We were there this past December. Unlike every other Caribbean port, Puerto Rico offers good access and reasonable prices for things that you wish you brought, want, or need.

Loved the walk around OSJ! We’ve been many times. One note that most (I think Carnival is the exception) cruises that start in San Juan use the Pan American pier that is not in town. A taxi ride is needed but it’s not far.

We cruised to San Juan last year. I had forgotten a prescription at home and I was able to call my provider and have her send a script to the CVS there. It's to the left once you get off the port. Not only was I able to get my script, it was cheaper too!

THANKS ZACH - Great Video as always! We love Old San Juan and have traveled there for weekends after our first cruise there. There are a few questionable areas known well for drug transactions jut near el Morro so be advised. The walk on the outside of the Government buildings to el Morro is very safe and spectacular. The area around the Cathedral and stopping in Hotel El Convento just next door is amazing. It used to be a convent and has a beautiful courtyard with a lobby bar that serves food too - well worth the stop while in port or a planned stay when coming back for a few days.

Is it safe to travel to Puerto Rico to go on a cruise now? We have one booked next year but are very concerned because we keep hearing horror stories about walking around, taxi drivers not really being taxi drivers, don’t go out at night.

As a local I can tell you it’s is pretty safe. If you are in old San Juan the weirdest place is La Perla(where despacio song was filmed) which you can go during the day but not recommended during the night. Old San Juan right now i think it’s safest it’s been in decades. But also there are so much things to do outside of OSJ that if you wish to see rainforests , beaches great restaurants I recommend exploring the island. About taxi drivers they can be a$$holes but use Uber .

It is very safe as your stay downtown but the walk between forts on that outer road has a well known poverty area down under the main street where questionable transactions take place so just be aware of your surroundings. Old San Juan is very safe to walk.
