I’ll keep training to resolve puppy biting, focus on training her to “work” for toys. We had an excellent “fetch” training session as well as a productive vet visit too!

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

My pup never bit. He tried the second I got him, I said no and gave him a toy. Never bit or nibbled again. 🤷‍♀️ Got very lucky because he wasn't a biter, a chewer, picked up potty training super fast. His last accident was when he was 3 months, hes 18 months now. Hes a super good boy. ❤

I was lucky as well. I've had 3 dogs. my first Maltese picked up training so fast and so easily. She knew the obedience stuff and a plethora of tricks. Left paw, right par, stamp your feet, stick out your tongue, wave, bow, Take it (she would take an object to someone), roll over, play dead. Potty training was tricky. She refused to go outside. She would only go on the pads, so we put pads outside hoping she would use them. She eventually did after about 3 weeks. She passed away in May. My second Maltese puppy and my Lab (4 years old) that we rescued from a family member cam to be about the same time. They both picked up on potty training really fast. 97% of the time my second Maltese will only lift his leg where one of the other dogs peed any other time he squats. After my first Maltese passed he had a hard time going in the yard. My lab was jumpy and it took time to correct that. I think that having my first dog trained so well helped with the other two. It seems like they learned so much from watching her.

I think it;s great that your dog is a little adorable pain in the ass and you are sharing your long road to a 'good dog' via your channel. I think too many trainers with channels end up falling into the trap if making it sounds easier than it is OR not doing that, but also not showing the long road ahead that you may have. Perhaps your puppy will be easier, perhaps not. That's life and the risk you take. In the end, of course, it is all worth it. You will never get unconditional love from anything other than a dog (pet) - even if you parents have some conditions, hard as they might be to surface (and no, don't try to find them lol).

I agree! I saw this all the time volunteering at the animal shelter. Too many people watch trainers on KZbin and think it's going to be quick and easy to train their dog. After a couple months (and who knows how much time people actually spent training per day) they bring the dog in because it's "untrainable (or not potty trained, a biter, too energetic, barks too much etc.)" and they think they got a bad dog, when, in reality, they just didn't know how much work training is. Or how long it takes to properly train a dog. It's sad. I'm so glad he's making these videos to show people that, even as a dog trainer, it takes lots of time and effort to train a dog. Zak is amazing!

My favorite part of this video was when Zac was working on “stand” with Inertia and she took a step forward. He didn’t scold her or say “no”, but just said “I should have released her before she broke her stand.” I so appreciated that because (I’m learning) that if a puppy gets something wrong it’s because their human isn’t communicating effectively. I can’t wait to start training my new puppy next month!

Oh my gosh. Puppy biting was the worst with my girl Luna! Listen, I did my research and I would put the tips like "exchange your hand for chew toys", "provide lots of chewable toys", "say ouch!", "a stern no", "cease the interaction" all in place and I regularly looked like I had lost a fight with some mountain lion. It was bad. Bruises, blood and wounds were apart of my day. What made it worse was when the vet said "She's got sharper than usual teeth" ....fabulous. BUT good news! I gradually physically felt her bite control improve and at 15 months my sharp-tooth Amstaff X Kelpie fur baby finally and completely got it. She's so gentle with her mouth. You can stick your hands in there and because she looks like a little tough nut people are always so amazed at how gentle she is. She nibbles so softly on your toes to the point it feels like somebody tickling you. Yes, she took a lot longer than normal to understand bite control but the persistence and hard work paid off! 😁🐕👏

@saramations
@saramations 4 жыл бұрын
she's not listening because hasn't been satisfied with any type of reward for when she stops biting. this is where it gets tricky because this part is up to the puppy and is just part of their personality; so you gotta go through the motions of trying to figure out what's a good reward for her. good luck

"Dealing with frustration..." For the puppy or the people? I'm happy to hear you say that fetch and puppy biting take weeks (love the thumbnail, "The biting has got to stop!"). I have a five-month old Pomeranian and could have used this three months ago. All the hard work-everyday, all day-is coalescing. Zeus is "fetch addicted." He has figured out that if he nips, the hands go away and petting stops. The most important thing he's learned is "go to bed." It was at the top of the training list because it's vital that he doesn't dash the door. We have beds all over the house. It's helped with a multitude of behaviors, including staying away from my shoes while I'm tying them. I think it's him not knowing where he's supposed to be in a room. Next up is teaching him to go to a dot. Every dog is different and always keeping in mind that communication is key (thank you, Zak!), we're being creative and learning what works best for Zeus.

