you can ask to not pay for those things or remove it but the problem is you are buying an in demand truck in a hot market and they can say no easily. The next bozo will buy it. But definitely ask them to remove it or say i'm not paying for it. They say no can do then walk.

I went to a dealership to purchase a car that is advertised at 16455. They come back with all the fees and taxes, and it was nearly 21.5k. I told them to remove all the extras, and they kept coming back. The next day I called and worked out a bit better deal over the phone. Eventually the nearly 3k of extras was only $500 I settled for that. That same day before going to the dealership to close out the deal I notice the website price dropped about $550. I told them I need that advertised priced but keep all the other costs the same. They did it. So a price they started off at nearly $22k at the end was only about 18K. The same car in carmax and carvana is nearly 23k with all fees included. The important thing is that I said I wanted to negotiate the car price and then I would figure out how I would want my payments laid out. By focusing on the price, they couldn't do the "what do you want to pay per month?" trick on me.

In Canada this doesn't work. Toyota sell for premium either get trade-in or get accessories. Example for Highlander hybrid one can expect 10k worth of accessories or warranty etc if you want the car .

Hello may I get some advice here. We are looking to buy a car soon, the Grand Highlander and the last time we bought a car was 2006. And my mom got scammed for the Toyota Corolla back then. I don't want the same thing to happen to me. The dealership sent me the PDF of the grand highlander with all the pricing. I wanna know, the Installed Packages & Accessories are from the manufacturer, should I pay for those? or are these the fees I should tell them to take off? INSTALLED PACKAGES & ACCESSORIES Door Edge Guards - $155.00 Running Boards - $799.00 Alloy Wheel Locks - Chrome - $105.00 All-Weather Floor Liner Package - $358.00 Blackout Emblem Overlays - $139.00 Roof Rack Cross Bars - $325.00 Base MSRP - $46,620.00 Port Installed Packages & Accessories - $1,881.00 Delivery Processing and Handling - $1,395.00 Total Advertised Price - $49,896.00
