I spent thousands of hours reading about the 1st french revolution (as a french), but i could never really grasp everything. Our 2nd and 3rd Revolutions are much easier to get in comparison. Really understanding our 1st Revolution is probably something that requires years or decades. After so many hours, i still discover new figures, new events, and all seem so relevant... As an example, i only found 2 years ago about "The declaration of women's rights" of 1792 (i think), written by Olympe de Gouges. And so, i started reading about her, discover that she is meant to be the first feminist in History, that she was very controversed, and i found out about those people around her, all these other leading women and so on... This created more questions about more figures and events, and so on, and so forth, there is no end to it.

In my region in france, we still had house of this periode of time (like they are musum now) and they are only one small windows cause the taxe ! And fun fact : the real passion of king louis was kind blacksmith (wich was a disgrace for a king ) and he upgrade the guillotine by curving the blade and teste it later ;-)

Does pointing out an ironic observation count as being a jerk? It’s just a fact of the matter. France has great culinary tradition and yet its socioeconomic structure was so unbalanced that it couldn’t even sustain the basic nutritional needs of the majority of its population. Would you call somebody a “diq” for pointing out that it’s ironic that America, a country founded on ideals of freedom, was severely dependent on the institution of slavery?

Part of the trouble was related to what was known as "The little ice age". The period leading up to the revolution was a 20 year period of poor grain harvests and the refusal of the French to adopt other foods such as potatoes, beets and carrots which can grow through the colder, wetter and more stormy conditions. The Germans, English, and Spanish taught their people to use the root crops and although they had a hard time they weren't starving. The final three years of complete grain failure used up any storage they had.

Not entirely sure what your point is here, but these weren't just "high taxes", they were high taxes on the poorest people, and pretty much no taxes on the wealthiest.

That's not the takeaway, at all. The countries that regularly end up on the top of the world's happiness index are also the most heavily taxed (i.e. the Nordic countries). Ergo, you can tax people A LOT and still have a happy citizenry. What really matters is legitimacy and predictability. That is; it matters how and why you have high taxes. If your ruler is an unelected and incompetent king that rules in an arbitrary manner, then of course people will be mad when he raises taxes. But suppose the government represents the people's wishes honestly and increases taxes to provide a social safety net and services that benefit all. In that case, people are not going to be mad. They are going to be healthy, educated, safe, and quite satisfied.

Remember the part of the European map they show in the video is OLD borders/countries…also always remember that the world map is slightly distorted because the closer you drag a country towards the equator the smaller it gets. In this case for European countries it would be dragging it down so uk is smaller than France if it’s to scale.

According to the court physician Louis XVI had phimosis. That's tight foreskin that doesn't allow to be pulled back past the glans and causes pain trying to do so. Not sure what the remedies were back then for phimosis, but it explains why he didn't boink Marie Antoinette. I bet he presided over those Estates General meetings as busywork and an excuse not to boink Marie because he was ashamed of his physiological penile condition.

he had 4 children with marie-antoinette it must be remembered that for their wedding, they were only 15 years old and did not really know what to do when you are in a relationship. moreover, it was marie-antoinette's brother who wrote in one of his letters while he was in Paris: 'In his marital bed, he (louisXVI) has erections very well packed, he presents the member, remains there without moving for two minutes perhaps, withdraws without ever unloading, always excited, and wishing good evening. the problem in france at the time wasnt tax but the fact on how taxing worked the king had 1-5% tax max same as most nobels the people of the second estate had 15-30% tax the third estate had 85-90% tax they thought a standard sum would be fair but the problem is that it was to idealistic instead of what they thought would happen it became worse they dindt make enough money so they try to tax even more if you were in the third estate you were told that your life is for and from god and becaus most priest are either nobelmen or second class estate they instated that the third estate should honour them by working for free