I found the best way to get my same age collie puppy to bring back her ball reliably is to have a tug toy in my other hand and wiggle it so that she exchanges the 'fetch' for a few seconds of a more exciting game. It took one session for her to eagerly comply. I taught her to drop the ball into my hand this way too -- if she misses she'll go get it and try again, it's so cute! Great video, thanks as always for the invaluable advice. We're going through a major puppy biting phase right now.

Best way to get them to recall and bring bakc your toy unless of course your training the collie for hurdling (never teach them fetch ball stick in this case) is to use a narrow corridor so the only point of return is directly to you. Hope this helps.

@CarameliaM 4 жыл бұрын

He’s a proooo at not peeing or pooping in his crate though. He now is also just learning to not bite the carpet and instead bite his toys. Next step is to stop biting us then I’ll teach him to sit.

with chicken, boil a completely defrost and unfrozen chicken breast and then once it’s down boiling for about 15-20 mins, you take it out let it cool and shred it/pull it apart with two forks. Doing this kind of training yourself really makes you realize how patient he is. Committing to strictly positive reinforcement takes more patience and calmness than most people realize. Fast forward a year and I'm dealing with my own case of puppy biting and chewing. Nice to be able to look back and see this. Also nice to see that Inertia was even worse of my 11 week old puppy is right now. And nice to see that I'm no the right track but it'll just take some time. Won't stop overnight (drat!).

Hi Zak! I know you probably won’t read this but I love your videos. When I’m sad or feeling anxiety I watch them. I’m hoping we will get another dog, but im currently using your tip to get eye contact with my older dog (5), and it’s working well! I really love your videos and I just ordered your books. Thank you for making these videos :)

Your videos is such a relief! I've got my puppy like 3 weeks ago and he's much better with biting now and everything! But my biggest issue is a potty training. 3 days he's perfect, and one day it's a complete mess 😅 but mostly because of the my mistakes. But we're improving together!

I've got to say, I get discouraged and bummed out with the whole process of training my puppy - and this is my first dog; and he's a border collie! - but watching your videos are super refreshing and encouraging, and they motivate me to keep working hard with my dog. Awesome work, Zak. I'd love it if you did a video discussing training dogs exclusively in high-population-density areas. My area has very few parks, and the few there are are quite crowded. It's hard to find good quiet isolated places with minimal distractions. I'm talking super busy, right in the middle of a busy city area. If we want to go somewhere quite, we need to take a long drive out.

BTW - I bought your ‘Guide to a Well-Behaved Dog. It’s great except during COVID-19 ‘socializing’ hasn’t been possible. We are just, this Sunday, taking our 4 month Morkie to an age appropriate ‘puppy social’. 🤞🏽

It's been 16 years since I've had a puppy. I am considering getting a puppy who will become service dog. These videos are a great refresher and reminder of the commitment required to raise a puppy. They are also fun to watch. Inertia is so cute. I wonder if nike is a sponsor lol.

Don't forget that biting is an extremely important stage for the dog to learn and develop bite strength. Also consider the different toys and teach the dog accordingly. Plush toys are for gentle play and not to be destroyed. Tug-O-War and chew toys are self-explanatory. Dogs that jump and bite for attention, have to be positively reinforced by acknowledging when they don't act out, but it is much more difficult when they are in the biting and puppy play stage. It can be done with constant training! I love how you point out the split second rewards! That is a KEY MOVE to train "fast" and early. If you wait for seconds at a time to try and train them, you might wait forever.
