Re: what the tabla is made of - yes, the head is made of goat skin. At the beginning of a performance/song, you will see the player tune the tabla by moving the eight wooden blocks you see around the outside edge of the smaller tabla. If you move the block higher, the rope will pull the skin tghter, making the pitch of the tabla higher. The lower the block is, the more lax the rope is, pulling less on the skin and giving it a lower pitch. This is only for the smaller drum - called the dayan ("dayan" just means "right". The larger drum is called "bayan", which means left. The "n" is silent in both words). The dayan tabla should be tuned to the "sa" (the root note, or "do" in English solfege) of the key the performance will be in. The head of the drum has three textures. First you have the actual goat skin. This is called "maidan", and it is mostly where your hands will land. At the edge, you have another membrane layered over the top, covering the area where the ropes are connected to the skin. This is called "chanti", and it has a dryer, flatter kind of sound when you hit it. Finally, there is the black circle in the centre. This is called "syahi". Syahi is made out of iron filings, soot, and glue. This is what gives tabla the metallic, bouncy kind of sound, as it is literally made of iron.

Awesome explanation. Also worth adding that among Tabla makers, the special mixtures they use for the iron/soot/glue is a closely guarded secret, as is the methods of application. I've gotten to see a few being made, and they make it look so easy, but it takes them years and years of experience to be able to make an instrument that really sings.

It is called table have to tune in the scale of song or raga first and when he says " dha din din dha, dha din din da, na tin tin da, tha tha din da" known as 3 taal or beat. It is beat like 2/4 or 2/2.

The dark thing in the middle is called the 'gub,' and it's not just painted. It is pretty heavy, and it changes the sound. The sound is different based on where he puts his finger and where and how he hits different parts of the face.

Lucas I hope is on your radar, he is extraordinarily high caliber.
