This is part of the reason why it is illegal to move up in the exchange zone nowadays. Now the lineup for the exchange zone is set by who is leading at the 200m point of the previous leg. If you move up or attempt to move up then you are disqualified.
@thomasmckenzie45847 жыл бұрын
I didn't used to think that was the case. I would always try and sneak up if my incoming runner was passing people and were in lane 1. I can see why it is an automatic DQ though. The Russians should've been DQd and Clark from Oceania should've been too for the brutal shove. It was definitely done on purpose to knock the Americans out of the race.
@trickygoose27 жыл бұрын
Good point. This is 1985. I think it wasn't until sometime in the 1990s that a team could actually be DQ'd for moving out of position when waiting for the incoming runner.
@nigelloflaveo4 жыл бұрын
Does anyone know when the 200m ruling was established ? And was there a protocol firmly in place in 85 for that matter ? 4 x 400 relays are one of sport's real joys.
@binkyxz32 жыл бұрын
The rule is IAAF 70.20: In the Medley Relay, the athletes running the final leg and in the4 × 400m race, the athletes running the third and fourth legs shall,under the direction of a designated official, place themselves in their waiting position in the same order (inside to out) as the order of their respective team members as they enter the last bend. Once the incoming athletes have passed this point, the waiting athletes shall maintain their order, and shall not exchange positions at the beginning of the takeover zone. If an athlete does not follow this Rule, his team shall be disqualified. I don't know when this rule went into place. The incident here may have had bearing on it.

It's one thing to make a comeback in a 1600m or 800m run but to be down by 12m on an anchor leg at this level and win is just unreal. He should have been given an 8m lead and instead got the stick 12m down. Unreal run. Split had to be sub 44. In the overall the team time would have been reduced by 3 or 4 seconds.

I'm sure many countries protested this final but considering that this was the very last event of the meet doing a re-run was possible considering the rest time that was going to be needed, so that wasn't going to happen that's why I believe three countries should've been DQ'D... The USSR, Oceania, and sadly the Africa team because even though the American anchor leg unintentionally knocks the baton out of his hand, one you can't be swing your baton all wildly like that to your side outwards plus he crossed the finish line w/o his baton automatic DQ.
