Okay. So I need to ask. You say you loved the characters. My question is “how?” I do not know if you realize this, ignore it, or simply don’t agree with it, but the biggest criticism that this film has been receiving thus far is its SEVERE lack of character development with its supporting cast & that it’s TOO derivative of IPs in the past. Much of the chunk of the film is just planet hopping from one planet to another to recruit people. But we don’t get extensive development for any of these characters. Tarak for instance. He is shown to be able to calm down a Hippogriff looking creature from Harry Potter (derivative), but he never uses this sort of skill set again for the rest of the movie so it begs the question “what was the point in recruiting him in the first place?” Another character they recruited, Nemesis. We’re not shown how they found Nemesis on her home planet, nor do we know how Kai even knows her in the first place. She kills the spider creature with her lightsaber looking blades (again, derivative), & then all of a sudden she’s recruited. Like why did she agree to join in the first place & why so quickly? Then we find the disgraced general Titus. He won’t join the party due to his pity & lack of will because he felt he was beyond redemption. Then Kora tells him “how about revenge?” & then what do you know, Titus is now on the team. Just like that. So quickly & without logical reasoning. Then we find the Bloodaxe siblings & after a short speech from Kora, Bloodaxe brother decides to join. Again, just like that & so quickly. & on top of that we don’t see any interactions between these recruits whatsoever. We don’t see Nemesis having a conversation with Tarak, we don’t see Titus having a conversation with Gunnar, we don’t see Bloodaxe having a conversation with anyone on the team other than Kora & Gunnar. That’s a huge a** problem. As an audience, we don’t see the camaraderie or the dynamic of the group at all. Making it incredibly difficult to care for any of them, if at all. This is the criticism that is being echoed by many other reviewers that have talked about this film, so it’s not just me saying this. So I say again, you said you loved the characters. Again, “how?” Also, many people are also echoing that it’s too derivative of films like “Seven Samurai,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “Star Wars,””A Bugs Life,” etc. to the point of being just straight up plagiarism. Again, it’s not just me saying this.
@brentarellano46 Жыл бұрын
You can't say seven samurai and magnificent seven and bugs life or any film like that. Seven samurai is the original the rest are copycats, you can't criticize rebel mom for copying all of the rip offs when so many more people have copied seven samurai. I'm also not keen on shitting on the movie when it was Netflix that decided to release the neutered version of Snyder's story. Also I've read the novelization which Zack has stated he made sure followed his r rated original script. And yes there's more to the characters and galaxy. Especially the motherworld. Kora. Sam and Aris
@billycjohnson08 Жыл бұрын
@@brentarellano46 Actually, yes you can criticize it for being derivative. Because it points to lack of originality. Just because one film does it from another film, does not, I repeat does NOT mean that you can do the same thing & not receive criticism for it because I say again, it borderlines to the point of plagiarism. Two wrongs don’t make it right. I’m pretty sure you’ve heard that statement before & right now you’re trying to justify not criticizing the film because “well, the other films did it.” Sorry buddy. It doesn’t work like that. It’s all fair game, so get over it. Also, it has already been shown thru multiple interviews from Zack Snyder himself that he & Netflix both AGREED to releasing a PG-13 rating & again thru multiple interviews that he was given complete creative control over his IP & has stated & quote “not being handcuffed” by Netflix. Regardless, it is NOT an excuse to release a sh**ty version of your film 1st just so you can release a “director’s cut” later on so you can recreate the same hype that happened with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If your R-rated director’s cut film is expected to be the superior film, then release that version FIRST & let it be the only version. & regardless of what rating it is, it is the directors job to make sure that the film has a cohesive story & character development for its characters. A PG-13 rating is again NOT an excuse for its severe lack of character development & plagiaristic/derivative plot. Again, this criticism is echoed by MULTIPLE reviews of the film. So it’s not just me. With its rotten tomato score of 23% with critics & it’s audience score dropping down to 61% as more reviews come in, it’s clearly a flawed film. That’s just the fact of the matter & the hardcore Snyder fanbase that may like the movie regardless of its obvious flaws is not going to change that fact.
@brentarellano46 Жыл бұрын
@@billycjohnson08 ok well lol you can criticize it for copying seven samurai, and apparently plagiarism cause yes so many movies these days are so original. And yes Zack Snyder agreed to release the pg13 version because he's dealt with studios always neutering his films before because as he states, it's not responsible to have this kind of budget and rely on an r rated film. Yes I will though completely agree it is quite fucking stupid for Netflix to at all to request a pg13 version or even have that as an option when the r rated cut from what I read in the novelization is so much better. It truly doesn't make sense. Its fucking retarted cause all they accomplished is having critics like you rip apart the movie and ruining the hype for their supposed "own star wars" franchise. But at the end of the day I don't care, I liked the film, and I look forward to the directors cut as well as the 2nd film. Every other franchise I grew up with has been beyond ruined. So yes I will defend rebel moon. I know it's not perfect , even the novelization wasn't a LOTR or star wars OT masterpiece . But it does fix all the criticisms of the film as it exists currently. But again it's still leagues better than every other nerdy franchise. So I believe in Snyder. So respectfully I agree to disagree

