Well done for posting these vids. I am running an MHD stage 1plus on my 2007 335i. I have an upgraded intercooler and charge pipe. I gave my intakes a clean and the crud in there was nasty to say the least. Perhaps an intercoller upgrade and a walnut blast of the intake ports could be next, then you can take the MHD from stage 1 to stage 1 plus. That should be good for 370ish hp on 98.
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have pretty much guessed it. The owner of the MHD car is doing intercooler, charge pipe and a trans service. Depending on how the trans feels after the service, he may also put XHP on. MHD is really hard to beat value for money wise, totally changes the cars character. Have you had yours for long? Also 10 points on finding the video before its officially live haha.

Great Video guys, always interesting to see a comparison of different tuning methods, Agree with John Herbert Walnut blasting does make a difference especially with high mileage cars due to carbon build up on these direct injection engines, Intake, XHP, Walnut blast and Intercooler upgrade 👌 Not sure if the charge pipe has been done, but those plastic ones crack or blow under higher than stock boost levels. Then it's the downpipes for stage 2, which will take the car to well over 400bhp.

0-100kph is not a good test for performance gain, it's usually just a traction test. You can have the much lower hp and slower car hooks better and get a better 0-100. Yall need to do 100-200 to take away the traction factor then you will know which one truly is faster
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
Completely agree if you are just testing power. But there is still matter of how the cars off the line. And there’s much more data out there on the 0-100 times, well it’s easier for most people to compare. I’m sure down the track the average petrol head will be familiar with 100-200 times of a lot of cars just off the top of their head. But even these 2 are pretty slow 100-200. Not many people have enough room to safely test it. Add another 200hp and you can get those 100-200 times in a much shorter distance.

You do realize this was completely invalid? xhp car vs. non xhp car when trying to compare MHD and JB4? No.
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
Yes we do agree, which is why we made the comment at the start of the video, regarding the cars being different. We did think about the differences and how they would impact times and whether it was "fair" before doing the video. The reality is there are very rarely two modified cars that are exactly the same. The JB4 car was running XHP. But the MHD car had much better tyres, you can launch the MHD car at 2000rpm and it hooks up. The JB4 car will spin the wheels badly if you launch at 2000rpm. Both cars would be running very similar boost at this rpm range. After accurately timing around 500 0-100kmh times on the street in nearly 100 different cars, the differences in these times is so close it's nearly irrelevant as a comparison of performance. The JB4 gives the users an advantage being able to run specific boost curves and hold what ever boost you want to redline. The MHD is the safer of the two keeping that and other adjustability out of the hands of people who don't understand what they are doing. But MHD is generally giving a better driving experience, not to mention much cheaper. We should have summarised better in the video, we are definitely still learning how to best do this type of filming. For someone that isn't mechanically minded MHD is the better option hands down, it's cheaper and just works every time. If you want to learn about tuning, and whats going on in a N54 when you start winding the boost up the JB4 is a great platform to learn yourself. The downside being more complex, if you don't learn, you can really ruin how a car feels when incorrectly adjusting settings in the JB4.

Both of these cars are faster starting in first. They both seem to have significant traction issues if you brake boost in 2nd. cool test but its really a jb4 vs flash only test. dme boost control vs isolated boost control.. mhd is just the flashing tool ( which is also used to flash the jb4 tune) no mention of what Backend flash the jb4 car has (im assuming BMS not wedge) and no mention of what stage 1 mhd (im assuming wedge though). The wedge backend flash wouldve been a more fair comparison as its the same tuner as the mhd car and theyre both paid tunes instead of free tune vs paid
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
All very good points 👌 To clarify they are both running OTS tunes as that is what most guys are using when they first start out modding. Wedge do write the OTS maps for MHD only users, this was tested with the OTS default map on MHD. The JB4 car is on the BMS Pump BEF, which is free but the JB4 is quite a bit more expensive than the MHD only option. Both cars were tested when they were both at a very early stage of modifications. We still think each setup is probably what most MHD users will do first and the same for JB4 users.

