Hey cat when I was little my dad used to play your music in his old pickup truck. He passed away when I was 17 and I played father and son at his service. You helped me get thru some of the worst times in my life. I'm 31 years old now and I'd be proud to have my son listen to you.

Dear Yusuf, I too am a fond admirer of yours -- from way back in the 1970s. I found great solace in your lyric: "...from the time I could talk, I was ordered to listen, now there's a Way, and I Know, that I Have To Go AWAY, I Know, I have to go GO..." [BTW I was brought up in a Greek family (in Brooklyn, NY) -- and while there was much wisdom passed on, there was also that conflict of REAL INTEREST to Rise UP beyond my mere physical and cultural identity. The Sojourn has been a CLIMB, which I am still pursuing. I wish you Love and Real Endurance during the rest of your Life's Real Pursuits.

.."In the blackness of the night I seem to wander endlessly With a hope burning out deep inside I'm a fugitive, community has driven me out For this bad, bad world I'm beginning to doubt I'm alone and there is no one by my side In the blackness of the night I see a shadow passing by From the heels of an old soldier boy There's no compromising and his eyes are black as the sky For this bad, bad world he is going to die He's alone and there is no one by his side In the blackness of the night I see the sparkle of a star From the sweet silver tear of a child And she's clutching at a photograph of long, long ago When her parents were happy, she was too young to know She's alone and there is no one by her side In the blackness of the night I seem to wander endlessly With a hope burning out deep inside I'm a fugitive, community has driven me out For this bad, bad world I'm beginning to doubt I'm alone, and there is no one by my side"..

Yusuf singing "Blackness Of The Night" is a song that only pretty late came into my view and hearing. I think this early song of Yusuf (then called Cat Stevens) is one of his best. He, at that time, was not sure about himself and his music. He had had a number of hits before, but wanted to sing a "meaningful" song at the same time. So Cat Stevens wrote this little, but very good song: "Blackness Of The Night". This video gives a good illustration of this song. -- Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.) PS: Yusuf likes to sing this song live very much, and I am sure he knows why.
