The sexual assault theory feels too extreme. I always thought madotsuki has been suffering from social anxiety so horribly that she forgot what humanity was entirely and sees people as monsters, and only her closest friends (poniko, etc) are the only normal people to her

While it's good to see the speculation about the games meaning still floating about it's sad that the Madotsuki was raped/abused/pregant theories are the only ones that gain traction. One theory of course focuses on Anxiety dreams as many themes and symbols of can be linked to things a young girl would be anxious about in the real world (maybe even enough to lock herself away from it) reinforcing her shut-in status. The other theory that get's overlooked is Madotsuki isn't actually a singular "character" but instead is a representative character meant to give us a "view" into general fears of Japanese society, it's helped by the fact Madotsuki isn't a name and translated means Window/Aperture possibly hinting at her status as our eyes into the dream world.

From what I've gathered, when he was a kid he accidentally walked into an adult theater. He came across a scene of a man having sex with a woman and then killing her. He mistook this as rape, and he was never the same since (which could explain a lot of the stuff in Mother and Earthbound).

He never said Giygas was based on the mistaken rape scene itself but that he took inspiration from experiencing such a trauma as walking into an adult theater. Why you may ask? Because this experience meant the death of his inner child, the loss of INNOCENCE, and that is the main theme in the whole series. If you pay close attention to the events surrounding the entire series and its main protagonists, which are not older than 10-13 (in other words, KIDS), we can see really adult stuff around, such as the effects on drugs and alcohol, industrialism, police brutality, technological takeover, deforestation, transhumanism, and lot of things that are hidden in a brilliant and abstract manner. Giygas is not an exception, the last battle between him and Ness is a metaphorical representation of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Giygas is the inner child, this is shown through his childlike, almost friendly dialogues, the fetus imagery and the fact that Ness' own face is reflected on the Devil Machine. This is more like an allegorical ''abortion'' as Ness wipes out his inner child, or at least the little that remains before becoming an adult. In Mother 3 we are shown this loss of innocence in a more direct manner, the death of Lucas' mom. Yep, pretty psychological stuff. Not many people see this, most of them would even discard theories of this sort by using the plot as argument. It seems to me that lots of Earthbound fans take the whole thing, like, too literally, few people to none sees the bigger picture, its metaphores. If people believe Animal Farm by George Orwell or Watership Down by Richard Adams are about rebellious animals, they need some abstract thinking lessons.

I had a similar dream as a child where I was locked up for trying to free the Muppets from prison, and from my cage I could see my mom reporting me missing. I called out to her, but she didn’t hear and walked away. Some music from a Franklin movie credits started growing louder until I woke, discovering I had fallen asleep while watching a movie and overnight the recording kept replaying itself (since that’s what my cable box used to do then). The funny thing is, they baited me in the cage using Mother’s Day gifts. Anyway I cried and ran to my mother, and that dream has haunted me since.

I still come back to this video now and again. I first saw it in 2016 when I was 16 and going through a rough time, and it introduced me to this amazing game. I'm in a weird position where I played the game for a while, enjoyed it and then picked up the novelization without finishing the game It's a really good book with a really weird tone but the Japanese in it is insane. Every few pages I'll hit a paragraph with so many weird kanji in it that it takes me a good 40 mins of looking stuff up to have a clue what's happening Awesome video! My take on the sexual assult theory is that I dont think Madotsuki wasn't actually sexually assulted, but more has a fear of it. There is also a scene where you can see her huddled in a closet, which makes me think she might be questioning her sexuality or gender identity? Perhaps she is asexual?

Yeah for me she's definitely questioning her sexuality and gender. Only questioning though since her being in the closet in the dream world implies that she's still thinking about it. (It could be also her reminiscing about thinking about it, but her still being in the process of questioning and being AFAB is more likely for me.) I think she's thinking about her sexual identity and/or a non-binary gender. I could also be bias though since i'm on the non-binary spectrum lol.

First I discovered your Rayman reviews, then moved on to Silent Hill, and now this video. Wow, thank you for showing me so many games I would never play or even learn about. I as well have a pretty good memory of my dreams, especially bad ones. And ALSO most of my nightmares with computer displaying some hellish stuff on the monitor. It probably refers to the fact, that my first computer was most importantly my dad's workstation, so I was constantly afraid if I didn't break something and as a result delete his data (and I usually did). Although one thing that disturb me the most, is what was going on in the author's head when he was designing all these scary elements and randomly triggered events. Somehow, I found these twisted low-resolution graphics more intimidating than any Silent Hill or Resident Evil monster ever created.

One fangame I've played for Yume Nikki was a game called "Someday". I once heard that to most people, it's by the third game a series needs to know what it's trying to do. The first game introduces itself and may not be perfect, the second game in a series builds on the first game and fixes many of its mistakes, and the third game basically smooths out any remaining rough edges. With that in mind - if Yume Nikki's the first game and .flow and Yume 2kki(the two most famous Yume Nikki fangames) could each be the second game, then Someday is the third game in this series, and is personally my favorite Yume Nikki fangame.

lol my most notable nightmare consisted of me falling from an endlessly spinning rubik's cube colored like a chess board in a very dark place which made my heart race and that's the first nightmare that I've ever had that woke me up with a heavy heart... and a nightmare that also came because I played/watched a few horror stfu when I don't really have much experience on it and I'm also just starting to sleep on my own then I think I had some sort of sleep paralysis where some creepy dark dude slept beside me and I couldn't wake up or call anyone buts its just my stupid uncle... other things also happen but they don't make my heart as heavy so I don't consider them as nightmares... I once watched a game about how swimming without stop/rest effects the body and I dreamt about that ending in what I presume is drowning or just waking up but it didn't feel as impactful other than fulfilling my curiosities

Ohhhhhh I didn't know that glitch thing. I would like to make a video about Yume Nikki but I dunno where to start to be honest... ejem, nice video.

I like Yume 2kki better. I never noticed but Yume Nikki has this troll design where half the areas are long empty hallways or voids. Most of the effects are useless also but in 2 they made sure every effect does something. Lastly 2 has more of a sense of humor. Getting drunk, messing with stuff after the NPC's tell you not to, chainsawing them just to get them out of the way, it's hilarious. I honestly never saw the appeal of the fan speculation. To me the game just looks like a random mish-mash.

I agree, also, I think 2 is much more pleasing and has better music, and with its fair share of good animation and personality.