@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
That is a tough one. BMS maps just work, they are by far the most tried and tested. You do need to match the BEF to your fuel and i didn't think much of the BMS pump back end flash. The car was lazy. Race flash on the other hand was a different story. As for Wedge vs RFP, i would recommend speaking to them both and see what responses you get. Ken from wedge has been tuning N54 cars with JB4s since before wedge tuning was even a business. He has definitely spent a lot of time getting the most out of these motors. However he also very publicly doesn't like JB4s. RFP is relatively new, only been doing it for a few years, but i like how is open with his tutorials and wants to share the basics of tuning. I approached both and got a much more positive reply from RFP, so he got my money. Once i have the port injection up and running (still waiting on injectors) i will do a vid on his map and review how it performs compared to the BMS one and more importantly on what his support and willingness to fine tune was like.

So a car with cold air intake (adds 15-20hp) has xhp software that locks the torque converter earlier and shifts faster than stock on a stage 1 map is faster than a car that's completely stock and just has a stage one map. 🤣🤣 and you wonder why it's faster? The reason you are getting wheel spin with the car with xhp is because the torque converter locks up earlier thus no slippage and power loss through drivetrain. Not because of the tires. The non xhp lets the torque converter slip till higher up in the rev range before locking up. Essentially its like side stepping a clutch on a manual car or releasing it gradually. Also the quicker the gearbox shifts the quicker the acceleration. It's not rocket science. I am willing to bet if you do only xhp software on the MHD car with DCI it will be faster due to a better tune.
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
What do you think about the shifts displayed in this video on the XHP car vs the non XHP car?
@francoiscombrinck38844 жыл бұрын
@@ZeroTo60Tube The shifts on the xhp car is les smooth because it locks up the torque converter from 2nd gear under acceleration hence the snappier shifts. The stock gearbox software still allows for torque converter slippage hence a smoother shift and more comfortable drive downside is a slower shift and acceleration but easier to launch. If you get the highest xhp map it almost shifts as fast as the dct gearbox. Generally to take full advantage of a xhp tune is to fit a LSD. With full torque converter lockout under hard acceleration you run into traction issues as you have seen. Fitting a limited slip differential enables the car to put the power down to the ground. Simply fitting a lsd to a stock 335i will drop the 0-60 times into the 4 second range as it allows for harder launches without breaking traction.

When you time a car accurately with zero roll out and 2 people in the car (we do this as more of a real world test) they are often slower than people realise. A lot slower. My current N54 e92 car with 20psi, port injection and full e85 is yet to break 4.6 0-100kmh when tested this way. I have done a 3.9 with a OBD data logger tho... the obd timers are way off by the way.

Map 2 on almost stock car? Is that a safe map for no mods?
@ZeroTo60Tube4 жыл бұрын
Not recommended for hard use, like track days. But a few pulls for 5-10 seconds without letting the engine get too hot is fine. The JB4 was running on the pump back end flash, which is a relatively safe flash. If you are going to try it yourself, do some logs and throw them up on N54tech, they will pretty quickly tell you if its safe on your car.

Okay I was just curious because with my mods I only run map 1 or 5 JB4 Intercooler Charge pipe Muffler delete Intakes New plugs and coils. As of now.

@@eddieellison7679 Have you got a back end flash on it yet? Cars with the BEF do feel different to ones using the stock flash.

There's really not a lot in it. They really are so close that in a traffic light drag race it could either way.

Hmm. Xhp is a game changer. Don't like the comparo

Fair point. The MHD car has now gone quicker in our latest video with the new version 9 maps. I really think MHD works better with the autos than a JB4 does anyway.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I just went to ver9 myself, it is better. Xhp should shave a 10th or two off the 0-100 aswell

@@ZeroTo60Tube dci, upgraded ic, charge pipe, factory performance exhaust and stg 2 91 oct mhd. I have a set of down pipes I need to install. My car had the ppk on it so mhd wasn't a huge jump for me
