This is an excellent video! And what a clean bike! My only critique would be that any time you’re using calipers you should try to use the fat part of the jaws rather than the thinner part at the tip, you’ll get better readings w/ more contact on the surface you’re measuring and less flex from a cheaper grade caliper the more choked up on the piece you’re measuring you are. Just a friendly tip! Thanks for putting in the work to make such a great video!

@@DanMX2112 Hey bud. I have a question in relation to my exhaust valve measurement. On one valve i got .30 clearance when it should be in 0.10-0.15 range. By measuring the current shim (unknown value atm) do i add or subtrack to it, or i just need to find out the shim size first??
@DanMX21124 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it may be shimmed incorrectly on the last job. Usually your measurement would be tighter as the valve recedes into the head, therefore being under the .10-.15. But given you measurement, you need to add a larger shim. So if your current is a .35 shim, you need a .50. Check your valve spring for taught, and make sure there is no other issues.

Yea I know Newby question but ... when putting back on the fly wheel after you got it all timed right, how do you tighten the nut that holds on the fly wheel ? I went ahead and put the case cover back on , can you just use a impact or do you need a wrench on it like you took it off ?
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
The flywheel cover needs to come off, and the flywheel has a flat on it for a wrench, then torque it using a torque wrench on the nut. Kinda tight but easily done.

@Daniel Tucker OK can do, well if I already have the timing set with the fly wheel on and the nut , since it has that little c shaped clip In it , will the timing still be on point when I take the cover back off and tighten it to the 47 ft pounds? So i have a question i know it probably is a stupid one but can the valve clearance only go down from lets say 0,25 - 0,20 or can they also go from 0,25 - 0,28? and if they can go up what would be the cause? the question manly focuses on if you should be in the middle of your tolerance or at the bigest tolerance like yours 0,25... Love the video helped me very much so far :)
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
As the valve wears, the clearances will get tighter, so from say 25 to 20. You don’t want to shim it with a smaller tolerance, example 25 to 20, that’s counter productive. If your valve clearance is middle spec, leave it. If it’s tight shim in to a looser tolerance allowing the valve to be in spec. The valves cannot possibly shorten, which would increase the tolerance, example 25 to 28. I’ve had a few people say that they found that, but I’m unaware of how that can be possible. I always tell them it’s due to a bad initial measurement as the valve can on recede in the head, therefore decreasing the shim tolerance. Hope this helps.

Hey, Awesome video man, super helpful but I do have a question. So I have a 2007 yz450f and I have to put in a new exhaust cam and timing chain. But I’m confused on one part of the video where you said make sure your pistons dead center. We’ll I have it dead center but the only thing is that my cams aren’t aligned exactly so im not sure if I should just try and align both of them or if I should just try and align the intake cam since im putting in a new exaust cam anyways also should I align them or the one before I can put in my timing chain?
@DanMX21122 жыл бұрын
Make sure piston is at top dead center. That can only be done with the flywheel cover on. Timing chain must be installed before hand, then time the cams by turning them till you show correct timing on all three timing marks, exhaust, intake, and flywheel. Don’t do anything until you have both cams. Hope this helps. Don’t forget, timing is only correct when tensioner is released also. Double and triple check everything! You got this! Download a manual online also to help.

I ended up taking the hole tensioner out my locking mechanism was faulty even when I took it out from the cam chain housing. I’ll just use it that way it won’t affect the functionality of the part itself . Though now I’m working with the shims, my two intake valves were way off (.007) would not even go through the valve clearance easily but all my exhaust valves were in spec (.004 and .005) I’m just going to go up two sizes on intake valves (if I’m allowed to) and get those .004’s to .005 and call it a day. @@DanMX2112 I got one other question about the math so I can see this in my head... The top left intake valve you measured . 17 and subtracted that from the . 25 where you wanna be. You get .08 then you subtract that from the actually measured shim size of 1.79 and = 1.71. Why do you subtract it? Wouldn't you need to add it to get a bigger shim?
@DanMX21122 жыл бұрын
@@TheChaz81 As your valves wear out, the spacing between the valve bucket, and the cam shrinks. The new shims must also shrink, or be smaller, to increase that gap after adjustment. Not sure what your measurements will be as the question is confusing, but understand that you will not install a larger shim, only smaller.

