I feel like Nintendo fumbled the bag by not committing to the transformation idea. Both Link's arm and Zelda's form but especially the latter could have been so much more impactful if they had stuck with it.

I agree, but I kind of understand that this might be a bit too complicated for younger people who might be a huge demographic for this game's audience. There are a lot of topics that can be easier and more accessible and understandable for young people if discussed in a group setting within a safe space like a school class or family instead of alone in a piece of media. I think it is a pity because the story has some potential that has not been realized but I am not really angry about this decision.

Don't ignore that they did a purposeful journey into the topic of restoration, because that's the story THIS game tells, and deserves to be told. The power of Recall is already a very heavy reformatting of biases like convenient time travel, that is pushed on Zelda from other stories like the MCU. Zelda puts past and present in a contrary order, where things aren't arbitrated by the past, but a personal past that happens in the future can be altered to become the new world timeline, if you have the foresight to correct your mistakes before they even happen. This is what it means to be "from the future" in Zelda, it is like dream or premonition, not the reality we ASSUME we already are set out for. The REALITY of Zelda games span from the NEW timeline from after we play the game and cause an effect. NOT from the historical truth that we're taught is "already the case" because we start the game in that timeline's bias. In Platonic sense the starting point of Zelda games is the illusion, not the historical reality of things. The starting point is LIVING OUT A HISTORY that DID NOT actually happen, and that is how the franchise deals with prophecy. And in fact it does deal, with prophecy, when many other series have you believe some magician just randomly knows the future. Even worse, people who don't even know, still are convinced there's nothing more left that can be done but an attitude change, and defeatism is "impactful".

dang, this video deserves more attention! bringing these concepts into zelda is something not often done, it's a fresh and interesting perspective. i also wanna say that the background music is very calming (thunderhead isles music is lovely) and this video was easy & nice to listen to.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! I like to look at the connections between games and audiences/players, so there is very likely coming more! Probably not exclusively Zelda, but I hope you stay tuned!

Great analysis! I think these themes of identity and examining oneself as part of a larger whole really resonate within the context of the Link/Zelda/Ganondorf reincarnation cycle. Wind Waker was my first TLOZ game and I loved the journey of that Link as he confronted the legacy of his past incarnations. The Hero's Shade from Twilight Princess is another great example of this.

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it! Yes there are many aspects in those games that are really interesting!

Did not expect to see Zizek in a Zelda video! Great stuff, though. The ending especially resonates with me; our inevitably being slaves. More could be said but I’ll leave it there.

I work at President Polk’s Home and my coworkers, and I have spent entirely way too much time, discussing how many bricks can be replaced in the original kitchen before it’s not original anymore.

Sounds like a really interesting working place to me, but I thrive in those kind of discussions ;)

I wish Link didn't get his arm back. But also I disagree with the people saying that Zelda should have remained a dragon. I definetely think she should have been changed by the experience, traumatized even (it's such a cop-out that she doesn't remember anything). I've also seen cool fan-art of her as a human with some dragon caracteristics (like the eyes and horns). I'm definetely not a fan of how everything was magically reset to the way it was before. It made the whole game feel pointless.

That is kind of the problem isn't it? Actions usually have some kind of consequences.

My heart skipped a beat when you brought up Jordan Peterson, I was SO relieved when you said you didn't like him right after

Haha, people apparently have a lot of opinions about him. I read a lot of his stuff since I have one friend who really likes him, and one who really doesn't. I ended up not really agreeing with many of his ideas, since I found it either drastically overdramatized or factually wrong/based on wrong assumptions. PhilosophyTube has a really good, quite neutral video on him.

I watched this entire video. I think it was a pretty good video. The guy the made this video did a good job making this video.

2:35 I dunno, being cursed into a Deku Scrub (even if for 3 days) is kinda worse than just losing an arm.

Except that 5 minutes after you transform a mysterious guy appears telling you that he can turn you back if you just do something for him.

@@dave_marian Only after having to be a deku for 3 days and then reversing backwards. Then he just assumes you got his mask, if he hadn't assumed before hand he'd probably leave you as a scrub.....maybe.

If the game took it seriously and kept her changed permanently, then the message would stand. But they undid the consequences making it completely unrelatable to real humans.
