My friend's jaws hit the floor when they saw it! Anyhow nothing makes me happier than Falcom still being around alive and well after 40 years. Dr Flair! I played him in the fan translation of Dawn of Ys, so I look forward to the English voice actor for this game in how he portrays him. For whatever reason, I mainly based my rendition of Flair on Mayor Grady from the Turbo version of Ys 3, it just came to me to do it that way when thinking about the character before recording. I also did the narration based on Alan Oppenheimer's narration from the beginning of Ys 1 and 2. However, they sped my voice up to match it closer to the speed of the narrated parts, so my voice is higher. I do really wish they would have asked me to re-record my lines faster!

ys storyline is quite confusing but so interesting Picture a scenario where they assemble all their past companions from previous games for one last adventure alongside Adol to save their world. Ys X really seems to be a distillation of the 2013's, it seems to be a mix of Assassin's Creed Black Flag, a game so beloved in Japan it even had a manga by a famous artist and of course, Metal gear Rising; the blocking this time is much closer to the action parry of Raiden with all the systems in place, especially the reversing of some attacks. While not as innovative as Ys of old, the tag system is pretty unique so far and seems to be a true evolution to what Zwei tried to do. Certainly much more enjoyable than Ys 9, hope they keep this formula and get Adol and Dogi as a pair for the Kefin remake, in this style of combat. A shame they keep locking away Adol's old armours though, not so much a fan of his casual clothes look, especially when they take the time to render the Cleria armour in beautiful detail at times.

Adol's not sticking with any girl puts me more in the mind of the comic/cartoon hero Lucky Luke. In one story, after he finishes escorting a travelling theater, one of the headwomen gives him a later which reads "To Lucky Luke, who is only a poor lonesome cowboy because he chooses to be." Same deal with Adol. For whatever reason he never settles down even though he's found plenty of prospective candidates.

I liked 9, we got a load of time going into characters backstories and motivations, the setting was so different to 8, and i guess the expanded traversal was done decently well enough to get by-could have done with less repetition tho. I was waiting for your review and I'm glad it's finally here. As a big Ys fan, this game being more in line with Ys VIII sounds very promising: I thought Ys IX was a couple of step backwards for the franchise in most areas. The blocking system introduced in Nordics seems interesting too. All in all, I can't wait for the western release. I gotta say only two things bum me out: first and foremost, I checked out japanese sales and they're VERY low after what I thought was an upwards trajectory. Before anyone tells me I shouldn't care about sales when judging a game's quality, I do not. I do, however, very much care of this franchise's financial success because it directly impacts the next installment in every regard. My best guess is many ppl didn't care for Ys IX after loving VIII so that impacted Nordics' reception. The second thing that bothers me is the constant jumping back and forth in Adol's life between games. I'd like for the franchise to move forward and take advantage of all the world building and returning characters. I do not get the point of having every Ys game happen in the same universe and to the same protagonist when it has little to no impact in any regard. This is even more surprising considering Falcom has the most inter-connected franchise in the history of RPGs.

Preordered🎉 and started playing day one (Asian ver). I'm at end game currently. The dual-guarding sys is a big issue here, it blocks EVERYTHING WITHOUT losing any HP (except blue attacks which is super RARE n only few enemies do it); unless you r surrounded by so MANY enemies or boss continues 20hits-combo u, it NEVER fade. It's especially INVINCIBLE during secret monster n most boss fights since its 1vs1 situation (i killed several secrets monsters at the 1st try while i was 35-45 levels less than them; as far as i keep guarding building revenge meter, then hit back during a long open window; I win)... Most important, the map n level design are super boring n downgraded from ys 9 n 8; all areas are flat w 2D like design and MOST areas look the SAME since they r all islands. AND sea battle is a joke n gets bored quickly; plus at the first 10-15 hrs of the game, the boat moves SUPER SLOW wasting few hours just getting point A to point B... SAD!😢😢

I'm excited to see how this new system evolves. It seems like whenever Falcom switches up the gameplay system, the second game in the system is where the kinks get worked out and something awesome happens. Ys 6 was great, but Oath in Felghana is where that era's style really took shape. Ys Seven was good, but Memories of Celceta took it further. They also seem to like alternating between numbered entries and remakes, so I'm hoping Ys 5 gets the treatment next.

