Hey Coach. We won our i9 Flag Football championship in OT...in 90 degree heat. Undefeated season! Your playbooks and strategy were instrumental, and this defense in particular. The Husker (I call it the Gator here in FL, 😀) was all we ran. Our Defense sealed the deal after we scored first in OT.

Yes!! Great Emmett! You’ve been studying and preparing for so long - I love hearing that - and in OT!! Congrats. The Husker/Gator is powerful and works - obviously. Great job out there. 🏈🔥

were you able to rush the qb ? first time i9 coach here and were not allowed to rush
@emmettmortgage7 ай бұрын
@@flippintobyland7257 Yes i9 has a 7 yard rush line. We moved to 6v6 last couple of seasons. Technically all 6 can rush as long as they start behind 7 yards.

@@emmettmortgage ahh ok , yeah checked our rule book were in Va and it states no rushing . Qb has to hand off or release ball first.

Love this video. Will go back to it multiple times! I have a couple of questions: 1) If you are in a zone wouldn't you have the corner let the receiver go after 10 yards and have the safety take the receiver? In my 3-2 zone, I'd do that and only tell the corners to drop back further if no receivers were in front of them. Otherwise, I would think that front corner zone would be wide open. I didn't blitz much though (QB can run when blitzed in my league). 2) Is it hard to get the younger kids, say 3rd to 5th grade, to get into correct positions from that initial disguised grouping?

Red - looks like I left you hanging here. Let me know how it’s worked out on the field for you. 1. I agree that if you are running 3-2 and you have a safety behind the CB, then yes, the CB would back pedal to the edge of their zone then let the safety take over, ensuring no one is behind the defense. If however you don’t have that safety, then the CB must follow this best practice or they will get smoked. Just don’t let the WR get behind the defense. Then your LB will have to step back to manage the shorter yardage left open by the CB who is covering the deep WR. That’s why I like the Husker that gives one safety in the back as the monster covering the deep ball, then the CBs in the middle cover the short to mid range passes and you have a monster LB who crushes flag pulling up front in case of the short pass or run. 2. Yes, if you drill over and over their position and their responsibilities on the field and what they need to look out for in that position, they will run to that spot and execute even if they all start together at the 7 yard line. Just drill it and practice it and then let them do it on their own and they will get it.

@@CoachD Thanks for the insight. We played in 2nd and 3rd grade Gridiron last Spring where rushing the QB is very risky. First, its a 10 yard rather than 7 yard rush line. Second, the QB can run if rushed. When we blitzed, we got killed due to having a limited number of good flag pullers (almost the entire team was new 2nd graders). Thus, we played zone with 5 players. The 3-2 Zone worked well except our safeties did get burnt a few times on deep passes. They had a tough job since our edge defenders were weak and the two safeties had to come up a lot to stop the run. Even with that, we were much better than when we did man to man earlier in the year (especially against the run). This year we are playing in 6 on 6 NFL Flag league for 3rd and 4th grade where we definitely will rush since the QB can't run when blitzed. I'm co-head coaching and the two of us will have to sort out our D (he is man to man guy, I prefer Zone).

What defense would you suggest if rushing is not allowed until ball is handed off or released from qb ?
@CoachD7 ай бұрын
It depends on the age group, if they are doing 60-40 rush to pass or vice versa. Drew - I totally agree. The backyard is like a wind tunnel and I did my best when editing to clean it up. I just listened to it again and there are parts when we are away from the camera that are tough to hear. Sammie had recommended captions. Let me see what I can do. Thx for your honesty! I’ll keep you posted!! 🏈🔥

Just a quick follow up, Drew. I am uploading and correcting the captions, so you can click the CC at the top of the video to see captions, or you can "follow along with the transcript" which allows you to read along with a time stamp. I've always had challenges w mics, wind, etc. Hopefully this is a good alternative. I'll continue to work on improving the quality of these videos for you. Thx again!

Watching this again and its a tad confusing. You say to have the one guy over the center in a 1-3-1 formation. Then you say start them ALL at 7 yards? I have seen teams try this on me, and I run on them for major yardage right up the middle. I still think your original 2-3 husker is most effective and best balanced D. I think a 1-3-1 could be good too if you have a good flag puller over the center.
@CoachD2 жыл бұрын
Makes sense. I like to switch it up and keep the offense guessing so from the 7 yard line we can start all together then quickly drop into the 2-3 or depending on the offense can shift to this 1-3-1. If the kids are new or not getting it I like the idea of sticking w the original 2-3. It’s a classic for a reason. Hope you’re well, Emmett. Good to hear from you. 🏈🔥
@emmettmortgage2 жыл бұрын
@@CoachD I see the wisdom of not letting the offense read you. My team is pretty experienced and maybe could pull this off, but I like the original 2-3 and not give them an inch. :) Big game this Saturday against our nemesis. Well coached athletic team that we match up with pretty even. Lost by 2 points last game .

I thought the Husker had 2 LBs? Thats what I used to stop misdirection and broke up their short passing game. 1 LB on the C and you're going to get run on all day
@CoachD2 жыл бұрын
You can have one of the CBs move up if you’re getting run on, so that’s an adjustment you can make for sure. It’s starts w 1-3-1, but depending on the age group and type of offense, can be adjusted - so you running 2-2-1 makes sense. Great work on winning the championship!! Your players have an awesome coach! 🏈🔥

Yep - check the other comments. I had a long distant microphone on the stand that usually works great, but w the wind in my backyard- it’s terrible.
