My ukulele cover of “somewhere over the rainbow” 🌈 got over 100,000 views over time and got me started looking into how to rank for keywords.

The problem with pop covers is that you either release them the same day they are released or your cover is dead. In my case I do piano covers and it involves doing the score by ear, practicing it, mastering it, recording it, editing the video. It's absolutely impossible to do it all so fast, and well.. (Mastering the score is already several days practicing 5 or 6 hours a day....) It recently happened to me with a cover of Adele's "Easy on Me". It took me a week to do it and there were already millions of videos... By the way, I agree with you that tubebudy's colors are useless. Hasn't it ever happened to you that Vidq's score is good and tubebudy's is bad for the same keywords? 😭

As a piano player myself, I hear ya! To get something quality takes time especially when you're hearing a song for the very first time... it's a lot to take in and then reimagine as your own all at once. I've been learning a lot about TubeBuddy from Sunny Leanarduzzi and that's been really helpful - definitely recommend checking out her videos :-)

Thanks for this video Katherine! I have a cover video strategy and have gotten questions from other musicians about it. It comes down to keyword research and what you can rank for. Great tips!

Don’t you need to ask permission from original owner before making a cover?

Katherine! Katherine! This is an amazing video because covering a song doesn’t mean that you’ll get mad views. Also, you need to post your TubeBuddy affiliate link, and Pin that instead. You’re on to something here! Katherine! Do not STOP! You’re gonna hit 1,000 subs in three more months or less!

Good video. However, in my personal opinion, Tube Buddy is not the best or most accurate keyword research tool. I'm saying this from experience because it seems like no matter what keyword you use, there is just too much competition. For you to use Tube Buddy to search through a haystack and only find a few needles of keywords that maybe you can do a cover song for, seems like an awful lot of work to me with not a whole lot of promise of gain in return. I do music because I love it and I think my KZbin channel will be big one day. But only because I emphasize quality, consistency, and good SEO. Some paid promotion as well. I think all of these factors play in to authority on KZbin. The longer you do it, the more chances you are to succeed. However, it doesn't hurt to try covers. But do a cover if you like the artist. Doing a cover just because it has potential to rank if you don't even like the artist isn't going to get you great results either.

Love all your insights and totally agree that quality and consistency are huge factors over just doing a video/cover because of a ranking and not having any passion behind it!
