I was there with my brother right in the middle, about 60 feet from the stage! We ditched our car an hour out and hitched the rest of the way, and spent 3 days there! Lost my brother a few years back so these memories are priceless, thanks for posting this!

Funny you should mention ditching your car. We were traveling in a 3 car caravan when my friend's car broke down. He just took the plates off and left it there. Sorry about your brother.

nick robinson Thanks, it took us 1/2 the night to find our car. We filled the radiator by "borrowing" water from a house's garden hose in a coke bottle! We had been living on black beauty's all weekend long! I drove all night long that night! I'll never forget waking up Saturday morning and seeing ALL THOSE PEOPLE. We were in a SEA of people...What a weekend!

8 years old and my Dad took me to my first concert, Watkins Glen. 42 years later I still remember it. Dad even let me take a few hits on the joint and we danced and danced.

This is a fantastic rendition of Eyes of the World. Jerry’s vocals sound so crisp and strong. Grateful Dead were on top of their game. Phil is dropping bombs...Fantastic!!

This is very sad but a young couple Mitch Weiser (age 16) and his girlfriend Bonita "Bonnie" (age 15) were hitchhiking to this venue from Narrowsburg and were never heard from again. I was 8 yrs old in 1973 living in Illinois and only learned this story a few days ago. My friend's daughter went missing 5 1/2 years ago and we still have no idea where she is. My hopes and prayers that soon we'll have an answer to what became of Bonnie, Mitch and Chandra. I would like to dedicate this beautiful song to them, wherever they are.

First time I ever heard this played live.I still think it's one of the best versions. Rain, mud, sex, drugs and rock and roll. Watkins Glenn was far bigger than Woodstock.

I was there and thought I would never be able to hear a version as good as this again. Thanks

We met an older gentleman at our motel in Saratoga while up there for some phish shows last summer. He was there with a younger relative and was telling us about this show. Sounded incredible. Most hilarious / awesome thing was he actually did shrooms for one of the phish shows. Bless him.

Man this is good, every single version of this song performed in 73 and 74 is face peeling. it was an amazing transitional period for the boys. Eyes were all performed with an amazing coda during these years, beginning around the 13:00 mark here. Thanks for the great share Zack, right on man.

Believe it or not, Watkins Glen summer jam was basically a more superior version of the Altamont concert (1969). A one-day multi band show at a racetrack. However, Summer Jam was peaceful, and the music so much better. And the Grateful Dead were able to play.

I was there....more to the left, though, and a bit further back. This great big hefty chick was eyeballing my friend all through the show. Eventually she just peeled her clothes off and danced for a while.. She got dressed later and blew a few joints with us. I eventually balled one of her girlfriends...the whole weekend was great.

ZavnorZ I remember when almost every weekend was like this after I moved to SF in 1969. What the hell happened to the world? I blame it on the damn yuppies. Thanks for the nice story with a happy ending!
@ZavnorZ9 жыл бұрын
+Raymond Marble We had our own version of the Pranksters from the ages of 13 until around 17 before we started drifting towards different things like college, moving away, the army....shit like that. While it lasted it was magical, a group of roughly 15-20 kids in a small town, breaking the grownups into a new way of looking at shit, pranking the fuck out of them, acid parties every weekend during the winter. In the summer thousands of kids, including hundreds of heads would descend on our tourist town and shit would really get freaky. Then the summer would end and the locals would carry on the attitude. We really were "counterculture," looking back on it. Pretty funny. What a great time to be a teenager it was from 1968 (I turned 13) onwards, while it lasted. we sure had a good time, and a great soundtrack to accompany it.
@swyman106 жыл бұрын
I'm the same age as you and yes we were lucky to grow up in the 60's, the music, the friends, the party's...the drugs...
