Consumer product design engineer here - Die cast Zinc (what the Wand company is saying they will use for the metal component) is a fairly dense metal, and will likely have fairly thick walls. Aluminum (the sensible choice for in-game) is quite a bit lighter. Steel (the metal that appears to be canon based on the rust evident in game pip boys) is fairly dense, but can have very thin walls if the parts are produced via stamping.

The power for Portable Pis I have found have been extremely problematic. I used a 5v 3a battery pack, and it works, problem is it is bulky. Li-Ion charging boards and voltage regulators help hide the components, but they're unstable it seems and I have found that of all things, USB hubs make my pi draw too much for that, but the battery pack remains working. And CM4s fit great in a lot of places, and can be adapted with small boards ir custom circuitry for it and with the extra power the Raspi 4 in a smaller compact size. But a zero is the way to go if you can make programs from scratch that are less resource intensive
@MassiveDMG8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the real-world insights into that! There are some more barebone arduino boards out there like the SEEED Studio Xiao, but those lack the (literal) power for the fancy GUI we want on the screen, not to mention the lack of a screen driver board. I saw one of the first showings of Star Wars May 22, 1977 at the Coronet theater in San Francisco. This was three days before opening day. I won tickets from a radio station. I was 16 years old and it was the first time my mom let me take the car out at night. I still have my "May The Force Be With You" button they gave us as we went in. Oh and to me it will always simply be "Star Wars." None of this "A New Hope" nonsense.

That's awesome. Sounds like a really cool memory! I'm younger than you, so my 1st experience with Star Wars was Star Tours at Euro Disney in the 90s, getting fully physically immersed in the world and after that I watched the trilogy (not the Special Edition) taped from tv when it was on at night, without having Vader's real identity spoiled. My parents did miss recording the Tantive V scene, so 'my' Star Wars starts at Tatooine 😅. The draft script we saw at Propstore said it was (partially) called "The Adventures of Luke Starkiller: as taken from the Journal of the Whills Saga 1: Star Wars". Try putting that on merchandise!

Not a nuclear physics engineer, but here's my two Vin-cents. There's background radiation all around us, and different kinds of radiation do different things. Some of it doesn't even penetrate your skin. Depending on where in the world you are, you might get some peeps and pips from building materials. Apparently bananas cause it to beep as well. But you're right, an actual geiger counter wouldn't be so useful as a daily driver (thankfully!). There is a lot more theory behind it. The Modern Rogue channel covers a lot of ground on radiation in some of their videos, so check that out!

Haslab made a full proton pack for 400 and the trap and pke meter for 300... those are huge and built like tanks. 200 dollars isn't quite the bargain you pretend it is.
@MassiveDMG8 ай бұрын
It's not cheap, that's true. It's a premium item. And a bargain is subjective, because this could feed a whole family for a week depending on where you live. However, considering what is being put into the Pip-Boy on that scale, you have to take miniaturization into account. Small things doing a lot of stuff are expensive, especially for a niche audience and perhaps usecases. Electronics and programming-wise the Haslab Proton Pack is a bunch of buttons and lights with a speaker encased in plastic, nothing too complex. I actually had to buy a 300+ dollar lights and sound kit from GPStar to make it do what I want it to do. But that's me. Space was also no issue for the Proton Pack electronics. The Pip-Boy that you can preorder now is a much smaller footprint, and a wearable with a working screen and die-cast metal front with a lot more functionality in it. That gets expensive fast. Knowing Chris a bit, he won't skimp on the packaging either unless it's really necessary. Oftentimes the box it comes in is just as valid of a replica or prop as the toy itself (it's still a toy peeps 😅). Also, based on publicly available data: Hasbro: 8.9 Billion net worth The Wand Company: around 3-5 Million net worth That's not a really fair comparison in my book when it comes to economy of scale. It might be Bethesda granting the license, but it's still The Wand Company putting their hands in the fire producing such an item for us at built to order manufacturing. For a smaller company that means footing the bill for production beforehand and hoping to recuperate the cost afterwards. I bet Hasbro has an easier time floating monies towards production lines than The Wand Company does. Heck, they probably own some lines themselves. Either way, I hope you get to experience the Pip-Boy in person somehow once it's out. I got burned on the Starfield watch so I am still a bit sceptical, but I do think the above should be taken into account, and trust Chris and the rest to deliver a top notch product as they did with all their other Fallout products. Because he's a friend of the channel doesn't mean I'll handwave away any issues I might've got with the product. Like if the clock can't do dd-mm-YYYY, I'll flip! 😉 Whether it's a bargain will depend on the actual final product and how much they'll be going for on the secondary market once they're all sold out and out of production. Thanks for the comment though, and the opportunity for discussion. I appreciate the comparison, and the above is how I justified the price for myself. It doesn't invalidate your opinion, by no means! Let's look back at this topic after the release and I'll let you know if I still think it was a bargain or not in a later video 😅. All the best! -Vinz

The only thing I can imagine is they said “oh we’ll just port the 3000 Mk4 into 3D software, separate it into sections and then resize all those sections entirely randomly and then we’ll just paint the whole thing knobs and all a dull silver.
