I have gotten a lot of comments recently from people who have said they don't feel comfortable playing Yu-Gi-Oh! in person, and I wanted to try and reassure those people, it's okay, come play!
This is the website to find OTS stores near you, OTS stores HAVE to run locals to keep their OTS status so be sure to check!

Hi, I'm one of the judges on staff for YCS Indy and I got recommended this video by KZbin, if you've got any questions about what the YCS experience might be like for you since it's your first one, please ask! I can answer most any questions except things like "How will X interaction be ruled at this event" as those types of questions can only be answered by the head judge(s) on the weekend of the event.

@Mg-jq9hu
@Mg-jq9hu 2 ай бұрын
@@TheMismatcher This isn't a question I can answer as it's more of a general "Why has Konami made X decision" and I'm not a Konami employee. There is an Organized Play support email that you can reach out to that I cannot post in youtube comments as it flags it as a URL that's the place to ask those kinds of questions. What I can answer is going to fall more in the lines of "What kind of activities can I expect at YCS Indy", "Is there stuff for me to do if I don't do well in/don't want to play in the main event or don't enjoy modern yugioh/playing meta decks", "How much of a time commitment are these tournaments", etc. Thanks for asking!

@Mg-jq9hu
@Mg-jq9hu 2 ай бұрын
@@PyckledNyk It's not too bad at all, if you're in North America, you can take the judge program Ruling Comprehension Level 1 exam on Konami's public website (google konami judge program yugioh). Passing this test allows you to register for the judge program and once you're a registered judge, you can judge local tournaments and ask tournament officials that run regionals in your area if you can be on staff at those as well. Much more information about the judge program is available on Konami's website than I can provide in a youtube comment.

I've been lucky to never have any horror stories when I DID go to a local scene. For the most part people have been at the worst, just kinda anti-social, or awkward. I had one guy who very clearly was neural divergent got kinda angry I had an upside-down cross pin on my jacket (I was very into SKullgirls and Parasoul has that as her character logo). But I will say this, the lack of hygiene was a MASSIVE reason I stopped going to locals. It wasn't just people smelling bad, it was 20+ people who all have not taken showers in the same small shop, hotbox-ing the entire store in BO. This was about a year before they enacted that cleanliness rule, but I don't know how well enforced that rule is in the local scene. Right now I'm getting back into collecting physical cards again, since Yubel got support and I have always wanted them to get support. I'm slowly and surely building up a functional deck, and maybe once I'm done I'll think about attending a locals again. Maybe.

I will never, ever, ever buy cards for irl play unless there is a drastic and overwhelming shift in prices (which will never happen). When tenpai is being touted as a "budget" deck despite requiring the ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR Trident Dragion, anyone outside the card game sphere just laughs. $100 dollars for a cardboard rectangle is absurd and I will not accept that. I will continue playing Master Duel for the low price of free instead. (Not to be antagonistic towards you, I just hate Konami)

I used to play at Locals before Covid. My locals had a meta player that would defeat most people, with me being the only person who ever got a match win against him, with a Solidarity Deck. And I only got one match win against him. But, when I got the match win, he stood up and said "...This is my first match loss at a local since 5ds." Then he stretched out his hand and says "You need to play at the higher tournaments." I shook his hand and said "I'll consider it." Then Covid hit, and I stopped playing Yugioh in person.

What stopped me from playing for the longest time were my fellow students back in my school days. There was a Yu-Gi-Oh club in my middle school and anyone who joined was ridiculed just for playing by being made fun of or even having their cards stolen or ripped apart. I didn't want to have my cards ruined/stolen or have my social life plummet down but I felt really sad deep down because I wanted to enjoy the TCG. Recently, I started rewatching duel monsters out of nostalgia and I dug out my old cards and wanted to get my hands on some more cards from the anime. I went to a card store and bought a few packs, and the store clerk told me they held tournaments every week. I laughed it off thinking I absolutely do not want to go thinking the stereotype of Yu-Gi-Oh players having poor hygiene was 100% factually correct, but something clicked in me and now I'm thinking of actually going. Funny how this video popped up for me the moment I started debating on whether or not I should go.

