With regards to the drop in fps, it's usually due to the terrain scarring that occurs as the game goes on, and the game engine is optimised to handle a certain number of models (hence the double meaning in the word "company"), so massive armies like in 9:46 would definitely murder your framerate. Still, great video, and yeah, still playing it even now, especially with a bit of tinkering (can't really say modding cos it isn't) with the game files so that German units speak German, something you can't do in COH2.
@Zade_955 жыл бұрын

@Perdikofas5 жыл бұрын
If you get the choice between the first and second game, choose the first one. CoH 2 is in all matter (except graphics, but that's not what you're really looking for if you want a good RTS) a downgrade from the first game. The tech tree from the first game was changed to a "doctrine" system, with doctrines that you can buy (or grind), with each one giving you specific abilities/units at specific levels. You only get 2 factions unless you are willing to spend 13€ for each individual faction. The game is littered with microtransactions, ranging from benign camouflages that don't affect gameplay, to "bulletins" (basically upgrades to specific units) and doctrines/commanders, some of which are essential for competitive games or flat out better than others. Other than tha gameplay is mostly unchanged from the first one, with the notable exception of snow maps that have a blizzard mechanic, though that's rather minor and only serves to slow gameplay down. The whole experience feels more like a grindy free-to-play game rather than a decently priced game.
@Zade_955 жыл бұрын
Microtransactions results 🤮 Sounds interesting at least in how it's different - I do like how they finally added Russia, although I would've loved to have seen more that just that (Japan, anyone?). Will definitely be trying it out soon!

I would like to expand the range of opinions you've heard about CoH II: it's my favorite strategy game of all time. While it sacrifices some the asymmetry present in the first game, it does so in the interest of making a far more balanced competitive experience. The asymmetry is still there, and very significant, but the factions are over-all more similar than in the first game. The true sight system is the single biggest improvement over the first game, besides the tighter competitive balance, and it adds a great deal of depth. Vaulting is certainly nice, but not nearly as much of a game changer. Where the first game really shines is in it's single player campaign and presentation. While the sequel is miles ahead in terms of graphical fidelity, the first game really nailed sound design with phenomenal voice acting and writing for every faction. The sound track is unforgettable, moving between tense and epic. The original commander system was also better than the one in CoH II, which is unfortunately oriented towards micro transactions. Modding is also vastly better in CoH I. Both games are strong contenders for my favorite strategy game, but CoH II wins out mostly due to my greater interest in multiplayer competitive compared to campaign. If I just wanted to chill out with a couple of friends, I think CoH I might be the better experience. It's far less punishing and stressful than the sequel, with lethality being a lot lower. It's a game that lends itself to just enjoying the atmosphere. But normally I'm looking for a tightly balanced and tense 1v1 brawl, which is where the sequel really shines.

It really isn't rock paper scissors. Yes small arms fire won't damage most tanks or buildings, but it is much more dependent on tactics. An anti-tank gun is a hard counter for armour, but tanks can outmaneuver and destroy the guns. MGs are a hard counter to infantry, but infantry can flank and destroy mg positions. In true 'rock paper scissors' this would not be possible where the hard counters would win regardless of how the units are used which is the case in most other RTS games.

I still play this game to this day with my younger brother and my nephew. And though it is dated, the mechanics to this day still hold up amazingly. The AI to this day still proves challenging to beat on Skirmish, combined with the rock-paper-scissors concept you covered, the AI knows how to flank, find loopholes on your defenses, and even retaliate if you are far behind their lines by outflanking you. And yes, EVERY UNIT COUNTS, even the basic Rifleman Squad can put an Iron Cross Unit on pinned while you get a Sherman Crocodile to them down. My brother, my nephew, and I have yet to beat 3 Experts on a 3v3 skirmish. And the Campaign is gripping! You get to feel the grit and complication while you are busy laying the groundwork to victory for each campaign. Red Ball express is a pain in the ass, but Carentan and Cherbourg was amazing. The German Campaigns was a welcome addition too! So should you play it? Heck yes. I'm playing it with friends every weekend, and the multiplayer base is very much alive to this day. Coh1 was great for its time. But to say you should just stick to Coh1 is just incorrect. I was playing coh1 from 2007-14 (old pc that wouldn't run coh2). Whilst the game was great balance was a serious issue through out and was never quite fixed. The community could wait a year for a patch. That patch could then introduce an OP unit like the Kangaroo at its inception. Cue waiting ages for that to be patched. If you looked at the release version of Coh1 and compared it to the final version of the game the differences would be astounding. A similiar story has occured with Coh2, the release version is drastically different from the version we play today. True sight is such a huge mechanic. Various cheese tactics were removed by this. Eg; In coh1 the LOS was circle that was not obstructed by objects like houses. So you could park a jeep (a scout unit with massive LOS) behind a house and still spot but nothing could shoot the jeep through the house. In coh1 and 2 units like MG's, Mortars and AT guns can shoot further than their LOS. So a unit you could't hurt allowed the enemy to shoot you the second you approached an enemy position. Truesight also allows for ambushes Eg Hiding SMG infantry behind a building or hedgerows, When the enemy advance they are hit from the flank. Also Coh1 had some pure BS like being able to pioneeer spam with wehr against brits (they tried but never fixed it, it was harder but possible) also Wehrs storm tropers with cloaking devices. LOS exploits. Arty call ins working in base sectors. I loved coh1 but its aged so much compared to Coh2. Go buy Coh2 its awesome.

I am playing for about 12 years. And I am really not getting enough of it. Just a masterpiece. The better you play the more you understand the military tactics. There's nothing like it. And there will not be. The developers team spitted.