Bloody hate that already think the 450 be to big for me 😅 might swap it for a 250 or a 125 two stroke anyways again great vidoe love seeing ya young fella out and about as well that's cool 😎 never had this type off stuff growing up so it always good to see 💪😎.

Shouldn't you be added for example in the left exhaust the maths is 1.79 + 0.8 instead of 1.79 - 0.8? In order to make this valve shim and gap bigger because you had 0.8 loss Plz explain!
@josuedavid37864 жыл бұрын
Βασιλης Μουτος The purpose of the shim is to increase or decrease the height of the cam bucket, so you can adjust the space between the cam and the bucket. In the left exhaust valve he got a measurement of 0.17 clearance and the tolerances are from 0.20 to 0.25 gap, so we need more space. This means the existing shim (1.79) is too fat so he needs a thinner shim to decrease the bucket height, thus increasing the gap between the cam and the bucket. In this case a 1.71 shim. So 1.79-1.71=0.08 difference 0.08 +0.17= 0.25 space, which means we’re in tolerance.

@@khadee2789 btw the YZ 250 and the KX 250 are 2 strokes, no valves. So you don't need the clearances.

I'm so confused why are you going off the high end of the specs ??
@DanMX21122 жыл бұрын
Because then the valves can wear in and not be out of tolerance. Example: Spec Exhaust: .20 - .25 If I shim to .20, once my valve wears I’ll be .19 - .18, which is out of spec. If I shim to .25, valve will wear and be .24 - .23, still in spec. That help?

the only reason I watched this videos was to see how you tighten the cam chain tensioner properly when reinstalled and you didn't even show it
@DanMX21124 жыл бұрын
Jet Thomas I totally skipped that lol install it with the two 8mm bolts then, do just the opposite, turn it counter clockwise with your screw driver and it will snap tight. Pretty much exact opposite as uninstalling it. Don’t loosen it before you install it, bad bad!
@samuelyeet60064 жыл бұрын
@@DanMX2112 dont loosen it? This is the confusion, if it's the exact opposite then you would stick it in lose, bolt it in then tighten the chain right? Very confused, do I put it back in lose so chain is lose, or do I put it in tight so the chain is tight? Then install the 2 bolts
@DanMX21124 жыл бұрын
Samuel Romans install it loose and tighten bolts to torque, then let the tension off and it will tighten the chain, of that make sense. You don’t want to install it sprung, risking cross threading bolts and also, it will be spring to full travel if done before installed. So, install and let tension out on chain. Hope this helps

Is it illegal to show us how you got that chain back on the cams god dangit I’m struggling here
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
The tensioner removed, and the cam caps off. It should be timed before you put the cam caps back on. With the cams tilted slightly toward you, lift the chain and move it one tooth at a time while rotating the cam. It’s not bad once you get the cam in the correct position.
@Slystones6646 Жыл бұрын
@@DanMX2112 well I keep having problems with my crank moving when I’m messing with the timing chain and trying to set the cams. the bike was starting first 3 kicks when I bought it a couple months ago just leaking oil out of the exhaust and blowing smoke, was told it needed rings bc the oil ring was bad or busted idk, anyway put a new set of rings not me my buddy haha and put it back together thought everything would have been good kicked it over it started for .5 seconds then died, bc after that I had to open the throttle completely for it to kick over with compression, if the throttle wasn’t completely open you could sit there and kick and have no compression or fire. Well me being the uneducated man I am had it running one day revved it out for maybe 4 seconds powwwww black cloud of smoke and it died wasn’t even starting when I opened the throttle so I tore it down and it’s jumped time none of the marks was lining up so now I got my cams out and my chain tied up on my frame and honestly idek what to do about it haha
