Konami's Abandoned Yu-Gi-Oh! Format - Battle Pack Draft

Today we return to my FAVORITE way to play Yu-Gi-Oh, BP Draft is a relic of the games past and something worth investigating today. So many of the cards are so cheap and easy to obtain that maybe, you should consider putting your own cube together.

This is infuriating to read. They did. Every Speed Duel box comes with instructions on how to draft it as a cube. Unfortunately, YGO players are allergic to any format that isn't Advanced Constructed for some reason.

​@@AuraSniperthere is ONE event that master duel always peaked the daily players its legend anthology. Why not just release a legend anthology boxes specifically for anthology format, its captured the all gas no brakes that yugioh have but less threatening disruption.

When I got that sealed box of BP3 it was such a nostalgia trip, and we've supplemented the box with cards ever since. Could you imagine what a draft product could look like nowadays with the number of genetics? Geeeez

Drafting is super fun in every game I've done it with. Even the couple times I've messed with staying ygo with friends has been fun. Just a shame konami hasn't given us anything for drafting anytime recently. Wish i was in the game at the time to exerience the battle pack drafts

Ayyye! Domain mention! That's awesome! I do think that draft requires konami to focus on more general card sets as opposed to something like the "monster league" rule

Look, they made around 800m from master duel and Japan ocg this year no 2 below Pokémon tcg with 1.2b sales. The only way you can get a draft format boxes is to rally entire ocg region in unison to tell Konami to make a draft box, asking for tcg department will never work because all of the decisions came from Konami Japan which priorize local fanbase.

800 only counts for Japan sales not including other region in asia, mtg only made around 40m in Japan btw but their sister duel master is on no 3 with around 150m. yugioh is more than thriving without draft and majority of yugioh playerbase aren't interested in drafting at all, can't blame Konami Japan to not making a product that guaranteed to fail due no one asking for it except a few thousand minorities.

Rivalry is akin to sealed. You randomly receive one of 8 decks, each different from the others in your pod. You make no changes, you play with the deck you're handed, and they generally do not have everything available to the archetype if they've gotten recent support. No Trouble Sunny for Live-twin, no Nightchaser for S-force. If you're handed Myutant, you have a very strong chance to win your pod.

I was just thinking about how a LOB Draft would be a wild time; super slow but mostly accessible. Sadly, I don’t think I have a large enough group interested to go in on a box to make it happen (and I’m sure even the 25th Anniversary Boxes will be worth more sealed down the line).

I was always curious if draft would work with Yugioh considering how tribal (a Magic term I know eww) focused the whole game is even in the older sets. Only in the years up to 2008 were decks literally piles of just good stuff. By essentially eliminating monster type, BP3 sounds like a wild ride of interactions.

There's a lot of wacky stuff possible in Yu-Gi-Oh if you ignore some of the rules lmao, the first two incarnations tried to play by the rules and keep things generic, it was only near the end that Konami decided to jump the shark and it was great. Making your own cubes and your own rules is amazing if you have people to share it with.

I still think a format like Legend Anthology in Master Duel is one of the best alternative formats to play the game. The format is still constructed, and up to date, but it is slower compared to the current standard YGO. From my perspective, YGO is very interesting because everything can be constructed to be a bigger strategy. This kind of format is also good for new players to learn the game because the format is less intimidating but still plays like a modern format. . My complaint about other alternative formats. The draft is too random because I believe the synergy between all the cards in our deck is part of YGO's identity. Time Wizard, is not up to date, also, most decks in Time Wizard format are just Old META. Those decks already have the spotlight in their era. I want an alternative format because I want to see other decks that didn't get any attention before.

Last year when the old school displays re-released my brother and I did get one of each and did exactly this. And it was a lot of fun jumping from gen to gen and ever so slightly increase you deck tactics. But I guess, I had the better draws because out of all the matches we played, he only got round and got obliterated the rest of the time. Actually Konami could do something like this in master duel like on a monthly based where you for say 1000 gems would get 100 packs of a special pack with older cards. This would not only be a great option for players new and old to easily access some stables but it would potenially lure in a hole new group of players. Well, maybe not new because I think most ygo fans have an account by now, but they could increase their active numbers while doing some fan service.

Rivalry is mostly pre constructed at big events, stores running the event can choose to make it constructed or sealed. Massive reprint sets have made most of these Archetypes easy to make, the Rivalry Webpage even has guides for each of the decks as well as sample decklists for the decks that official big events follow

That's what I figured, I wouldn't expect the stores to front that cost or pass it down when they could just make it constructed and still expect reasonable turnout, I appreciate the confirmation though 🤙

This can be said in reverse tbh, mtg tried to collab with Hatsune miku to catch japan and Asian market in general but still barely made 10% of yugioh made in Japan and asia, got cockblocked by weiss as well in terms of popular franchise

i tried to draft yu gi oh and its basically impossible right now. Can't really do anything when each card pack contains 10 different archetypes of cards and none of the cards are even remotely cross compatible

This doesn't really work in Yu-Gi-Oh. At least when it comes to more modern packs. Because it would come down to who can build the first archetype. So when you would make these packs they would have to be non archetypes. That's the only way to bring them back is to exclude archetypes.

Gutted that Prerelease Sealed Draft doesn't get the praise it deserves. It's a limited format with ongoing support from Konami that's a blast to play and can make buying into core sets more worth your while. But you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who even knows it exists.