The problem I found with this game is the learning curve. It's the kind of game I got tired of, but then want to get back to every now and then. Relearning is not like riding a bike, certainly. The gameplay is diverse enough that little parts of the game are only remembered upon experiencing them again, such as the RNG and the tiny little unit interactions that can make or break an entire match. Matches themselves can last up to an hour or longer sometimes (or maybe me and my team mates are all just noobs).

One thing that always bothered me a little about this one is the extremely limited amount of factions you get to play, even with the expansions. Whenever I play a historical strategy game (and I DO prefer historical ones over fictional ones), one thing I always look forward to is seeing all the different sides of a conflict, and COH just didn't deliver on that front at all, even with the expansions. Still a great game though, but it's certainly something that has always annoyed me.

CoH1: amazing single player experience, graphics and multiplayer still fairly active. CoH2: Excellent multiplayer experience, game was just patched last month, very active in all game modes. I have more than 6k hours combined on both games and if you want to join a great RTS community that is active, then CoH is for you. You can download the demo for CoH1 on steam, if the missions on the demo don't sell you the game then nothing will. PS. your graphics problems are caused by setting shaders to maximum, makes the game run using DX10.1 shaders that are very unoptimized, just put shaders on the second highest option and the game will run fine.

I have never been the biggest rts fan, but love historical strategy games like hoi4 or a couple of other games. CoH1 is probably my favorite rts ever, I bought it on a whim while on sale waiting for a update for a different game to drop, and played through the whole game and all dlc in a few days. Honestly CoH was more fun than that update ever was. Definitely worth it even from the perspective of a person who doesn't care about rts that much. I would give it a solid 9.5 out of 10, just because CoH2 had some qol features. Otherwise this would be 10/10

It's probably very subjective, but the OST you have chosen to highlight is on the lower end. 'A Storm's Brewing' or the 'Main Theme' would be way better - in my opinion. As for negatives, CoH is kind of arcadey and barebones in vanilla. Unit pathing and responsiveness could see improvements as well. All the pros are spot on.

If you set shader quality from ultra to high, the performance issues should be fixed. This game had a buggy implementation of directX10, which ruins performance (going from 200 average to 60 average is not abnormal on modern system).

This is one of the best games ever made. If you add BK mode - it becomes unbelievably good. Unfortunately COH 2 is way to arcade and just doesnt live to the name. Its made to be a pay to play with those generals. 1 more fun bonus. COH 1 actually looks much better then 2 - overall it has a better graphics considering the age.

The only thing that made COH 2 memorable in my opinion is the MOD. Spearhead and Wikinger really brought back those "feeling" of being just a commander leading the troop. Not the overpowered warlord with super troop waiting to be unleash that vanilla COH2 depicted.

After falling in love with COH1 back in 2008, and playing it for a long time. I was really excited for COH2's release. But the commander monetization, and the continuous dlc drops put me off. Also, constantly seeing ads every time I load up the game just left a bitter taste. Do note, the dlc is closely tied to games overall experience. Going back to the original, downloading Blitzkrieg mod, and Euro at war mod, made me fall in love with the game all over again. I don't see why I would switch over to COH2. I understand the multiplayer has a strong active community. But if I'm really interested in MP, I would go back to Starcraft 2, which has a better multiplayer experience.

@@ahmedkfji4695 I'd say i disn't have that much of an issue, i just got the base game for free, i bought the platinium edition later with all armies and campaigns later, i didn't have that much of an isue with that, all of this costed me around 6E. And for the commander issue, i can understand why you feel like that, but personnaly i have enough to mess around with, and for the DLC armies, they are way more interesting than the 2 base armies,so clearly it's an issue. A friend who was one of the highest ranked player in Europe a few years ago told me that he had most dlc for free then they were out (i think it was because of his rank in the game), so he didn't have a problem with that either (he was a big fan of the first game Btw), mabye that's why we don't get all the hate about COH2 :/ but appart from that i feel COH2 is just better in all aspects of the gameplay , more impactful , the voices are much better, and the HUD is like the best one i've seen in an RTS, but yeah, i admit if you want to really enjoy this game, the platinium edition is the best choice to start

Best WWII RTS? Sorry but have you not played Men of War: Assault Squad 2? The game's mechanical simulation of every single projectile and physical object makes it an extremely good RTS, for different reasons from COH. I highly recommend that you check it out on Steam, especially with RobZ's Realism mod that adds so much more in the way of realistic sounds and mechanics.
@Zade_955 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping to check it out sometime! No scheduled yet, but one day :)

Zade Cool! I look forward to your take on it! Important features to note: •each individual soldier exists with his own name and inventory space. •projectiles are completely simulated, with their own curved trajectories, penetration values, and even ricochet. (Penetrating both vehicles, and objects in the environment!) •features the ability to directly control any unit, and aim it’s weapons. So you got a heavy mg that can punch shots through a wall? Spray at it yourself and try to take out the men on the other side. Got a strong AT gun, and a weak enemy tank on the other side of a building? Punch that that sucker with an AP shot through the walls before it spots you. •The modding community is one of the best you can find for a game. The steam workshop itself features all sorts of community made campaign missions, mechanical changes, additional units, and new weapons. Outside of the workshop, you can find things that change the entire time period to WWI, modern day, or even frikin star wars. You just be forgiving for the base game’s C voice acting, and uninspired mission designs. These are greatly made up for by the excellent missions you can find from the modding community.
@theimperialowl10112 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree to some extent with your assessment of CoH as a rock-paper-scissors game. You're right that small arms cannot counter tanks, but most infantry can either equip AT grenades or bazookas, which usually won't destroy tanks alone but will do significant enough damage to disable the engine or force a tank to retreat. Similarly units like AT guns or HMGs can be countered by tanks and infantry respectively if caught out of position, so with proper tactics and use of combined arms everything can kind of soft counter everything else.
