Those first two goals were tough shots too. The first shot he was screened and most goalies would have struggled with it. The second shot was not his fault and only the best would have stopped it. The defense let the rebound go straight to the Leafs and he had no chance to stop it. People also forget to mention Ayers set up a GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He played the puck, threw it around the net, and it led to a break and goal!

@Raniere You have to keep in mind too, this wasn't Foster's first time as Em backup goalie, but Ayre's hasn't played in goal in a very very long time(04 I believe) and all things considering, yeah the Leafs shit the bed, but Ayre's did stop 8 for 10. Credit for that ya know, I'd love to see any of these keyboard warriors online(not any of y'all, more the one's on twitter) get in net as a NHL goalie and stop 8 for 10. Also very important to note that he registered a shot on net. It happened 4 mins into the third. At that point, the Leafs did not yet record a shot on net in the period. So an emergency goalie recorded a shot faster than the entire Leafs offense did in the 3rd period. The Leafs really need to get their shit together since their whole team is built on being an offensive juggernaut. Can't win a game when you barely have any shots on net, especially when it's against an emergency goalie.

Do you know where I can find a clip of that

@billt85044 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the first goal he let in, but that second one was probably not going to be stopped by 95% of the NHL goalies out there. That was just good passing by the Leafs. Also, not sure who the Leafs coach is but at the second intermission I would have told my guys "shoot the puck on at the net every chance you get. I want that guy facing 50 shots in the 3rd." Not sure what coach said but that didn't happen.

@Christoph57824 жыл бұрын
howard baxter I want to say the opposite. The first one is a well placed shot with traffic in front. Every goalie in the league has let that kind of goal in at some point this season. The second one, it almost looked like he didn't know what to do with his glove or have the mobility to get to the puck, I'd say most goalies in the league would at least get a piece of the puck. That being said, it was still a hell of a performance by him and the Canes, and a complete joke of an effort from the Leafs
@Awesometrax4 жыл бұрын
The second goal wouldn't have been stopped by Carey Price never mind an emergency goalie. I didn't blame him on that goal but then he shut the door.
@1995Hausmeister4 жыл бұрын
@@Christoph5782 the second goal was really unfortunate. It bounced off a Defender right infront of him and landed right on the stick of the Toronto Player. Not a lot he can do imo.
@hagamapama3 жыл бұрын
No they weren't all that easy. An NHL goalie should have a chance at the first goal but I've seen those kinds of shots find a hole enough times to know that it's not THAT easy to stop them. And that's without figuring that that was the first shot Ayres ever faced against NFL level competition. The second shot was simply a good triangle goal. The whole point of that play was to neutralize the goaltender. The only goalie who I have seen routinely save shots like that is Tim Thomas in his very brief heyday.

I like watching the sport but don’t understand the finer details. Is goalie such a different skill set that reserved from other positions in your team couldn’t fill in? Is it super rare to have two goalies out at the same time, or was it a last minute injury? Just can’t imagine why they wouldn’t fly someone from their own area. Couldn’t there be a conflict of interest if the goalie is employed by the opposing team. Complicated!

David Ayres at the time was in fact affiliated with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL which is the Carolina Hurricanes farm team as of Feb 1st, 2020, 22 days before the legendary moment. So, this actually makes sense that he would play for Carolina. He never played a game for the Checkers nor the Marlies (which he was affiliated with on December 5th, 2015- Feb. 27th, 2016) and lost all his games in the beer leagues allowing almost nine goals a game on average.
@rushore12 жыл бұрын
He wasn't really affiliated with the Checkers. He functioned in the same capacity for the Marlies as he did for the Leafs as the EBUG. When the Checkers came to Toronto, he ended up having to suit up for them because the starter went down, but he never ended up playing in that game.
