"Tilting the wing will change the downforce it produces on each side and impart a roll moment reacted from the center of pressure of that side of the wing to the mount against the moment on the other side," said Jeff Braun, a championship-winning race engineer whose experience spans IndyCar, NASCAR, and IMSA. "This would try to roll the car and warp the car by causing a diagonal dynamic corner weight change." Translated to English, Braun said: "Understeer."
@c0c0asauce
@c0c0asauce 4 жыл бұрын
I read that article and he was guessing. No one said they tested it or that they knew how it worked. The same could be said for any device used to increase rear down force. It will always lift the front. Anyone with a track Miata knows you shouldn't use a rear wing or front splitter independently. I don't know if it works but neither did Jeff Braun as of that statement.

@@c0c0asauce Jeff has a point. A wing that is on an angle will not only impart a vertical force, but also a horizontal one depending on the direction the wing is tilted. That horizontal force is only being applied on one end of the car (the rear since no such wing is installed on the front) in turn forcing the rear of the car towards the inside of the turn around the cars Z-axis. This twisting motion around the Z axis will be in the oppsite direction of the twisting force being generated by the front wheels attempting to pull the nose of the car into the corner. In short Jeff is 100% right. The higher the speed, the higher the downforce and also LATERALforce applied to the rear of the car pulling the rear of the car into the turn thus causing more understeer the higher the aerodynamic forces.

@@jackassrower M Z If you don't have actual testing from a wind tunnel then you are still guessing. You are also assuming the rest of the car has no counter or effect of it's own. This car has different front splitter than their other cars. "The new design improves front to rear downforce distribution by generating front downforce and directing air to the underbody. The updated front bumper and front wheel outlets stabilize the air around the wheels." www.topspeed.com/cars/zenvo/2019-zenvo-tsr-s-ar179967.html Jeff, in the same article you are quoting, said that he doesn't know how the wing works and that they could have done testing to find the optimal angles. You are saying he's right but you have no numbers to back it up and Jeff who has professional experience said he was just guessing. I welcome actual tests but I don't need to have the horizontal forces explained again when we don't even know how effective the wing is.
@jackassrower
@jackassrower 4 жыл бұрын
@@c0c0asauce I'm not guessing nor just assuming. I'm an engineer and I understand static vs dynamic loading around an axis. Doesn't matter if the front bumper is different, unless it has active planes that twist the car around the Z axis to counter the forces generated by the rear wing the problem will persist because well.... physics.
@c0c0asauce
@c0c0asauce 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackassrower There's no way you can look at a car in a video and know how all the aero works and how well it works. If you have numbers then I'll submit. If you didn't measure it then you are guessing. To clarify what I mean when I say how. If the car typically oversteers and the wing counter acts that. Would you call that causing understeer or just reducing oversteer?

It's a giant wing, you're never gonna get more than the design allows, but if you can direct that same downforce, to a when that needs it, you feel more grip and a flatter corner.
@hellobooom
@hellobooom 4 жыл бұрын
@@Curry3659 except that you're now affecting the front opposite tire, causing understeer. The exact purpose of this wing is undone by diagonal forces, which is why ALL other active win designs work in a balanced manner. This seems like it's oneans desperate idea.

Is that giant moving wing really necessary? I feel like you could achieve the same effect by having ailerons and flaps on the wing itself instead of moving the entire wing which I think looks ridiculous Lol.. I dunno, maybe that'd be too complicated with too many moving parts but I just think that wing looks silly.

I wonder if any company or individual will build a car where all of the bodywork on the car moves just like that wing. That way the car can always have the perfect blend between aerodynamics, down force and breaking. I would love to build it but I don't think anyone would give me $30 million to design and produce a working example.