He will listen to all the criticism of fans, critics and will try to fix it in the name of director's cut. Rebel moon from every angle looks and feels like rip off version of seven semurai, Warhammer and dune. It is one of the ugliest looking movie. A decent director doesn't need 3+hour and r rating to make a good movie. Snyder ain't competent, he knows his movies are trash. So he likes to trick some audience in name of director's cut. Just look at his jl movie, it clearly feels like a movie made by listening to all the criticsm. There’s sort of a win and lose with the Aris thing. On one end, you’re 100% right. From the story-telling perspective, it makes absolutely zero sense to spend so much time on him and have him amount to nothing. It’s a bad decision, and could have easily been fixed with a quick scene of him offering to look after the village while Kora was gone. But you also run the risk of another important question, and that’s why he’d care. His issue was with the way his squad behaved, so there’s little reason that he as a character should feel so indebted to a village he was stationed at. The lesser end of this though goes specifically to your question about assuming. Depending on certain factors, there’s nothing wrong with leaving some things in the air. I think the idea of us as an audience coming to the conclusion he remained with the village is a natural one. It could be wrong, but it makes the most sense, given what happened. I don’t think every answer needs to be or should be spoon fed, some things should be figured by context. Now, regardless of that point above, Aris isn’t the best example, as you said, he’s being shown to be a pivotal character with a pivotal role. So leaving his whereabouts up in the air is an issue! And one that’s going to bode very poorly should he just not be present when the characters actually reunite with the villagers at the beginning of part 2.

I'm really surprised to hear you compliment the character work and especially the camera work of this movie. Snyder HAS to stop being his own DP. He had such a wonderfully realized visual style and has completely abandoned it out of sheer ambition. Or worse yet, incompetence. Like, why not bring in someone who can shoot your movie effectively, man? It started in Army of the Dead and granted, Rebel Moon is shot a bit better, but that's only cause AotD was so brutally realized through his cinematography. The shallow depth of field, the blurry takes, the awful use of ridiculous lenses, the very poor framing. I'm a Snyder fan and the one thing I expect above all else going in is that visual style he brings. And man, his work at Netflix has really robbed him of that.
@animatedstorytelling1996 Жыл бұрын
The character stuff was more that they’re at the right stage of an Intro Film. Kora and Gunnar got the most work, as they’re our too main characters, and the rest got their basic intros that made them likable enough to want to see more. (Minus Titus; nothing against him, I just kind of forgot he was there). It was exactly what I expected in terms of character at this stage, though I agree a little more would have been nice. This wasn’t Snyder’s best camera work, but I still thought he did a pretty good job, especially when it came to capturing that sort of campy 80s Sci-Fi feel, but I also figured it was intentional. I do wonder if some of the lack of better visuals comes from a Netflix budget. Not sure what type of money this or Army of the Dead got compared to when he was making films for theatrical release, but that could play a hand. Hard to say for sure though without looking at numbers.