As someone who went to locals a few times, it's a bit rough depending on your local game store's meta but it's a lot of fun; had a buddy bring an old school Chaos (light and dark) deck and a lot of people got a good laugh out of it, with one person even donating a Magic Cylinders to make the deck more effective. I want to go more but haven't had the time recently, it was a good bit of fun.

i've played yugioh since the begining, including frequenting locals since 2002, regionals since 2006, and sjc/ycs since 2007, and, no. online play is genuinely just a better experience. locals is exhausting, nearly never ran well, rulings are inconsistent from judge to judge, from event to event, people lie, cheat, steal, and tcg is just far too expensive in modern day yugioh. back in my day a minor could reasonably amass a collection with an allowance and tournament wins. you can't do that anymore, and i got bills and shit to pay. i quit the physical tcg in 2011 because i couldn't keep up with the rising cost of the game, and all of my friends retired. i play master duel because it's accessible, free, rulings are correct, and i don't have to interact with people across the table.

Another point to bring up here that might be a hinderence is if your local card shop doesn't really focus on Yu-Gi-Oh! as much as other card games. Sure, every card shop sells Yu-Gi-Oh! and may have a tourney weekly, but I been to a few card shops here in NYC where I noticed one game is more popular than it would be at another card shop. For example, at NYC there's a comic store call Montasy, which has a healthy outlet for Magic and Pokemon players, meanwhile Gamer's Choice, a cardshop also at NYC where most of the top tier Yu-Gi-Oh! players in the city play at, stop selling Magic cards all together last year due to low sales.

I'm atm mostly a casual but Morden type of game play player not competitive in the slightest but still learning on to better format decks and combos to at least play in a way that I can have a back and forth with my opponent for a few turns at least. Been playing this game for 22 years this year and I get more out of playing with my friends and other players of different variety than I do online... I like master duel but I hate the pressure of playing competitively which is why I play there at times but not often cuz it's so easy to feel burnt out. Insane amount of money for my country, 1.5 hour public transport there and then another back. Difficulties with in-town travel on Sunday night from the station to the other side of town once I get back... Sometimes I spend 4 hours on travel just to play 4-5 matches at locals 2-3 times a month. (Only locals are once a week, and I sometimes work Sundays.) Yet I LOVE IT. A lot more than any online play. People tolerated a lot of my mistakes, and still help out whenever something gets too hard to grasp. I'm willing to go even if I work 6 days before and after even if it's my only rest day. I often think it's not worth it, whenever I take a look at the cost, both monetary and the time investment, but then I realize it's basically my only social avenue, and it was the first step I took out of my room in a long time as I'm getting close to 30 now. I don't think I will regret it a couple years from now. Just hope to make more friends and get closer to people too, not just during the duels. It's a process and I cherish the opportunity my childhood hobby has given me now as an adult.

I love playing in person but I think it REALLY depends on the local. Altough I live in a Metropolis; almost every card shop there only plays magic and pokemon which gave me very low options. The only local who consistently hosts OTS is absolutely dreadfull to play at. Most of the players seem more interested in the trading and business part of card collecting and I would get insulted because of the deck I was playing or my skill level no matter what I would bring (mind you its not like I play Eldlich stun or anything I was mostly playing Salad). The announcement of Tenpai and how cheap it is made me hopeful that I could play yugioh in paper again but considering its already getting hated online it doesnt make me want to play locals again.

