I know Yusuf Islam as Cat Stevens, a man who created a body of work still admired the world over, a great songwriter amongst a pantheon of songwriters that emerged in the late sixties and seventies, Diamond, Dylan, Mitchell, Young, etc... he has been away too long, great to hear these songs sang in these modern times, they have a new poignancy given these somewhat uncertain and worrying times.

Some of his songs seem to have a common theme of children and the transition to adulthood. This one....Oh very Young...father and Son. They all make me sad. I'm 61 and I am still transitioning. I'm just faking my adulthood and it's very hard sometimes. All songs mentioned I find to be heartfelt and beautiful. Cat is obviously a very introspective guy. He seems to carry the burdens of being human with him and writes about his feelings so beautifully.

His songs have touched me in a way I cannot explain. His voice and the emotion he puts into his songs are unlike anything that I have heard. I cannot wait to get to the climax of one of his songs every single time I hear it- even if it's just a second of him belting out with full emotion. I wish music today had at least an essence of the emotion, power and meaning of that. He is an inspiration to me!

From Wikipedia: Immediately following the September 11 attacks on the United States, he said: I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States yesterday. While it is still not clear who carried out the attack, it must be stated that no right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action. The Qur'an equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity. We pray for the families of all those who lost their lives in this unthinkable act of violence as well as all those injured; I hope to reflect the feelings of all Muslims and people around the world whose sympathies go out to the victims of this sorrowful moment.

I don't care what he believes to be true, I'm only interested in his talent. And to all of you claiming Islam is violent maybe you should take a history lesson on Christianity, for 1000 years the Pope sent Crusaders to murder anyone who did not convert, Christianity history is written blood and destruction, how many cultures around the world have been decimated by the church? So don't throw stones.

How is that a self-proclaimed Muslim can violate the faith by singing and playing a guitar and performing in public? This former songwriter supported the assasination of an author. And the crime? Blasphemy...just words on a a page expressing thoughts about more words on other pages. Expressing a thought s a death sentence. Cat Stevens drowned in an ocean yeas ago and something other dragged itself out of that water and onto the beach, hypocrisy. He sings of children, but the children of Islam are segregated at a young age, premature sexism, their innocence denied as they are packaged and sealed into predetermined roles..
@PinchALoafSera9 жыл бұрын
+degree7 why does he say on his web site that he "was joking" when he made the comment and regrets it? Blasphemy may be a capital crime in the Bible, but ours is not a society governed by the Bible. That can't be said for Islamic nations and the Qu'ran. If a fatwa is called by a religious leader who is eligible to do so, carrying out the deed is not "vigilantism", it is a duty. Reminding the fervent that that is the case and that the religion calls for execution is in fact supporting the execution. I wonder if Rushdie got the joke like you do.

+Valkyrie Sardo It was a sarcastic joke he did when they asked him if he supported the author's persecution. It's like...imagine if someone asked you, "Would you kill someone if they littered the ground?" and you got offended and replied sarcastically "Suure, I'd smash them against the floor.". He confessed in an interview later that it was in bad taste.
@svarteboks9 жыл бұрын
Because it's hil-fucking-larious to joke about a fatwah being called on a person! It was all just a joke, a ruse, a canard, Stevens and the Ayatollah had such a giggle together about old Rushdie pooping his pants and needing to go into hiding! Is that what you apologist idiots are claiming? He joked about it instead of saying it was bullshit. So he's a coward then and not a cold blooded killer? He still sucks.
