The US wasn't involved and probably wouldn't have approved the operation if they would have known beforehand. Also Ukraine is being very efficient with the resources and manpower they have. In the south they are trading comparably small amounts of territory for huge losses in men and material on the Russian side, while taking a lot of Russian territory and PoWs in the south with minimal losses.