And the framing is pretty objective to me. There are some really good shots in the movie, but there's also some really bad framing going on, both casual and fight scenes. He's one of those rare breed of movie director who works best WITH a tight leash around him. Give him a story, a writer, a good script, and a controlled budget, and he might make a movie that's at least pretty good. Give Zack Snyder total carte blanche on whatever he wants to do, however, and you get Rebel Moon.

I’ve felt that way about him for a long time now. Despite being in the small minority of people that actually liked Rebel Moon, my opinion on that hasn’t changed. He just doesn’t have the ability to edit himself. And when he does, I feel he cuts out the wrong stuff. Even thinking back to his Justice League, it wasn’t a masterpiece, but the few scenes that actually helped fix a good deal of bad in the original could have been there from the get go.

Uncanny. Much like the "movie" being discussed, I can't tell if this "review" is supposed to be serious or just trolling. Hey Zack, is that you masquerading as a KZbinr ? Is that why we don't see your face ?

I wish I had Hollywood Director money. Funny enough, the robot is due to a career in education. I don’t think they’d care too much since it’s just movie/tv/video game content, but I keep my face hidden so none of my employers/students could trace this back to me.

Fair review. I’m a big Snyder fan. Thanks for not referring to fans as a cult. Many Snyder fans were also disappointed like me.
@animatedstorytelling1996 Жыл бұрын
There’s a fairly big distinction between “the cult” and Snyder fans. Being online as long as I have, probably more than I should be, has helped me realize the “cult” is too small a group of people to stick on his entire fanbase. Just wish that sect was a little quieter.

@@animatedstorytelling1996 i hear ya. I think that all started with marvel comic fans threatened by a dc comic universe that they lambasted anything they did. ( I could care less about comic books. I don’t care for 90 percent them) Such a dumb dorky rivalry . I cringed for years going out for dinner if the subject came up about movies because if I revealed I liked man of steel or whatever else it was almost unbearable. I got told to take off a ZSJL tee on 2 separate occasions and root for GOOD movies . These are ADULTs telling me this and I’m almost 50 and I bought it to primarily donate to a charity. Then after Black Adam released I followed the news and realized it’s ALL of comic fandom acting like a bunch of babies.

Zack Snyder "hater"...you mean a grown up?

“Grown Up Watches Rebel Moon” doesn’t exactly please the all powerful KZbin algorithm. We’re rarely on the same side, so when the stars actually align and KZbin likes me, I try not to mess with it too hard. Until next video when they hate me again and push I buy a subscription to an SEO page

The soldier boy, the Girl and that robot should have being our main party, alongside with Kora. Wasted potential there.

I really don’t get why Jimmy and Aris weren’t part of the main group from the beginning. Seems they’ll have a role to play in Part 2, but I agree, massive oversight to leave them behind

I don’t think I can think of single redeeming quality in this flick. Absolutely terrible on all fronts.

So I've made myself watch this 3 times and I have to say with each watch I am liking it more and more. Now I'm invested in the damned outcome lol. But isn't that what movies are supposed to be about the outcome. Sure he could have given us more character development. But he didn't. Get over it. Let's see in part 2 if he fills in the blanks better.
@animatedstorytelling1996 Жыл бұрын
I think outcome is what makes or breaks a story a lot of the times. Tons of great stories have been destroyed by poorly put together endings. But a lot of those little details in middle portion is what determines whether a movie, or any piece of fiction, is good, great, or amazing.

I hate when people cry lightsaber ripoff . The lightsaber is not even a visionary weapon. It's just the next obvious thing you would make in the space age. I never heard anyone say Stargate ripped off cattleprods from farmers
@animatedstorytelling1996 Жыл бұрын
A lot of people have gone the laser sword route, that’s true. I think people use the word rip-off too freely. But at the same time, lightsabers are “the laser sword.” Any sort of laser weapon is bound to be compared to them. In the same way guys like Homelander and Omni-Man will always be derived into “Evil Superman clones”