I've been playing with this group of guys for about 5 years now and they're really cool. I already had my main learning of Yugioh through Duel Links from almost when it released after never knowing what Yugioh is. I really wish that I could consolidate my Duel Links experience into a quick course to take home and learn. I'm quite unique as a player. I usually play pure Decks with 3 Ash in my tournament Deck or no Handtraps at all and only 3 Solemn Strike because I just don't enjoy those kinds of cards. My best Deck is actually my currently 58 card Pure Skull Servant Deck with a whole lot of one-off Spells like Raigeki and Change of Heart because I really like them. Heck, the best Monsters in my Extra Deck are Relinquished Anima, Link Dharc, Black Rose Dragon, and Knightmare Unicorn. And yet, I'm one of the most important players for my friends to play when they're actually testing their Decks for tournament preparation because of how competent my Deck and my play are. I just wish that I could instill my ideas into the new players(both of my locals group and new players reading this) as well as some veteran players(including some of my friends sometimes). 1: Learn what makes a card good to you. You're own experiences can go against "regular" Deckbuilding strategy and what works for you can be figured out by testing your cards. Learning what makes a card good to you will help you far more understanding the game as opposed to asking/getting told by the veteran players what tech cards they would play every time you think about changing your Decks. And yes, running Trap Cards you find cool is a fine idea. 2: You can go over 40 cards. I've been saying this well before recent Deckbuilding Theory but as long as every card you put into your Deck serves a good enough purpose to run and it works enough times to satisfy you, run as many cards as you want. 3: Build your Deck how you want. You can accept some feedback but you don't have to play Ringus Dingus the Non-Themed Magician, Unrelated Dragons A, B, and C, Ronald's Spell of Disagreeing With You, or whatever in your Dark Magician Deck. A new player at my shop is learning about the game and has a pure Speedroid Deck and my friend keeps suggesting that he should add the WIND Kashtira and I don't agree even if it read "If Monsters on the field are WIND Attribute: you win.". 4: You don't have to play high power tournament contender Decks. If you wanna build Toons or Elemental HERO's or 7-Colored Fish Beatdown, you can find players that wanna play that power level of Yugioh or something similar to it. Sorry for the long ramble but it was 30 minutes ago when I wanted to respond and I am unbelievably long winded.

Thank you for a video like this. Personally i think toxicity of the yugioh community is barely present irl and mainly on twitter and youtube. Funny enough when i tried to intorduce a friend into the game and take him to locals a very big "anti toxic, casual" yugioh youtube channel who does lots of hate farming gave my friend an impression that Yugioh is super competative, you have to play the best deck, you have to play at a YCS level and there is no "casual" locals and that everyone in the yugioh community is toxic caused him to not want to even give the game a try. The idea youtubers push that there is no "casual" way to play yugioh and the idea they propagate of "game is over in 1 turn" just turns new players off from wanting to try the game, all while they claim those criticisms are there to help the new players. More people should go to locals if they can and they will realise its way more fun than they can imagine

And I run one Blue-Eyes 'cause that's all I have, along with a kaiju and some other mediocre generics I could get my hands on. It's understandably weak as I don't usually buy cards, but I've put my heart and soul into making it the best deck I could. I love the feeling of knowing the deck in and out and the satisfaction I get when pulling anime-level combos (yes, those are a thing in any deck). Plus I love teaching and playing against brand new players who still have yet to buy a deck box or even get a set of sleeves. Thats why I rebuilt my old Personal Favorite deck Mecha Phantom Beasts just to give those players a fun yet very interesting duel.

Locals is a nightmare, especially in California. Theft is out of control and multiple car break-ins occur often in larger cities. We just had a guy lose his entire 40K collection parked outside of In-N-Out (which is also next to the LGS) from a break-in. Once you get past that inconvenience, the types of players on a certain spectrum, aren't exactly the most welcoming unless you agree with their politics and world view. It's 2024, yet these same people demand to see your vax card + proof of booster(s) before playing with them. It's worst in the MTG community, but I digress. I also have to disagree about learning to play YuGiOh via Master Duels vs. Paper. At least with Master Duels, there isn't someone that could miss a chain (Tearlaments) and gingerly try to "take it back" or stall for a judge call. With Master Duel, either you mis-click or you don't. Everything is neatly chained the way they are suppose to be, which is a good first step learning how your deck would function under multiple negates/chains/interaction; without the other player rules lawyering you, or worst "accidentally" double normal summon after spending nearly 10 minutes to resolve effects during milling. I also learned to play Swordsoul, exclusively on Master Duel and it's a much better tool to practice the deck, considering how much time is wasted searching and shuffling. Same goes with Traptrix and Branded. You save so much time from the constant deck shuffling, compared to an in-person event. It's so easy to hit up discord and see if anyone wants to play a gauntlet match, so you can learn your good and bad match-ups. You can't do that in IRL/LGS sometimes, because that one Snake-Eyes player has a completely different schedule than yours. Even when you do schedule out a week in advance, you'll still be spending half the time interrupted by other people walking in and out asking for Commander games or asking you to move for a random 40k campaign. If you're a full grown adult, with family and kids; maybe the LGS/YCS life isn't practical and the sheer convenience of Master Duel just fixes it, like it did for me.