I love how many people love VIII and shit on IX, depsite IX being the better game from a gameplay perspective. I also love how people complain about IX, because it's "too walled off," even though VIII does the exact same thing in a different way. Its hilarious really. Don't get me wrong, I like VIII. There are even things that feel better about Lacrimosa. But IX is simply the better gameplay game.
@BasementBrothers Жыл бұрын
I agree on the gameplay, but I think for most people the story and theme are even more important. There was just something about the way Ys VIII had you stuck on the island looking for survivors and gradually revealing more of the landscape... and then the big reveal partway through with Dana and everything. Something about it just clicked really well for me and a lot of people. It was the right game at the right time that really breathed new life into the series.
@Xoulrath_ Жыл бұрын
@@BasementBrothers yeah, and I completely get that the story really matters for some players. Also, the whole stranded island vibe is definitely classic Ys. I completely understand people preferring VIII for the story, and/or the characters, and/or the setting/vibe. But when some of those players talk about VIII being better from an actual game mechanic standpoint, I feel the need to say something, which I did lol. Regardless of which a player prefers, they are both worth at least a single playthrough in my opinion. As for X, I'm kind of trying to not watch content on it to not be spoiled. So I just hope that it takes the best aspects of VIII and IX and makes for the best Ys yet. From the looks of what I have seen, Nordics looks to do just that.
@BasementBrothers Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I definitely don't want to say that IX is bad, cause it certainly isn't. It was pretty good. I would say indeed X takes some of the good aspects of IX and VIII and combines them (along with aspects of other games). But where VIII felt somehow fresh in its time (for gaming in general), X really feels to me like it doesn't do anything new. It's fine for what it is though.
@derrickcrowe3888 Жыл бұрын
I actually enjoyed VIII's gameplay more than 9's. 9 has too much visual clutter and the enemy designs are nonsensical. It might technically have more refined combat mechanics, but the poor design elements, for me, detracted more than the refined mechanics added. And saying 8 and 9 are equally blocked off is a great example of why looking at raw mechanics without context leads to poor game design. In VIII, you'e stranded on an island and slowly build a foothold as you expand your search for survivors, with some paths blocked off until you have the skills/manpower to clear them. There is an intuitive, mechanical, and narrative reason for the progression. In IX, you're in a city where some unexplained ancient magic seemingly arbitrarily tells you which district to go to today by blocking only the player with magic walls. There is no reason for this except to keep the player out of the wrong area. So you're right that 8 and 9 are comparably blocked off, but the broader game design informs how we experience these mechanics. Which is why the one where you overcome natural obstacles that would realistically impede Adol is praised while the one where it all but explicitly has the developers say "No, player, you can't go here until we tell you to" is criticized for the same mechanics.
@Xoulrath_ Жыл бұрын
@@derrickcrowe3888 I couldn't disagree more. It's the same gameplay with a different narrative that blocks off the player. One of them is finding castaways; the other uses magic. To act as though the magic being arbitrary in a game to begin with is beyond silly. It's fine if you prefer the VIII way of doing things. I also completely understand the visual clutter complaint about combat (especially if you were unfortunate enough to play on the Switch). But even so, you're basically saying that one feels better to you, even though they are the same thing. That's fine, but it doesn't keep the locked off areas from being the same thing mechanically. Areas of the game are gated off, and each game handles the unlocking of those gates in different ways. To act as though Adol couldn't just climb over or go around the obstacles impeding him in VIII is just ignoring that for the sake of saying that VIII did it better. They are the same mechanic, and each game uses the story to allow progression in its own way. As for combat specifically, you might prefer VIII, even if you played on a system that didn't bog down with IX. The visual distraction, as I mentioned, can certainly distract from the fighting. It still doesn't change the fact that the precision of IX is simply better. We can call that nitpicking, but it isn't. As someone who up until recently was playing both VIII and IX side by side, I got EXTEMELY FRUSTRATED going from VIII after playing IX. It was much more satisfying to play Dana first and then jump to Nox, because the combat was simply smoother and more responsive. Anyway, thanks for your response. As I mentioned in another comment, if you like adventure games like this, you can go wrong with either.