I doubt it. She did spend enormous amounts of money. So did everyone else around her - that was the world she now lived in. Her new brothers in law were always having their gambling debts paid for them by her husband. It's not as if she alone decided one day to spend lots of money, that was just the done thing in the environment she inhabited. She also gave generously to charities, and on one occasion when she'd spent her allowance for the month and she had nothing to give those charities, she made sure the King paid on her behalf. One Christmas morning she had her children give their new toys away to local peasant children, stating that they had enough and didn't need them. Indeed when she became a mother she massively reigned in her spending and began to project a more mature and dignified personality - gone, for the most part, were the endless parties. When her husband fell into depression over the state of the country and his inability to do anything to resolve it, she stepped in and tried to get things done. Was she successful? No, because she was blocked at every turn, due to the role of the French Queen being far more ceremonial than having any real power, as in other monarchies. That didn't stop the press who laid almost the entire blame for the country's ills at her feet. She ignored this the best she could, but the damage to her reputation was severe.. Hundreds of years later, that reputation has never recovered. People still go about believing to this day that she actually said, "Let them eat cake."

I am of French decent and my dad was able to trace our family line back to France. They were part of that French group, the Huguenots. They were from Normandy. They did immigrate here before the USA was founded. I can't tell you how happy I was to learn my ancestors came here before the French Revolution.

Your ancestors most probably left because of persecution in France. The Huguenots were seen as traitors to the French Crown because they had denounced catholicism as their religion and not only that they had publicly insulted the Catholic faith which would lead to the series of 8 civil war and the collapse of the most prosperous dynasty in France ,the House of Valois. Interestingly the bourbons would rise to power because of the eight civil war . Henry IV would become the king of France and he was himself a Huguenot but he would convert to catholicism before his crowning . Very sadly thou the Bourbons was still the king when the revolution happened .

They emigrated to England and then to the US from England. They emigrated in Prussia, Netherlands, Switzerland, South Africa ( from the Netherlands).

Taxation as a concept under feudalism in the old times were quite different to current taxation. It was not until the time around the French revolution that anyone considered the idea of a "nation". In post Roman Empire Europe so after year 500 it would be the strong fighter of the tribe, så who would protect the trading markets by raising an army and demanding protection money for the job. As the pagan tribes became united and christianized, the new Kingdoms would have the King be hereditary, but it was still the King with his army/police that would claim protection money. The church would also collect money, but used fear and guilt tactics instead of army/police (esentially the reason for the reformation) . It was only with John Locke and Adam Smith earlier in th 18th century, a little before the US revolution, that the ideology of Liberalism would be proposed. The initial text described the idea of a state (public sector) that would provide the services of protection to the people, instead of it just being like mafia/mobsters. Lets not forgot that the peasants did not own their own land, they worked for a lord that usually had a small militia, to whom you would also pay for protection, by working on the lords fields for free for a duration. Trying to refuse would have the lords militia and the kingdoms police sent to you for punishment. Lets just conclude by saying that every proper nation today have a social populic sector, derived from Socialism. The public sector (state) is providing services, instead of just hording protection money. Of course that is different when the nation has a huge police and military budget (Unites States of America)

Sigh, socialism isn't the government doing things or intervening into the economy. Welfare isn't socialism. Socialism is about "collective" control of the means of production, ie the workplace. Now, what that actually entails can change; anarchists and more libertarian socialists typically champion democratic control of workplaces by their workers, others favor rule by council of trade unions, and the socialism we're familiar with favored nationalization of industry and total state planning, as according to communist parties, they were the vanguard of the revolution and the will of the proletariat, and thus under that definition industry was collectively controlled. Point is, none of these have anything to do with welfare or public services. Places like Norway are not socialist countries. They're capitalist countries with a strong social support network.

I am French (of a certain age...) and I only discovered 5 years ago, what the revolution really was! Contrary to what we were taught at school, as certainly in your USA, the French Revolution did not begin with the people but with the bourgeoisie jealous that the king wanted to give certain freedoms to the people. Contrary to what this video says, France was doing well financially. It would take too long to explain here but know that it is the bourgeoisie who have increased the pressure among the people. The pyramid is based upon the respective demographics of each estate. On the basis of hierarchy, clergy and nobility had equivalent powers, since both of them could raise taxes as it is shown with the peasant tax scene. Anyway, my point is ONLY based on Estates General demographics : clergy on top, nobility in the center and commoners on the bottom. The most powerful person from the clergy was paradoxically someone who reinforced the powers of the king : Cardinal de Richelieu.
