I would recommend a butane powered soldering iron, they usually have an attachment for blowing heat only. Usually used to heat shrink wrap around wires. It’s like a heat gun but concentrated on a small area, so it’d be more precise and have less chance for the plastic to get foggy since it’s not an open flame like a lighter.

This looks great. I've seen modelers do this to make windshields and canopies too. I just started making silicone molds, and casting pieces and parts in resin. I have hot glue effects on my MG Providence from years ago that I'm going to replace, and I can make my own action bases now.

If you want to avoid the white discoloured plastic, you could try boiling it for a few minutes in water I imagine that would probably work

Thats the type of project the more tools you have the better it comes out. Lighters work, so do heatguns/blow dryers or soldering irons. For the pegs not fitting, you can make it work. Cut the tabs wayyyyy longer than they need to be, heat up the tabs and fold them until they fit. Make sure to pinch when they are still a little plyable. Also you can be tricky and just add peices heat them up and stick on the tabs if you want the thickness to be even on both sides

If you get a silicone cooking mat you can paint on clear epoxy or hot glue and form it into all sorts of shapes. It doesn't stick and you can just peal if off when you are done. The epoxy can be affixed with more epoxy and the hot glue can be attached by just warming the attachment point a bit. I've done those techniques before. Never this one.

I am really new to this hobby. Could you to me what you mean by "paint on clear epoxy or hot glue"? Do you mean literally putting some clear epoxy or hot glue straight onto the silicone cooking mat, and then forming and painting it as needed? Does the clear epoxy need to be heated up? I really am a super noob to all this so sorry if these are some seriously bone-headed questions lol
@exturkconner2 жыл бұрын
@@King_WhiteWolf You put the epoxy or hot glue down. You can shape it with tools. Toothpicks, popsicle sticks, In the case of the hot glue you can even use proper sculpting tools if you want as it'll just rub off. Epoxy you'd not want to use sculpting tools on as then you'd have epoxy hardened on the tools and would change how they function. Then you let it cool (for the hot glue) or cure (for the epoxy}. It won't stick to the silicone and will come away clean. You can also then paint the clear parts you've created with clear paints to get all sorts of effects.

I don´t know, maybe if you add more layers just like the petals of a rose (intertwined petals) or use a colored transparent plastic because with the paint it covers the figure too.

hmm not sure if this would have helped me with making thruster effects. luckily i managed to make some using hot glue. it was pretty jank but for a first time it turned out well. each effect had two parts joined together

If you have to use a lighter, hold the part beside the top section of the flame, not over the flame. Avoids charring that way, as heat travels up and is harder to control over the top

can this be done to make something such as cloaks, or is a lighter too hot for that?
@TsorovanZero3 жыл бұрын
Custom cloaks can be made using similar methods. Boiling water or a heat gun would be more consistent and stable than trying to get a lighter to work though. Not to mention safer.