Glad to see that Falcom is finally switching up the formula with Ys X, even if that means cribbing from Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (after all if your going to copy Assassin's Creed why not take from one of their best games). It does kind of highlight a sad state of affairs when Ys when from being a pioneer in the action-RPG genre to being this late to the party. But I can't really blame Falcom too much, the industry has simply grown too much for a relatively small company like Falcom to lead the charge. Like Assassins’ Creed IV, you say? *breaks out credit card*

Does the game actually feature a romance or is it just implied?

I get the impression you got a little too stuck on Assassin's Creed IV. Most of your description of the naval gameplay sounds more like Sid Meyer's Pirates.

Brother are you the reviewer I got into an argument about regarding spoiling games, which lasted for several days?

I don't think so.

Y's10 should've of been an actual next gen game with how powerful the ps5 hardware is, not a game that looks like it came out during tail end of ps3 lol. If at the very least looked like granblue relink but not even comes close to that. It's like they rather poop out these copy pasta games every few years to only focus on their niche audience and don't care at all on expanding and appealing to mass market which is so so sad cos the gameplay is fun and the franchise legacy should be appreciated by everyone.

Of course there are always going to be people who have that opinion no matter what, but if you understand where Falcom is as a company and what they have been releasing for the last 10 years, then there is nothing about this particular PS5 title from them that is unexpected. They (and most Japanese devs nowadays for that matter) just don't have the money/resources to make a true current gen game, and never will again. All you're going to get from them on PS5 is the high resolution output and framerate. There's otherwise, no reason this game needs to be on PS5 at all, obviously, and I hope most people understand that going in.

The development cost of even true ps4 level fidelity titles is too high to recoup with this type of game. It would put the future of the company at risk if they so much as tried. No Falcom, please keep making cool games with upscaled ps3 graphics. Ive come to terms with it.

@@BasementBrothers But that's the point I was trying to make most ppl wont understand or care or know about that sort of stuff, and when talking about new comers to the franchise there wont be as many or if any at all as ppl will look the other way after seeing gameplay of ys10. Thus keeping the company "small" forever and ever pooping out the same game with some minors gameplay gimmicks and that's it, not saying that's a bad thing for it's core audience but when u look at the overall scoop it's a huge waste of opportunity.

@@GatsuRage but the game is still better than any of the interactive movies that pretend to be games are. we need more game series like ys. not less of them.
@Especis7 ай бұрын
What is even this argument. Falcom is not a AAA studio. They cannot afford giving us games this good and having graphics that could compete with games like God of War Ragnarok. And to be honest, it doesnt have to. Ys games are games made with passion and it shows unlike most of those AAA which are just money grubs with a mediocre experience. Focusing on a niche audience sure isnt bringing millions and millions of dollars, but not every company has the desire to go as big as a company like EA or Ubisoft. Also, I can say that Ys games are miles better than anything those two released in the past decade

I'm a bit disappointed you didn't jokingly show off the PS5 game's packaging in the same meticulous way you do for older games.

Hmm. So it safe to say Ys 8 still the BEST Ys game so far?

lol "sure why not" is exactly how I feel when playing the newer Ys games. Wish they'd go to a modern version of the Napishtim engine or something.

Ys VIII was a major success. Ys IX not so much due to its constricted urban environment although I know some people enjoyed it. Ys X doesn't want to make the same mistake. You've got everything that was successful in past games mixed in with open world elements. I think it will do well when it releases worldwide.
@hylje Жыл бұрын
Making the exact same game over and over again is not so good either. I think it’s good that Falcom tries to do something new (like with IX), because even a successful formula needs to be refreshed to stay interesting. Variety is also sort of a palate cleanser from the player’s perspective. You can play the exact same game twice and enjoy it more if you don’t play them back to back, but have something different in between.

Funny how the graphical presentation of the game is also about 10 years old, just like Black Flag! They really should have put a little more effort into making the game look like it was made for current gen consoles, it’s almost a carbon copy of Lacrimosa of Dana
@BasementBrothers Жыл бұрын
The graphics are what you would expect. Falcom doesn't have the resources to make a AAA title like Ubisoft. The high resolution and framerate are all you're going to get. And for the record, it does look better than Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana.

Ys 8 was the winning formula. Building on it mechanically is the best option.