If you have kids, but cheap deck cores and start teaching them to play. If nothing else it lets you play some simple/dumb yugioh and they might want to learn more as they grow up. I am surprised to see someone from Cali who seems to be politically right in a KZbin comment.

I have wanted to play at locals for a long time off and on now, and can't really bring myself to do it. I've bought cards and even an entire raidraptor deck telling myself im going to go, and then don't go, and the cards just slowly lose any relevancy they had. To me going into a locals where I don't know anyone is the same as going into a restaurant, seeing a table of family friends all sitting together talking, and then you just sit down with them like you're part of it. Sucks man Also slightly afraid id lose once and start crying

I am in the first 3 min kind of person. Live in a remote place with no card shop near by, and while I like playing 60 card full of one offs "good stuff" dark tribute with a lair of darkness SD while my brother does a similar thing with utopia is fun, it's not really the same and lair isn't exactly a fun deck to go against (also i am not financially independent yet, but that's a different matter all together). Tho I really like this video and it's messageI sometimes wish I could find someone to occasionally do something like a draft mode or some stipulation to implement.

For the longest time i thought there wasn’t a locals scene where I lived and found about this one place at the mall but YGO was banned by the new owner and I found another nerd type store and it’s alright but god damn the smell can be so bad when there’s a lot of people, aside from that it’s really fun to play in person despite me slurring my speech and getting shaky from being nervous but the players are really nice

My first locals wasn’t too good. A couple players were clearly “playing with their food” when they had lethal on board because they were mad that I brought a Gren maju deck. I’ve been going to a different OTS store and my experience has been much better. Except the time my opponent top decked summon limit game 1 and lightning storm game 2. Glad the former is banned

love the advice on the start low and build high thing, I did that when I first got into the game. Went to the local shop and got me 3 Albaz Strike structure decks, and just added cards as time went by. Turned that 30-dollar deck into a 600-dollar combo machine over the span of like 2 years.

I would get back into paper yugioh, but as someone who wants to play salad, a card that you need two of for the deck to even function costs 40$ a copy thanks to it seeing play in Snake Eye. I pray we get a Raging Phoenix Reprint soon. I know it's "Too early" but I wanna play the physical game so badly and that one card is pricing me out of playing the deck even at a suboptimal level!
@QuestLogFaker
@QuestLogFaker 8 күн бұрын
I respect that, but Salamangreat in particular is one of the most budget friendly decks in Yu-Gi-Oh's history right now, nearly every main deck salad card is pennies, and so many of the extra deck staples the deck relies on (Accesscode, Heatsoul, etc) have been price dropped recently due to reprints; even Salamangreat of Fire is like $5 now. Two expensive extra deck cards that are only needed to play "optimally" shouldn't stop you from trying. Salad is dope and worth building.
@JakeTheJay
@JakeTheJay 8 күн бұрын
@QuestLogFaker it's 80$ to get two. That's pretty absurd for my budget. It'd cost as much as a whole new deck and I don't have money to spare for that. If we add the "Of Fire"s in and Promethian Princess, it goes over 100$ just to get a handful of cards

If you had a Trident Dragion in your old yugioh collection, I would recommend Tenpai/Sangen as the archetype for you. Swordsoul with Tenyi monsters, and Floowandereeze are also good budget decks. Barrier Statue Stun or Control are good decks that focus on making the game as slow and difficult to play into as possible. the "One Bad Day" is a Stun deck that is pretty cheap and has a few tops now. It is comprised of spellcasters who say "no one can special Summon now" and a resource loop designed to always trade blow for blow while getting a +1 here or there for game.

Well online is free and social less. Yeah people just keep saying, ban x card. Well being rude is not innately evil, people have a natural right to have individuality. The store part, that’s rights infringement. Monitoring emotions is bad, you’re denying your innate wisdom. Well the movie thing is because it’s early. 1 last thing, what if I can’t win.

Why does everyone call it "on paper" or "in paper" or "paper"? It makes no sense, and it also sounds dumb. It should be "on tabletop" because that's the medium the game is played upon. Paper is what the cards are made of.

I am from India and I would kill to have a local yu gi oh scene. We do not have any TCG here but surprisingly there are a lot of interests. Sadly due to having no access to the cards, we have to play it through online simulators. Master duel release made it really convenient for me and now I play MD exclusively. But would love to play the game in person some day. 🥲
